Ok...
I absolutely -LOVE- dancing in SL.
Why?
I dunno. Its just fun, and it really gives me a nice opening to be chatty and meet people.
But I also love just watching my avatar go at it. Enough so that I've bought a dance HUD and filled it with my own set of dances.
What's fun for one person isn't for another. When you grow up, you'll realize that just because another person doesn't have the same interests as you, doesn't mean their interests are illogical or unfounded. Sometimes people just like things - and there is no rational explanation.

Not if you use a different state's flag.

From: Jig Chippewa A visual of dancing, I agree, but I dont think we can answer to its "thrill quotient" for a person in those circumstances - in my case, I think it would create a sense of desperation because I couldnt actually dance. We mustn't speak for those who are in such circumstances. But, I cant see how it provides for a compensation of a real experience. Hm. If you see a ballet or a philharmonic orchestra or the Pina Bausch dance company, or french movie where a couple is whispering something interesting while a slow dance or something like that, would you call it wasted time and lack of cempensation for the real experience? Theater? Cinema? Concert? A picture? A novel? I mean: we are all creating here our own movies, so to speak, while being the actors on the canvas and directors in one. It is not just watching, it is active acting. People here are architects, sailors, pilots, dancers... and millions of other creations, while directing them to act somehow - and in this or that way, you are part of the scenery. Anything is here visual. It is made for that. It is not made for physical-touching or "reading" mimics. Even if I build a couch it is no compensation for building a real couch, because this would need months and material and knowledge and skills and whatever, but in SL I build one in 5 minutes. Thing is made for playful people in any meaning. A bit back in my biography I made pirate ships with LEGO and plastic figures had to fight against the royal marine, hahaha. This was also and fortunately no compensation for the real experience to run into a real sword or to be bombed into pieces by a real canon-ball. However: if you point on dancing, you point on anything we do here. And in a bigger picture you point on anything what people are doing in creating sceneries, like theater, ballet, a piece of music, any art, or any simple things. A book, for example... A greek drama... Or a feminist theory to penetrate the innocent and smooth minds of others with steeply erected ideas, ever in hope the ideas will be quoted for free by followers or critics so that people getting mind-pregnant with these ideas and maybe a population will be infected by these ideas to maybe change their daily behavior... If you recall the old Travolta movies... They made people shaking their bodies while sitting in the cinema seatings... And if not then they created *somehow* a feeling for the seen moves. Whatever... All this is available as overplus of fantasy and for that we are humans, as far as I know. Oh, not complete true, because even my cat is sometimes hunting phantom mouses...even without real compensation, but she is doing it for a hint of success. Oh and maybe you are a human who is dreaming sometimes. The cinema in your head. It happens. As kind of "second life". Even without real compensation for whatever. So, from my view is dancing in SL just normal. As normal as sitting as an avater somewhere on the grid and playing Alice Schwarzer or Simone de Beauvoir (without the compensation of the real experience). edit add:

From: Pserendipity Daniels Confirming even further my point about the lack of care people take in miscommunicatiing their posts. Pep (Using the vernacular is doomed to cause miscomprehension in a multi-cultural environment) Although sometimes a sharp dig in the vernaculars gets the point across very well, I find. -- Aes

You can dance if you want do But you can leave your friends behind Your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance Then they;re no friends of mine.

I have this recurring nightmare, in which I keep opening a thread in the RA forum, and finding quotes from the same kitschy 1980s song repeated over and over again. And then come the visions of huge sculpted hair, and I awake screaming . . .

It just struck me as absurdly ironic that the person who asked this question is called Jig

From: Gabriele Graves It just struck me as absurdly ironic that the person who asked this question is called Jig I'll have to pay for this one. Jig is my REAL "petname/nickname" from my family because when I was little I danced all the time. I have studied expressive arts and theatre in UK, Africa and USA so part of my training is as a dancer. But dance is only part of what I do. No secrets there. But I also use Jig since she is a character in Ernest Hemingway's short story "Hills Like White Elephants" who contemplates an abortion. Many implications for ME there. In Hamlet, the Prince declares he will not be the"Jig-maker". The clown or the Fool. But in a sense he is that and many other things. I like that phrase "jig-maker" and NO, Gabriele I do not suggest I am like Hamlet. A jig is a trap or a baited hook. A lure. A temptation. Jig also means sex in Pidgin Nigerian (apparantly) - "jigjig" My name is carefully chosen. Once again, I repeat, I have NOTHING against dance in sl for others - it isnt my scene. I hope people get pleasure from it but there is a sadness when people cant have opportunities to dance or express themselves in real life by dancing. The meaning of sad in that context was plain to see if you opened your eyes. I never said SL life. I meant in all life. What else do you wanna know? I am part-Jamaican, with mixed English/Dutch/Italian/French biological Dad, I drive an MG, I am an excellent chef ... Now, Gabriele, lay off me.

From: Nina Stepford RACIST! WTF are you talking about? A Jig is a dance. An Irish Jig - surely you have heard of it? Dancing a Jig? From: Jig Chippewa I'll have to pay for this one. I'll repeat myself here because I have no idea what you are blathering about. A Jig is a dance. An Irish Jig - surely you have heard of it? Dancing a Jig? That is the only meaning of Jig I was aware of or alluding to. As for laying off, grow a spine - nothing I have said is in anyway a personal attack. I comment on what you say only. I don't care who you are, what your RL or SL details are as an individual - I only care about what you post. If you post stupidities then I may on occasion comment. If you cannot stand a little criticism then you are taking things far more seriously than how you advise others to take you and that is just tough.

I can't stand SL dance because I used to run dance clubs in RL. Dancing is one level; getting it right to make people dance, that's something else. And I mean: really, phenomenally, outlandishly something else. It just creeps me out that people are sitting at a computer typing a w and then about 50 o's to indicate "ex-cite-ment" - in my experience, very few dancers vocalise when they are seriously committed and in the groove. The expression is in the movement, not the voice.
In RL it used to take me about 2 hours to get into a dance frame of mind, and another 2 hours to loosen up and step into the right place - that duration and that process are nothing like what happens in SL, and don't seem to be what dance anim designers are doing, in any way: so their products creep me out. I *know* what makes dance work in RL. I've done it, got the t-shirt, yada yada: SL dance is quite literally something else.
Until someone makes "avatar pupeteering" a reality, or the overall latency of the entire system from end to end allows us to make the avatar throw it's next move as we tap a key while listening to the streamed music, the whole thing will be a bizarre sham.
