We choose our animations (dances, whatever) as an expression of our emotional/psychological state of mind.

This I agree with. My dance collection is eclectic. I consider them my signature dances, and very much an expression of my individuality. Pity about the lag, because seeing the choices people who have put together custom sets make is interesting.

Dancing is the vertical expression of a horizontal desire. ;)

Pep (but it allows you time to determine whether, in fact, you want to. :p )

Why dance?
Why get dressed up?
Why non-human avatars?
Why carry a purse?
Why have pixel sex?
Why ... whatever?

It is all the same. Because I want to. And I agree with Skell, it is as simple as that. No other reason is needed.

*planting tongue firmly in cheek*

I can't understand this appeal of logging in to sl. Why do it? Okay, I understand its potential for chatting while picking someone up, but avis can't send body signals and facial language to each other in sl like we can in real. In sl, a relatively short movement sequence is repeated ad infinitum and clumsily at that. I also appreciate that people who are confined by a disabiliy can expeience something of the "normal life experience".
But really, people, why submit yourself to the horrors of lag and self-abuse by moving your hand around and doing a St. Vitus dance imitation when you could be having sex with your partner in comfort of your own bedroom or a Wal-Mart dressing room?

*removing tongue from cheek now*

In SL we can be anything and do anything, Jig. We can be DJ's and make people happy by playing good music for them to listen to. We can be dancing fools, even the geekiest among us who would find "having two left feet" to be a major improvement in our dancing abilities. We can slip the surly bonds of Earth and take a trip into the weightlessness of space. We can be artists, architects, or rocket scientists. We can be successful businesspeople. We can be mustelids. We can let our imaginations soar without the constraints that RL society impose on us for no good reason. We can, in short, be fully alive in ways RL will never allow us to be.

If you have so little imagination and vision that you can't see around the technical limits into the realm of imagination then why do you even have an account with SL?

Why Dance in SL? A Sad Commentary on Life.
This is another one of those questions that leads us down the slippery slope towards the ultimate question: 'Why do anything in SL?

Why do people have houses in SL? Why do people eat in SL? Why do people dress up in SL? Why do people get married in SL? Why do people have babies in SL? Why do people put up megaprim tree screens in SL? I do find myself at a loss to answer one or two of those questions, I admit!

So why do people have babies in SL? (mind you, why do they have them in RL?)

Fine be that way.

I dance because I choose to. I love it in RL, and I can think of no better way to while away the time than listening to a good life show, and twirling with my date. :)

I remember the moment i became hooked on SL..It was when i first clicked onto a dance ball..like day 3..A lot of my SL was about dancing..

I could never just click play and dance..I had all my animations memorized and each spot that would blend into any other animations to make it look like i never switched..

lately me and some friends have been working on stage shows mixing those animations with instruments and working on stage effects..It's far from boring..experimenting and finding new things that work in combination with others is half the fun..

This is what my screen looks like now when i have fun dancing..Although i use 4 huddles now instead of just the three..

You're kidding, right?

Why is SL sex any different from SL dancing? isn't it every bit as much "a relatively short movement sequence is repeated ad infinitum and clumsily at that"?

If the answer is that SL sex transcends the animations because of the imagination you put into it, or because of the words you say to eachother in IM or chat while you do it, then consider the possibility that those of us who enjoy SL dancing are putting the same imagination into it as you put into SL sex.

Also, go find some better dances.

I love dancing in SL because it's fun. I like watching my avatar spin and twist like she just don't care. And I love dancing with my sweetheart - I adore it - because time spent in each other's arms is what we long for above all else. And, here's something else you might not have considered - making love to your partner while dancing. Or do you need repetitive clumsy sex animations to get yourself in the mood for that?

You don't like dancing? All right, fine, no one's making you do it. But your comments here show a startling lack of imagination; I really can't understand where you are coming from, if SL sex interests you and SL dancing does not.

Because dancing is one of the best ways to share a private conversation, to flirt, to seduce, to just plain get to know another person. If you are halfway intelligent you can send those body signals and facial expressions with emotes. Besides, Feline and I look damn good when we are dressed up and on the dance floor together.

That! Will and I also look damn good too.

I'm cute and dancing is cute. So, when I dance, it's 2x the cute. =^-^=

Simple math, really. (^_^)y

I tried it but it just doesnt scratch my itch. Am I the only one who finds it abysmally boring?
And dancing in real isnt that hard. Most people clomp around coz they have shyness, I guess or ... okay, yeah, I can see the situation; some people simply can't dance: physical reasons etc.

For someone who is paralyzed from the neck down and typing with a stylus in their teeth or blowing air into a tube to type, dancing is quite a thrill.......as is walking, for that matter.

You and Feline look damn good dancing even if you aren't dressed up. When one arrives at the Hangout, to find you and Feline dancing, alone in the room, even though you both are friendly and speak and chat, I can feel the 'coupledom' between you. It's quite lovely.

I refuse to dance in SL, except slow dancing (or the horizontal mambo). But sometimes it is fun to watch other people dance.

I think it's like smiling.

Here are some facts that have been repeatedly demonstrated in scientific studies.

Seeing someone smile tends to make most people feel happier.
Seeing a picture of someone smiling tends to make most people feel happier.
Smiling tends to make most people feel happier.

I believe that seeing a little smiley like this :) makes most people feel a little happier. (Yes, I also know that they can be annoying, especially when overused.)

And I suspect that seeing animated bodies dancing has a similar effect. I suspect that effect is even stronger when one identifies with one of those dancing animated bodies, or associates one of them with a friend.

Because it makes me happy.

I don't need any other reason.

"If you have to ask, you'll never know."

A dance can lead to a dance without end. I am still dancing. (Except when I fall asleep :o )

Because it looks better than a room full of stock-still zombies. We choose our animations (dances, whatever) as an expression of our emotional/psychological state of mind. I mean if you're fine standing like a statue at an event / gig/ performance then fine. Other people may choose to animate their avatars with dances. Good for them. It's not sad. A room full of zombie bots is sad.

This, I think.

For me, it's aesthetic. I could stand around and cycle through the "stands" in my AO, which are quite nice, but get a bit dull after awhile. Or I can do a nice dance (it has to be a good one) and enjoy the view of my avatar looking reasonably graceful.

I do enjoy couples dances, but I like dancing on my own, most often for no real "reason" at all. Just because it looks nice. Not everyone gets it: I used to get a lot of "you DO know you're still dancing, right?" IMs from people who thought that it was odd that I was dancing in the middle of the square at Open Latte. And I occasionally got in trouble for dancing on the roof there, but that's another story. :D

It just looks nice, and moving in an aesthetically appealing way is every bit as satisfying as having a lovely new outfit or hair.
