So, are any of these packs everybody is talking about going to be available anywhere? I missed this thing by hours and I think I'm going to cry.
Oh yeah, they'll be available.. you can count on that.

Egads, Two Thousand Eighty Prims? Wow. Thanks! Still love to see what everybody else has. Probably great variety out there now.

On Nicholaz' blog page, he made the comment that this recent spate of megaprim creation, while the opportunity was there, spoke of an excitement and sense of community and cooperation like he hadn't seen in some time, or words to that effect. I have to agree; I really, really enjoyed seeing the "rally around, here's how to do it, any special request" cooperation going on.

New megaprims excitedly used by new builders, who promptly encroach on other people's parcels all over the place. 2. At LL, Cyn (VP Support) knocks on Joe's (VP Development) door and requests a technical solution to the huge bubble in tickets re:encroachment. 3. Joe fully greenlights and staffs Andrew's "Megaprim Liberation" project, part of which is giving residents tools to handle parcel encroachment (or at least this was part of it last time I checked, please feel free to correct me, anyone who knows). 4. "Megaprim Liberation" happens before the end of 2008! /me dreams ![]() |

Prospero's comment on the blog has me a bit uneasy...
http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/05/13/bugfix-121-server-deploy-tue-0513-thu-0515/#comment-606282 Re: megaprims. I am not in a position to comment on that at this time. Watch this blog for further information about megaprims. I would point out, however, that we **are** at the moment allowing continued use of the megaprims that were created years ago as a result of a bug in the server and an exploit. As for discussion and reasons for the rest, as I said, I’m not in a position to speak for the Lab on that, but we should hear in the blog sometime in the next few days about that issue. For the time being, I would point to this, which was our last statement on the issue, and which points out some of the complexities of the issue: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/10/12/the-big-prim-problem/ Note the phrase about megaprims made years ago being allowed. I hope he's not implying the new megaprims will be removed... :\ _____________________

Yes, the 3rd party viewers were released shortly after that, but prior to her being willing to share that vital information openly, it was impossible to wrestle it out of anyone, and I honestly think that if she had not done that, it would have remained a secret for a select few. Thank you Winter Ventura for putting yourself out there. *cheers* _____________________

This has been my fear as well, a check for onrez size, and now a check for creation date. THAT would truly suck. ...which, of course, would be SOP for LL... _____________________

Considering that the new generation of megaprims are better behaved than their ancestors, for the simple reason that we didn't have to torture the hell out of them to get the size we needed, it would truly be stupid to allow the old ones but not the new ones.
Then again, LL has a solid track record of doing the stupid choice... _____________________

goddamnit!
do not pack too many objects on the same object container. The object inventory loads too long. The freebie "unpack(any)" script fails to create a list to unpack them into a folder due to stack-heap collission and it seems i gotta rewrite its procedure to give one packet before it runs out of memory, then clear the list and make the next package part to unpack. sucks to clean your diaper. |

I think if LL had a big enough problem with the 'old' megaprims, they would have done something about it by now. Linden has shown themselves capable of swift and decisive action when it's something they want badly enough, or have some external (non-resident, obviously) motivation to complete (see: the banking ban, crackdown on adult entertainment). The difference here is it's a technical rather than simply a policy problem. If they wanted to make it a violation of ToS to use the old megaprims, they could have done that, even if it would have been too much trouble to troll through the astronomical number of prims in all the objects in the world to seek out and remove them. This isn't to say they won't do something in the future, say, when they beef up the asset server to handle such a search, but if megas were problematic enough, either in terms of resources or contexts like griefing or parcel encroachment, they would have acted. I think at this point the megas have proven themselves to be largely harmless, at least from a technical standpoint, and are ingrained enough in the world that it would be more of a disruption to take them out now.
I don't think we'll see any new resident-to-resident problems like a new rise in parcel encroachment. If anything, people can start using megas that are closer to what they actually need, rather than having to pick between a 16m or 20m prim with nothing in between (plus now we'll see big walls less than half a meter to a meter thick). If you were going to encroach on your neighbors with megaprims, you already could have last week. If you were going to grief Sandbox Island with a region-filling cube, you could have already. This new, greatly expanded set of better-behaved megaprims will benefit the legitimate builder with greater flexibility than it will aid the griefer. And thanks for your pack, Ceera! _____________________

This sounds rather ominous:
Furthermore, Linden Lab confirmed that account sanctions still apply to users who are using megaprims in mainland simulators, though they are permitted for use in simulators within private estates, except where disallowed by the land covenants or owner. (I know the official policy has always been "not ok on mainland, possibly ok on private sims" but it seemed they loosened up a lot over time in practice) |

Are these really as bad as dimpled megaprims, because they are made whatever size without dimpling doesn't that mean they will perform better than a megaprim?

(I know the official policy has always been "not ok on mainland, possibly ok on private sims" but it seemed they loosened up a lot over time in practice) I use megas on mainland, within my own land (And overlapping a little, but still centered on my own land and only overlapping underground. I've had I think 4 Lindens see my stuff using megas on mainland, and never mention a thing. I think they only ever prosecute if someone reports issues based on the use of megas on mainland. _____________________

i have been giving away Gene's prims (<=50m, "60+ huge prims"
since shortly after his release march 2007 (atleast! 2 sets each day!)I have never seen / hear anyone say, they got their huge-prims removed on basis of not being allowed to use them, i myself have used them in almost all builds since that time, in 2 cases certainly noted by a Linden also since that time, i have always been on the look out for any reports/stories concerning them, if you have the time you can find a quote from a ranking linden somewhere in the forum, saying they will not remove any huge prims, because of their widely use (this has to be atleast 6 months ago, meantime their use has 10 folded i am sure). All the real quotes ive seen where positive, and mostly unquoted "rumours" said it would be against the rules. _____________________
