Wow, these a lot of questions.

From: Anya Ristow
How do you start an IM conversation when there is no open chat and nobody responds to greetings?

I read profiles. Then send an IM. I usually talking to people I already know, too.

From: Anya Ristow
How do you know who to approach for an IM conversation when there is no open chat and nobody responds to greetings?

I IM people that look interesting based on their avatar and/or their profile.

From: Anya Ristow
Is it normal for nobody to greet a newcomer?

Depends where you at.

From: Anya Ristow
Frankly, I don't believe all the conversation is in IM.

No, just the really GOOD conversation. I do not like conversing in groups, personally, in most cases. Even when I do, most of my attention is on my IMs.

From: Anya Ristow
I believe it's just not happening. If the easiest way to socialize (open chat) isn't being used, am I really to believe it's all happening in IM? Twenty people in a highly-recommended venue, and they're all in private conversations? And am I to believe it's like this frickin' everywhere?

I really don't understand what is so hard to believe about this. Does nobody ever IM you? Also, I question your assumption that open chat is the easiest way to socialize. In general, I don't like to talk over a bunch of people having different conversations and gesturbating.

From: Anya Ristow
"But I'm in IM" is just too convenient. It can't be proven wrong. I've spent hundreds of hours visiting all the recommended social places trying to develop a resource people can use to find out where people are hanging out *right now*, but gave up for lack of success. But all that effort can be dismissed with "but I'm in IM". It's not just unconvincing; it's a little bit insulting.

So everyone who is having a fabulous time IM'ing and voicing without including you is a liar and we have no way to prove otherwise ;P Hmmm, we are starting to see what the problem here may be ;P

I think I know the pic you are referring to Anya. I think it's just a bad photo, at an odd angle.

If you read fairy tales, there is a LOT of forest-dancing going on, and a lot of people in SL are fae. :)

Yes, that is just an awful pic. That is actually a very nice place. Unfortunately the times I have been there, Hera was lagged out so bad she couldn't move.

OK Anya - since you like statistics.

Here are my statistics based on many hours at the dance clubs:

On the dance floor:
75% are having a pretty good intimate conversation with their partner
15% are having a lame conversation, about to flee
10% are walking the dog, while their partner that they wished they had not asked to dance rambles on, because they are too nice to flee
25% of the 75% in an intimate conversation are also trying to pick up someone who is not on the floor - multi-tasking and covering every angle

Off the dance floor:
70% are trying to get ON the dance floor, and working their way through the crowd with IMs - many juggling half a dozen at once
30% just came to listen to the music, and don't really care to dance, and may not return an IM
15% of those may return an IM if you offer to skip the dance, and go straight to their place

There are IMs flying all over that place - guaranteed. Some times there will be Zero open chat - but those private IMs are flying. If you want to tag along some night, I'll tp you in, and get you started with those IMs.

i've spent more than hundreds of hours in clubs..i used to put in 40 hour weeks my first couple of years..if the general chat is spammed with woots and yoooo's \0/and gestures..yup the chat is more than likely going on in IM's..
a lot of people that club do have their IM's packed..especially the ones that work there if it is a popular place..
mine used to get so packed that i would be missing IM's because they would be on the other side of the scroll arrow that show the rest of your IM's..

more than likely if the general chat was dead you were in a room full of bots..Go to GOL's the 7th element..there are no bots there..

i will say the last year clubs had been filled with bots on the dance floor ..maybe not the full year but when they were really being pulled out of the boxes..with as many clubs that were using them and as many good clubs that were leaving i could see your hundreds of hours being spent around a lot of those..

but ya a lot do spend time in IM's
you won't learn anything poping in a new club every night but you will if you find one and stay there..just like these forums if they don't know you or you are more than likely gonna get either no response or a short and sweet hi and bye..unless your approach is something that brings interest enough for them to set aside their other IM's..
you are dealing with a lot of cliques when you go into clubs..some nicer than others some more welcoming than others..

hahahahaha wow that was pretty good :D That is a good explanation of what goes on in the underground of a club.. ;)

You forgot the 10% who are frantically slapping away the virtual wandering hands of their dance partners.

7th Element is the poster child of what I'm trying to say. I wrote this post about 7th Element...

http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/602439-post23.html

The only person I could get to talk to me there was the one person who responded to my turing test. He couldn't find anyone else to talk to, either.

I've been back there several times, the last about two days ago, and found the same thing. Crammed with people, but no conversation. A few gesture spams in chat and some lol's and other meaningless, 10-characters-or-less drivel that doesn't even look like it's in response to anything. And none of them will respond to a greeting or a question or a joke.

They're all in IM? All of them?

