From: Treasure Ballinger For someone who is paralyzed from the neck down and typing with a stylus in their teeth or blowing air into a tube to type, dancing is quite a thrill.......as is walking, for that matter. A visual of dancing, I agree, but I dont think we can answer to its "thrill quotient" for a person in those circumstances - in my case, I think it would create a sense of desperation because I couldnt actually dance. We mustn't speak for those who are in such circumstances. But, I cant see how it provides for a compensation of a real experience.

From: Mickey Vandeverre I can't understand this appeal of repeatedly asking questions with an off the wall judgment, in order to get a rise. Why do it? It's the format I apply in real - ask a question and elicit an audience response by offering a judgement on the question. Usually this stirs up the responders enough that interviewer is disliked intensely but the hook is baited and the question can't be ignored. Call my opinion a kinda "academic freedom" - I wouldnt be Jig if I didnt voice my opinion in one way or another. As they say, "You gotta love her"

Art, is visual and how is art a stand in for anything other than being a representation of the artist's thought process of what they experience? You get immense pleasure out of art, and collecting it. I see no difference between that and the visuals people are describing by dancing in SL, and in fact, dancing has the added bonus of the emotional connection which comes with it. Food for thought.

This thought might already have been said, and if so, sorry. Yes, I do. It kinda goes hand in hand with what I do for a living in a positive way.

Food for thought. The music is the art in this case. The dance in sl is not aesthetically pleasing since it is so robotic and, in most cases, "purchased". I understand that link but thia product in sl is simply only a dimmed process compared to that fireball of creativity in that real experience of dance.

Food for thought. That's a great way of putting it.. I used to say dancing in sl felt like art and people told me i was too immersed in sl hahahaha I would get so offended by it that i would go into detail of all the time put into it..Then would hand them mics and have them get on my huds and showed them a whole different way of dancing.. I would control the huds and have us all doing different things then when the timing in the music went to say a chorus we would all chime into the same moves.. hahaha it was great seeing them have so much fun..I had so many routines already in my mind and my music stream with my playlist that it was just a matter of getting them on the huds to get them immersed.. oh now this is dancing ceka!! No behbeh !! This is art!!! hahahahaha I am actually in my sim right now dancing by myself hahahahaha woot booyahhh!! \0/ than you than you vury much

You of all people should know art is subjective. Stop being a fucking elitist snob. It's getting old.

For one of my family members who LOVES dancing in SL, the appeal comes from the fact that she has Cerebal Palsy and will never walk, or run, or snowboard or dance in Real Life.

And, incidently, puh-lease ... now you're just being bitchy. Are you having a bad day in RL? You're not answering any of the substantive comments by folks who have honestly responded to your OP question: "Why do it?". You appear to have your "ears" turned off. You're a lot of fun inworld, Jig. But here in the forums you don't demonstrate any awareness of the difference between provocative discussion and trolling. People are not toys for you to play with. From: Urban Dictionary Troll: One who purposely and deliberately (that purpose usually being self-amusement) starts an argument in a manner which attacks others on a forum without in any way listening to the arguments proposed by his or her peers. .

Then Jig, get down on your knees every night and pray to what ever power you subscribe that you never have to find out how the mind can compensate for the loss of physical ability. I can answer the "thrill quotient" , it is there for me and for many others I have talked to.

Because the idea of dancing has power and strength well beyond actual dancing. The visual representations of dance in world stimulate those ideas, drawing on their strength and fuel the imagination. That and SL fancy dress costs a lot less than RL fancy dress, there are no worries about commuting to or from a dance hall, you can drink as you like, even as your avatar dances, with no worries about driving home afterwards. Oh, and it can give a live band more reason to feel appreciated. And its fun

From: Ciaran Laval Jig I generally find you rather bubbly and happy but your lack of understanding in a scenario like this is startling. "Desperation" for someone who is paralysed is extremely disrespectful. The sense of "desperation" is describing how I would feel if I was in those circumsstances. Please dont look for disrespect in my responses where none is intended. Hence, "in MY case, a sense of desperation that I - I - couldnt actually dance." I would be desperate as I am sure anyone would be if I was paralyzed. That is ME I am describing. And, by the way, I HAVE been paralyzed (thankfully only for minutes) when I fell desperately ill at age of 21 so I kinda know how I would feel - f%cking scared. Once more, please don't look for disrespect from me when i certainly dont intend it. Okay???????????????? So how about NOT using me as a kicking horse all the time? I actually found comments by others to be sanctimonoius in considering that a person who was paralyzed could possibly find looking at an avatar dancing some sense of relief from that situation they were in.

