/me would like, in memory of Jig, to start a new thread on the horribly corrupting influence of the 1980s culture that permeates SL.

Even if, in this instance, it is horribly corrupting Canadian 1980s culture. :D

Everything goes better with '80s pop culture!

You know, Jig, I rarely get involved in this kind of thing. Your question didn't push my buttons at all. Legitimate, typical even, Forum thread. It was later when you appeared to pooh pooh the idea that a person who could not do certain things in real, could enjoy doing them in virtual. Being involved with the disabled community in SL, I simply know that it is true. Furthermore that they enjoy it. Why is the concept so hard to wrap your mind around? Everyone who is disabled isn't feeling 'desperate' about it. (I know, you said that YOU would feel desperate). But accept the fact that some don't, and they find things that they enjoy, like dancing up a storm in SL. Why couldn't you merely accept it as one of the answers to your question? There's just no need to argue about it, it was 'a' legitimate answer to your original question.

Sometimes it doesn't hurt to say, you know, after thinking about it, I could have handled that differently, or even say, yes, I do see your point. If you'd accepted it as one of the answers to the question you asked, and moved on, rather than rejecting and arguing about it, this thread never would have turned into what it did. Your thread asked a question. This was one of the answers given to the question. End of story, really, or rather, it could have been.

LISTEN, for the millionth time, I never "pooh poohed" anyone. I said that I - ME - would be desperate if I was in that situation and that dance animations would NOT do anything for me. Further, I suggested - suggested, mind you - that relatively healthy peopel HAVE NO RIGHT in really thinking what any disabled person can enjoy or not enjoy. What people didnt like was that I was commenting upon a "sacred cow" of this society. Please read what I write more carefully. An dont worry, I wont be writing much more anyway.

THIS is what I wrote that has caused all grief ...

"A visual of dancing, I agree, but I dont think we can answer to its "thrill quotient" for a person in those circumstances - in my case, I think it would create a sense of desperation because I couldnt actually dance.
We mustn't speak for those who are in such circumstances. But, I cant see how it provides for a compensation of a real experience."

Now do you see how it all refers to me? My lack of being unable to understand how it would be a comfort? I did NOT say it wouldnt comfort them - I said it wouldnt comfort ME.
Now please get off my case.I didnt say anything "bad" - ONE person chose to misread this statement - and this person ALWAYS jumps on me in these forums - and all hell breaks loose.
But this misreading and misrepresentation of what I wrote has managed to achieve its goal - my "reputation" is tarnished and I lose any credibility I have because of a prejudiced comment by someone else.
I dont mind controversy - I do mind being labeled as something I am NOT.

Let's be frank - there isnt much I can say that isn't going to get a caution.
Don't try play the victim, just take responsibility for the fact you incite people to react like that to you.

Bottom line, stir shit, take crap - end of story.

You might want to use this time away you are supposed to be having for genuine reflection on what people have said instead of dismissing it out of hand as wrong.

I can't understand this appeal of "dancing" in sl. Why do it? Okay, I understand its potential for chatting while picking someone up, but avis can't send body signals and facial language to each other in sl like we can in real when we are on the dance floor and "in da groove". In sl, a relatively short movement sequence is repeated ad infinitude and clumsily at that.

From: someone
I tried it but it just doesnt scratch my itch. Am I the only one who finds it abysmally boring?
And dancing in real isnt that hard. Most people clomp around coz they have shyness, I guess or ... okay, yeah, I can see the situation; some people simply can't dance: physical reasons etc.

From: someone
I can see a point if you have all day to ponce around on a dance floor, but I cant see it working as a great pick-up place for people who have limited time. It seems too harnessed to the computer, if you know what I mean.

From: someone
It's the format I apply in real - ask a question and elicit an audience response by offering a judgement on the question. Usually this stirs up the responders enough that interviewer is disliked intensely but the hook is baited and the question can't be ignored.
Call my opinion a kinda "academic freedom" - I wouldnt be Jig if I didnt voice my opinion in one way or another.