Jig, sweetness, you start out with a provocative question that you know is gonna upset some people, you admit that you like to stir the sh*t (I do too sometimes, so I'm not judging), but then you get offended and act surprised when people don't give you the kind of attention you believe your actions should provoke (this is where the disconnect lies, I think). A little more acknowledgment of other people's feelings and a little less martyrdom in your responses might improve things greatly.

Having said that, I believe most of us like you and would miss you on the forums and would never want to see you griefed in-world.

That's really considerate to say. Again, its really in way we say things - my stressing certain words in real as opposed to here in print. No, not offended but often surprised by responses. Some people extremelly in-your-face about issues and snappy and then declare I have offended them - it's a bit odd really. I know some people are ill here and some people even feel entitlement to gruffness and curmudgeoness. Some responses were simply venting at me.
But not meaning to extract any mopey feelings from this but I really should be less on forums and quieter. I think you are right but this is prolly a cultural dynamic? Not sure - hard to say. Anyway, it's all drama which I dont need and no one else does.
I'm off to get my hair razored in real and make a bacon and rosemary loaf.

omg i remember always getting IM's when i was on stage from men that were at the club with their wives or partners..

I remember it got so bad with dancers that the owner expanded the club and moved the stage back out of say chat range..so many wives ended up complaining..my guess is there was a lot of men accidentally sending something in IM to their wife that was meant for the dancers on stage hahahahaha
i think at the time our traffic was avg in the 90k's..and that was all people no bots or camping..

i would say there was so much socializing going on that it became a job for a lot of people that came there..hahahahaha :D

No, it isn't Jig. Not necessarily.
After even saying that you'd feel desperate if you couldn't dance "in real" and after reading some of the posts here I think it's a tad insensitive to go out of your way to emphasize that.

Let's be frank - there isnt much I can say that isn't going to get a caution.

Yeah, it is much easier to be misinterpreted in print. We don't have the non-verbal cues, so it takes a little more work to communicate. This will blow over and I'm looking forward to more posts about shriveled frankfurters ;)

They're all in IM? All of them?

i know GOL very well..i've been a part of GOL since there was a GOL.. i am great friends with the owner and the DJ's are on a payroll and are doing shifts..
when one is done another takes over..it's all them..the crowd changes over the day and night..i forget the traffic patterns but we had them all timed to switch over to different music for different time zones in the world when i was working there..

That club has had a following since 2006 and they had a time when they used camping back in 2006 in thier first version although they really didn't need it..it was more for people to earn money..we packed the sim back then ..then GOL2 was the opening of the school where they would school new people for jobs at gol..then GOL3 had camping but that was to keep up with the others using them..the dance floor was about half a sim and always full of people..the camping was up in the air..

GOL4 is when i went from dancer to head manager..no camping from that point on..
they used bots only for two days to test the effect it would have on traffic and there were none..plus people in the club were saying we don't need them..they told us it was just a test and they took them down two days later..

then GOL 5 went with no more dancers and became about the music and dj's and dancing..
same with 6 and 7..

they don't use bots there..they really never have but those two days they were testing them..they don't really need bots because the club is there because the owner loves to make clubs and loves that people come to them..
he told me he feels it is them showing their love to him and his work..

GOL is one huge family that has evolved over time with it's employees and customers..customers there feel very close to the place..

you were not talking to bots you were talking to people that have seen every kind of advertising that could ever walk into a club..50L wouldn't grab attention to anyone in there..they are tipping in the hundreds and thousands there..
Heck designers used to come in and drop their new work on us hoping we would wear them on stage..

it's not your avg club..it's a big clique with a bunch of cliques within it..the owner would not allow bots..
I know him too well..he actually cares what people think of his club and he is proud of it's reputation and i am glad i was a part of it being hired before it's first club ever opened..

so ya they were in IM's or doing their gestures or they were just not responding to someone speaking in english.they were just ignoring what they thought was some scam or scheme..and why the other guy wasn't being answered well he may have been new too or not being understood..who knows lol
he would have given you another answer otherwise..

myself when i worked there i talked to everyone i could that IM'd me because i loved it there and to me every person walking in the door was important to us..

i'm not manager anymore and there are no more dancers there..so i don't know how their internal department works..but i do still go there and they all talk to me..so i guess it is a matter of being either known or trusted to get to know..
but i see the general chat always active..

i am there every day..stand where the teleport to the place is and tell me they are all bots landing to walk to the club lol
i just landed here and 6 people landed right after me..it's the norm for here..it hasn't changed much over the past three years..their traffic bounces from the 50k's to the 70's and 80's ..thats not bots..people with bots adjust to the drop in traffic..GOL's has always fluctuated..