From: Jig Chippewa So how about NOT using me as a kicking horse all the time? All the time? When did I ever use you as my kicking horse? I mean once, name one example. a year or so ago there was a story about a japanese guy who moved his avatar by brain thoughts, do you not think such a person would be thrilled to engage?

Now you are looking for a problem in every phrase I am using. No, I do not consider moving avatars with brain throughts "thrilling" for someone. I can see courage and persistence and intense hard work, but it's not thrilling for me to realize that I can do something another person can only dream about. It means I must never take for granted what I can do. "There but for the grace of God go I"

Really? Did you find Chris' comment sanctimonious as well? I assume it made a difference that he is speaking for himself? Being deaf, I find it thrilling to dance in SL. Music is too distorted for me, in RL to be able to dance, to follow it.. It's something I used to like to do, when I could hear. Now, I can dance in SL, regardless, the pose balls or dance balls or huds do it for me. It's a good thing, a happy thing. You want first person? ok........what do you require, a bunch of disabled people to come in and tell you first hand why they like to dance in SL? I rarely 'kick' anyone, Jig, but your insensitivity is just mind boggling in this thread. You aske 'WHY' people like to dance. Disability in RL is one reason. There's nothing for you to argue about here. It's 'an' answer to your question, not the only answer, but an answer.

/me pokes her head very gingerly over the parapet . . . Personally, I disagree with nearly everything that Jig has said in this thread. I agree that her "pedagogical methodology" is deliberately provocative, and even trollish. And I think that her views on disability and virtual activities border on the insensitive, at least in the way that she is phrasing them. I think it is entirely appropriate to take her to task for all of these things. I'm not trying to call anyone in particular out on this, but this thread has featured a lot of very personal attacks on Jig, as well as on what she is saying. For her part, she has not replied, so far as I have seen, with a personal attack on anyone. Can we focus on her views, rather than on her personality, level of maturity, etc., etc.? /me tightens the straps on her helmet, and takes cover again.

From: Jig Chippewa Okay, this is getting ridiculous. Now you are looking for a problem in every phrase I am using. You made an accusation, I asked for an example. I'm not getting into a big argument about this but if you're going to make accusations then you should back them up. From: Jig Chippewa No, I do not consider moving avatars with brain throughts "thrilling" for someone. I can see courage and persistence and intense hard work, but it's not thrilling for me to realize that I can do something another person can only dream about. It means I must never take for granted what I can do. "There but for the grace of God go I" It means you can engage with people in a fashion you never could have done before. I was talking about how it was thrilling for the guy engaging with his brain waves, who couldn't talk, who could now socialise. That's the beauty of virtual worlds, it makes people more equal, it brings together people who would otherwise never engage and it offers hope to people.

There's nothing for you to argue about here. It's 'an' answer to your question, not the only answer, but an answer. Okay Now I am getting miffed. Firstly how do you know I dont have a disability? It may not seem particularly horrid but I have 30% loss of hearing and permanent tinnitus that causes ALL music to sound distorted which is very hard considering the importance of music in my career. "Mind-bogglong"? Gimme a break. I am sorry, I just cant fathom this "Oh shock! Jig's said something that has a hint of insensitivity in it! She can't possibly understand how others must feel." Horrors. Read something of what other people post in these threads - anti-women, anti-cultures, anti-disadvantaged. Anti anti, anti ... In past year I have managed to pull through watching my dad die a miserbale fucking death AND do it with dementia which had turned him into an imbecile who danced along hospital corridors naked - dancing in front of a dying man for fuck's sake. I have had to drag myself back from the dge of extinction after a bloody awful accident by sheer bloody sweat and blood and tears, and I have had to work my ass off to maintain my own sanity in face of misery at times. This is too fu$king much. I gave a thread that was interesting to answer that's all.