From: someone
The music is the art in this case. The dance in sl is not aesthetically pleasing since it is so robotic and, in most cases, "purchased". I understand that link but thia product in sl is simply only a dimmed process compared to that fireball of creativity in that real experience of dance.

as was stated, i usually enjoy the responses elicited by your questions. but this one touched nerves on ALL fronts. and whether you know it or not, you did kind of poo-pooed anothers experience with the disabled. just because you get more thrills with SL sex than you do dancing, does not give you the right to dismiss others enjoyment of dancing. just as you state:"that relatively healthy peopel HAVE NO RIGHT in really thinking what any disabled person can enjoy or not enjoy.", you have no right in thinking what they should and shouldn't. not jumping on you, just trying to make you see what we are seeing in your posts.

But, see, *I* am not that person. It takes a LOT to take me to the place where I came at you like I did. I have never, ever said anything against you in these forums. So whoever that is you are referring to, here, that person wasn't the only one who got upset. This would go a lot better if you saw someone else's side, and said ok, I could have handled that differently.

Weird, two of them are the official videos from the record companies that published them.

They were "Words" by Missing Persons, "Space Age Love Song" by A Flock of Seagulls and "I Want Action" by Poison.

Anya or well anyone,

When I am out dancing with friends I will usually spot an outfit that I think is cute and IM the person about it, and no I dont do that in local chat. That usually starts a conversation.

When I am with my husband yes we listen to the music and chat in private. We usually greet people coming in though.

But to say there is now socialization hmmmm maybe your in the wrong crowd. Cause yes I can have several windows open at the same time conversing. Unless it is with my honey, then there is just the local window and our window.

Yes we have found places that people dont talk in local chat but hey that is ok too, that is them.

Dont understand this ummm for lack of a better word fixation on everyone talking in local chat.

That's precisely how I started a conversation today. I wish I could post a two-minute clip from that conversation that corresponds to the minute with the post I quoted. I'd have to be daft not to at least wonder if the two were related.

And I don't understand the resistance I get when I wonder why open chat isn't used for chat anymore. Once upon a time it was normal to use open chat to, um..., you know...chat. Three years ago it was easy to find conversation just about anywhere. Now when I wonder why this isn't true anymore I'm told open chat isn't where the real chat happens anymore. Huh? Did I miss an announcement?

And what of these private IMs people insist happen so much. Used to be it was normal for me to receive multiple IMs out-of-the-blue. Even if it was just an ass with an insult at least I knew there were humans present. Why doesn't that happen anymore? Night and day difference. It just doesn't happen anymore.

I invite anyone to go to 7th Element and dance in the middle of the crowd and record open chat for an hour or so. Copy it into your favorite text editor and edit out the gesture spam and see what's left. Try to find even a single exchange that makes sense. Try to find even a single comment of more than 10 words. Try to figure out who people are responding to in saying the things they do.

Greet people and see if they respond. Ask a question and see if anyone answers. Crack a joke and see if anyone responds. Say total random crap and see if anyone wonders what you're talking about. Offer free Lindens and see if you get any takers. I've done all of these things, repeatedly, with almost total failure.

Am I just imagining that I remember people talking about lag, or computers, or where they are in the world or what time it is, or having to go do stuff IRL, or people apologizing for missing part of the conversation, or asking how to do things, or where to find stuff, or commenting on what someone's wearing, or cracking jokes or responding to jokes, or greeting new arrivals, or bidding people good night, or, heck, even insulting or griefing or bragging or...

Why, in a crowd of 40 people, does none of that happen anymore?

There's something wrong with *me* that I find this curious?

I think it depends on where you go Anya. The club I occasionally work at,we are all long time friends and have things to talk about in chat. So chat is always going on and hardly ever silence. I think the bigger more popular places have less "regulars" to carry on conversations. JMO.
