What sort of gender stereotypes do you ascribe to if any at all? It seems that there is an attitude among certain male posters in this forum that if one "claims" to be female, and yet believes "A, B, or C", then she is clearly male and a poseur. In 2003-2005 this was common in world with certain preconceived ideas like: - Real women cannot build - Real women cannot script - Real women are not furries or neko's - Real women cannot be tech savvy In my experience, SL has a greater number of IT/technologically proficient people than the general population so this is utter bullshit not just as a cultural assumption but as a statistical one. And a large part of creative community is female in fashion, art, et al. The rest are assumptions that are utterly idiotic and often quite false. My thoughts. |

Well, my rl wife uses buddy. Don't know if she would had her youngest kid not been a boy. When referring to her friends she also uses both ladies and guys as generic terms. Last time I checked she was definitely female.

============================ "What do you all think of these sort of stereotypes?" Bull hockey. "Do any of them hold a sliver of truth to them?" No. "Do any of them have truth to them in the year 2009?" No. "Do you believe in any of these? Or have you once believed in any of these? If so, which one(s) and why?" I might've believed women were not tech savvy...when the net first began. Not for a loong time now, though. People who believe these things have some seriously outdated views of women, imo. Oh and not all of us have as much practise with some of these things but it doesn't mean we're not interested, or that we can't. PS it seems those who want to pigeon-hole people by gender stereotypes forget that there are also transgender and mixed gender people as well. |

It just annoyes me that you constantly 'correct' my post while the mayority of this forum seems to have no problem to understand what I say. Wake up, the world is not perfect and neither is my english. That however does not mean I have no right to post here. You have every right to ignore my replies, however seems you cannot resist to constantly correct me. And that is annoying behavior and where I come from it sure is considered an insult. The reason why I find it highly insulting is also simple, look around on the forum, there are a LOT of people there that have much more problems with english than I have, however I don't see you correcting them all the time. But somehow you cannot resist doing so with my posts. So what else should I conclude? A very angry and upset Benski. I've used the 'Ignore' function for the very first time, ever, because of this thread. And you keep nerfing it by quoting the person ![]() Don't get upset. Just use click on the poster's name on the left, drill in a bit, and find the 'Ignore' option... life is just too short to have to deal with some things. Be well ![]() |

Do I really need to point out that your all here to debate issues, not to attack each other, or belittle people's spelling, or grammer.
Debate the ideas, not the other posters please, or this thread will go the way of others. |

Don't get insulted by such childish behavior. I bet those people who criticize your English would not be able to write the same post in Dutch, let alone in flawless Dutch. _____________________

I am afraid that if you get annoyed with people pointing out deficiencies in your posts then the forums are not the place for you. Did you feel insulted when your teachers pointed out errors? You are using this forum to learn, so you should be pleased that someone points out how to spell dyslexic correctly - although I am sure a spell checker would have identified that it was incorrect. As Mickey has pointed out, don't feel special. I point out the errors of lots of people. Because I have, many posters now take more time and care about their posts, I am delighted to say. It saves everyone else time if you have taken more care so we don't have to translate posts before answering. Pep ("Constantly"?) _____________________

Well, the funny thing, of course, is that every single person replying with "Well, I do this or that and I am a woman" could be lying.
I think the stereotypes are bunk, of course. I'm also not particularly pre-occupied about people's gender. There are some friends in SL who have told me enough about their lives that if they are not the same gender as their avatars means a lot of what we have talked about is lies, and I confess THAT would make me feel kind of crappy. But other than that, it's not something I look for in others. I don't spend much time thinking or wondering whether the person behind the av is the same gender as the av. Once in a very rare while someone will do or say something that gives me pause, but it's never been someone I was close with. And for what it's worth, I would never do voice or cam for any reason and certainly not to prove my gender. I'm not interested in the first place, and do respond to ultimatums, in the second. I presume a lot of women would refuse to for safety reasons, but maybe I'm just paranoid. |

Most people won't do as 'we' would do, so trying to apply one's personal standards to the world is an exercise in frustration.

Real Women concern themselves with:
love marriage husband children family in the larger sense and community, pretty much in that order. Some of them hold jobs, some do not, depending on circumstances. In SL, they know who they are and generally do not need or want pixel sex with others than their RL mates or Significant Others. All the rest is neurotic nonsense from people with head problems. Some of them very complicated head problems. That is all. EDIT: Real Men consider themselves very fortunate to find one such and marry her, and they are right. I am one of those lucky persons, so I know whereof I speak. |

These are English forums, Moaner. No, these are international forums. As long as the TOS don't state that you need to be of English mother tongue and/or have perfect knowledge of the language to use them it is perfectly fine to post here even if you make mistakes. You can just mute anyone you don't want to read. Problem solved! Pep (I have French as a good second language, but I would not dream of inflicting it upon a French language forum) This is very unfortunate because the only way to learn a language and improve your skills is by using it. _____________________

Har - so if a woman isn't particularly into romance, marriage, or raising children she isn't a real woman?
Dang. Oh whoops...worse...she's neurotic and has 'head problems'? Yikes. I hope you were kidding. |

No, these are international forums. The International Forums are here actually. It says so on the heading. /217/1.html As long as the TOS don't state that you need to be of English mother tongue and/or have perfect knowledge of the language to use them it is perfectly fine to post here even if you make mistakes. You can just mute anyone you don't want to read. Problem solved! Of course anyone can post in as fractured English as they like here. Just don't be surprised if your views, opinions and arguments are not taken as seriously as if you took more care in presenting them. This is very unfortunate because the only way to learn a language and improve your skills is by using it. And by having errors pointed out so you can know when you have made mistakes. Pep (The same applies when EFLers present posts in a flawed fashion, so don't feel singled out.) _____________________

First of all, sorry that I got overheated with this person, I hit Ignore too.
Secondly, back on topic: gender stereotyping. What about male stereotypes? I mean, I do believe stereotyping is mostly noncense, and have nothing more than pure entertainment value to me, but what are the most idiotic male stereotypes you know? _____________________

^ I'd like to know what the guys think are unfair stereotypes of them (RL and SL/online) too. I wouldn't know or hazard a guess, I'm not a guy! And I don't ask my brother these things. ^
