What sort of gender stereotypes do you ascribe to if any at all?

It seems that there is an attitude among certain male posters in this forum that if one "claims" to be female, and yet believes "A, B, or C", then she is clearly male and a poseur.

In 2003-2005 this was common in world with certain preconceived ideas like:

- Real women cannot build
- Real women cannot script
- Real women are not furries or neko's
- Real women cannot be tech savvy

Recently, I have seen people say things like:

- Real women do not like "X" sexual activity(ies)
- Real women do not seek out sex
- Real women do not watch porn
- Real women are not attracted to violent sexual activites/RP (in varying degrees)
- Real women WILL voice or cam verify
- Real women do not carry weapons
- Real women are not violent
- Real women do not like Anime
- Real women do not use Anime emoticons
============================

What do you all think of these sort of stereotypes?

Do any of them hold a sliver of truth to them?

Do any of them have truth to them in the year 2009?

Do you believe in any of these? Or have you once believed in any of these? If so, which one(s) and why?

The anime club at my University was 70% female :)

Most of the others? There were some things I believed about how women are "meant to" write, but when I read Prok's blog my views on that changed..

stereotypes are fun to cartoonize, but only ignorant people buy in to them.

My personal stereo types:

From: someone

- Some Real women can build, some can not
- Some Real women can script, some can not
- Some Real women are not furries or neko's, yet some are
- Some Real women cannot be tech savvy, yet other real women can be

Recently, I have seen people say things like:

- Some Real women do not like "X" sexual activity(ies), Yet some real women love it!
- Some Real women do not seek out sex, Some real women seek nothing else.
- Some Real women do not watch porn, other real women watch it 24/7
- Some Real women are not attracted to violent sexual activites/RP (in varying degrees), yet other real women love it.
- Some Real women WILL voice or cam verify, though some real women don't
- Some Real women do not carry weapons, yet some real women can shoot sharper than the average man.
- Some Real women are not violent, yet some are extremely violent
- Some Real women do not like Anime, however some real women love Anime
- Some Real women do not use Anime emoticons, while other real women use them as often as possible.

With other words: Stereotypes are fun, but absolutely not realistic.

What a loaded question! As if anyone is ever going to agree that they buy into stereotypes.

Oh except for me. Stereotypes don't come from nowhere. They're either based in reality or cultural biases.

Simple answer to all the questions is No. If anyone believes any of those then they do not know very many women or don't know women very well. They did not hold any truth in 2005, 2003 or any other time in existance.

I am killing myself laughing at a question that claims to be investigating virtual stereotypes and putting "real" in quotation marks.

Pep (Real? Was Jessica Rabbit really a virgin?)

PS Real women don't play sl.

Some of those stereotypes, some! of them seem more age related in some cases.

Real women don't adopt mermaids,

- unless they are mermaids themselves.

i know when i was dancing me and a couple of the other dancers used to have a game when it slowed down to try and figure out who was a man acting like a woman dancer..

we never took it farther than just us..
mostly it was certain things they would say that sent us into IM's..
even if someone told us they were a man we wouldn't tell anyone else..
most were just really nice and some did it to actually get closer to the dancers which in a way felt like a compliment..

still it was fun and more of a way to pass time trying to figure out who was who..

IM *DING!*

Friend:Ceka did you see that?

Ceka: see what??

Friend: OMG scroll up some.

Ceka: kk..

Ceka: i don't see it what was it??

Friend: Ok let me grab it for you.

Ceka: kk..

Friend: "BRB i gotta go take a leak"

Friend: Ceka i bet that's a man.

Ceka: omg you Bitch!!!you know i am not ready for this in the mornings BLEH!!! i have tea all over the place now!! Bitch!!

Friend:ROFL!!!!

Friend:Ceka ? :)

Ceka: yes?

Friend: I lufff yu lol

Ceka:Bitch!!! lol

So apparently neither I or any of my RL women friends are really women, but some of my RL gay male friends are. Wow, what an eye-opener. :p

Excuse me but I can't see any reference to "RL" in this thread prior to your post.

Pep (Don't you understand the difference between "real" and "RL"?)

I guess if you don't know about Bells whiskey:-

or that it is possible to light it (admittedly usually the higher proof varieties, or when flaming food in the pan, but its possible)

then it wouldn't make sense.

But anyway, we're getting off-topic with what was meant to be a fleeting interlude.

You are demonstrating your ignorance: there is no "e" in Scotch.

Pep (I knew what you were attempting to say but it failed dismally.)

Actually, it can be writtten either way. Try using a dictionary next time. Perhaps we could settle on 'uisge', since that would be the original spelling. :)

But I suggest we leave this here, since we are distract and detracting from the topic at hand.

You are absolutely and completely wrong.

Pep (But you probably don't know the difference between Scotch whisky and Irish or American whiskeys)

PS You are not even posting your offtopic posts in the correct thread! :p

I just accept avs as the gender they are in SL; if they choose to tell me otherwise, that's fine. I have a mainland neighbor, who has always been female, to me; She recently 'took a deep breath', and Treasure, I have something to tell you. And told me she was a male in rl. I was like......oookkkk.........and? Was it a surprise to me? Yeah, I was clueless, no surprise there, I usually am very naive. Did it make a difference in my friendship with her? Not at all. And I still refer to her, as 'she', I think of her that way too. I guess she's had some bad experiences, though, revealing that information, when in her mind, the friendship was big enough to take it. It just didn't make a difference to me to find out otherwise, because she is still the same personality she always was.

I think stereotypes are normal. It's a way for us to simplify the complex world we are stuck in. A lot of people see things more in black and white, because if they saw everything in shades of gray or multicolored, as I do, they would take as long as me to make decisions and seldom get things done and would not have survived the ice age.

So I think stereotypes and even prejudice may be necessary evils, but people should not be mental slaves to them.

Sentences that start with "all X" are usually wrong ;) However some facts about an avatar tend to increase the possibility of them being guys in disguise. And usually, I am never wrong with my guess. Those facts are, in random order:

- uses linux (I am still to meet ONE SINGLE woman who uses linux)
- says "I separate SL and RL, and don't you even DARE to ask me anything about my RL!" in their profile
- never uses voice and when asked why doesn't say "I don't use it" but uses excuses like "mic won't work"
- their avatar has unnatural over-gendered proportions and looks like it's inflatable
- they very rarely change their outfit if at all (a SURE sign!! lol)
- they talk lots and LOTS about PC games when asked (very useful trap *lol*)
- intimate knowledge of PC hardware, prices, setup, technical issues, knows their video card model without looking it up etc. There aren't many women interested in that kind of stuff.
- scripter (I don't know any female, good scripters out there. However I tend to disagree about building/other graphics design. Many females do that.)
- if you are lucky they slip in theit language use, like "hey ladies" when entering a female crowd ;) Many languages also make a difference in male and female usage of verbs and adjectives (like Italiano vs Italiana). It is VERY hard to fake your gender when writing in those languages. So many guys slip. *lol*

I have been accused of being a guy a few times. There was this one idiot saying "you can't be a woman, your reasoning is too logical". To straighten in out, I muted him. *G*
