I was pretty sure I was a woman before now.

- Real women cannot build
- Real women cannot script

I have a successful business involving building avatars. I write all my scripts myself, and have started dabbling in C++.

- Real women are not furries or neko's

Haven't made a neko av yet, but most of mine are furries. I'm not into the "lifestyle" thing though.

- Real women cannot be tech savvy

I picked out the parts for my current computer. My dad put them together because I was a bit afraid to though, because I had never seen a motherboard installed.

- Real women WILL voice or cam verify

I'll voice verify if I feel like it, but I'll be annoyed by the request.

- Real women do not carry weapons

I AM a weapon! :D Sometimes I wander around with C:SI swords and such, not often though.

- Real women are not violent

Does cartoon violence count?

- Real women do not like Anime
- Real women do not use Anime emoticons

I have the whole first season of Sonic X with subtitles, and most of Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 subtitled on my external hard drive! ^_^

I've a serious bone to pick with someone here, and I don't care who knows it.

I've become addicted to ferret photos.

Argent, would you kindly find and post some that are a lot less cute?

Ah thankyew kindly.

^
What she said! I love the ferret photos... :D

I think I'm still following this thread because of the ferret pictures <3

It's funny, I just enabled avatar pics and signatures, and have been reading the confessions thread. I had imagined half the people on here in my mind as the opposite sex that they are anyway.

but that's the whole point - av pictures here don't have to be of the SL av of the poster (though I can see a very strong argument for that being the case... photobooth at the Forum Cartel Hangout, anyone?).

I do think it's illustrative of a certain negative mindset that rather than seeing SL as a near-ideal way for people who suffer from excessive gender polarity to get an easy look at the other side of the fence, instead we just get schoolyard whingeing about "the other guys".

Perhaps a sign of EGP (I'm gonna copyright that term!) is that it's always Everyone Else's Problem...

I don't see the problem with or with out knowing. Well I didn't have one.

I guess some sex is just more opposite than others.

To me, it didn't make any difference. I was just surprised.

What's the point of setting up a straight line like that, I ask you?

I don't think I have a pic in signature....that feature is very distracting to me, so I keep it off.

But Ian....in all fairness to Pep, in that thread.....his Alt is going after a Female.

I think your talking about the violence thread? I wasn't keeping up with that aspect, I was zoned on other areas.

Lol. Well there are a lot of threads with Pep on about something in them.

Anyway, it's just a comment on the way we don't really know what sex someone is on here.

Don't worry about it....just trying to help Pep maintain his reputation.

Just that: they are stereotypes, little or nothing to do with reality ;)

Sentences that start with "all X" are usually wrong ;) However some facts about an avatar tend to increase the possibility of them being guys in disguise. And usually, I am never wrong with my guess. Those facts are, in random order:

- uses linux (I am still to meet ONE SINGLE woman who uses linux)
- they talk lots and LOTS about PC games when asked (very useful trap *lol*)
- intimate knowledge of PC hardware, prices, setup, technical issues, knows their video card model without looking it up etc. There aren't many women interested in that kind of stuff.
- scripter (I don't know any female, good scripters out there. However I tend to disagree about building/other graphics design. Many females do that.)

I think the suggestion that women don't have computer skills is absurd. At just one major university near me, there are currently 3,792 women enrolled (36%), and every one of them uses Linux (the standard OS there). Many of them are programmers. I have a friend from Second Life who lives near me and I have met in RL. She teaches scripting classes in SL. (She doesn't use Linux though, and is not a programmer IRL.) She knows her video card because she bought it specifically to upgrade her PC for playing SL. (I on the other hand have no idea what video card I've got.) She also plays a first-person shooter video game all the time. Another female friend on SL, who I have spoken with over Voice but doesn't live near me, is a builder but not technical -- she plays other video games a lot. I don't play any video games,

Is it that they are not "real women", or that I am not a real man? LOL

Some of the other things that have been mentioned like pronoun slipups are accurate though. I believe I can often tell when someone is gender swapping (maybe I'm deluded), but mostly I don't pay much attention to it.

What sort of gender stereotypes do you ascribe to if any at all?

It seems that there is an attitude among certain male posters in this forum that if one "claims" to be female, and yet believes "A, B, or C", then she is clearly male and a poseur.

In 2003-2005 this was common in world with certain preconceived ideas like:

- Real women cannot build
- Real women cannot script
- Real women are not furries or neko's
- Real women cannot be tech savvy

Recently, I have seen people say things like:

- Real women do not like "X" sexual activity(ies)
- Real women do not seek out sex
- Real women do not watch porn
- Real women are not attracted to violent sexual activites/RP (in varying degrees)
- Real women WILL voice or cam verify
- Real women do not carry weapons
- Real women are not violent
- Real women do not like Anime
- Real women do not use Anime emoticons
============================

What do you all think of these sort of stereotypes?

Do any of them hold a sliver of truth to them?

Do any of them have truth to them in the year 2009?

Do you believe in any of these? Or have you once believed in any of these? If so, which one(s) and why?

First of all I'm a "real woman" -

- I'm a buyer, not a builder or scripter but I know know many women who do both.
- I'm not a furry or neko but know women who are both of these.
- I'm not very tech savvy but know women who are very tech savvy.

- I love sexual activities both in RL & SL.
- I seek out sex.
- I watch porn & enjoy it.
- I am attracted to some violent sexual activities/RP.
- I will voice but don't have a cam & won't get one to satisfy someone else.
- I do carry weapons sometimes both in RL & SL.
- I can be violent or very tender & loving.
- I don't give a shit about Anime.

P.S. - I think Pep & Chris Norse are hot! ;)

From: someone
sl- they rarely change clothes.

I indeed rarely change my look and outfit, but has more to do with the fact that I find there is not much to find for men.
From: someone
sl- favours women with beachball-sized breasts and pencil-legs.

I prefer the natural beauty in both RL as SL, not the skinny legs and silicon attachments. And I actually choose by character rather than looks.
From: someone
sl- thinks about cybersex a lot.

Cyberwhat?
From: someone
sl- is willing to cam/voice.

Voice makes it easier for me to talk with my girl (saves us a huge phonebill) but I never would ask someone to voice or cam to proof something.
From: someone
sl/rl- lack taste and/or refinement (unless gay).

I like to believe I have taste and refinement, and I am straight.
From: someone
sl/rl- have little appreciation for art or culture (unless gay).

Depends on the form of art, and I do apreceate culture (and my sexual preference has not changed since my previous statement of being straight)
From: someone
rl- cannot cook (despite nearly every kitchen ive ever worked in being male dominated).

Most women don't let me near kitchen appliances, due to explosion hazard if I touch them :D
From: someone
rl- are domestically helpless, unable/unwilling to clean, do laundry, etc.

Admits to not always recognize things needed to be done, but very willing to do my part.

There is one thing, that might be considered here that I absolutely would agree to: I have a hard time multitasking.
I heard that might be result of evolution, some studies seem to show that, but I simply know that if that is a stereotype, I surely fit that category.:)

Thats one thing I'd forgotten, and is something I find not only hard, but totally impossible. Incidentally my partner, who is also male, can multitask easily.

Thought of another one - I'm very good at reading maps, but when I do get lost I always ask for directions.
