I've had several people come by Moran and make quite a few megaprims. Come on down! There's still time!!!

Thank you from a noobie
05-14-2008 16:39
Hi,
My husband Madtiger is a noobie builder and he just learned to play with mega prims so he was very excited when I found this thread and the Nickolaz viewer yesterday :^) Of course by the time he could actually play with it the rolling restarts had begun but the good news is that it hasn't hit Ratmaw yet! So a big thank you to all the posters on this thread for my new megaprim "sized to fit" grass which replaced 14 prims and for the mega prim kits that have been posted so far...I signed up on SLX just to get the collection of 2000+ free mega prims. I put a hearty vote of YES! for a Megaprim repository which will make it easy for noobies now and in the future to find these gems...plus it saves me running all over the grid in search of the kits as Mad wants them ALL (of course) and he had to leave for work :^) |

I'm chasing a 50x50x40 cube if anyone has one by any chance, so I can put a hole in the 50x50 face. It would save me a fortune in individual underwater concrete pours for my submarine base

Cool new 50x50x40 is installed stopping the beach from extending onto govenour linden land, which I wouldn't have thought was that bad but seeing a Linden returned it once with no comment I assume someone didn't like that.

If there is an in-world location where these sets are being collected for distribution, will someone please send me a LM for it? Thanks.

I've been thinking about this, and how to organize it, and so on. I'm wondering if perhaps something like this might be in order:
A box with all megaprims that have one dimension that is in the range of 11-20 A box with all megaprims that have one dimension that is in the range of 21-30 ...and so on. That way, you could either grab a copy of all the boxes (to get them all) or just grab a copy of a box that has a prim of the size you need in it. It's a bit simplistic, I know, but given the huge variety in sizes, I'm not sure what might be a better sorting/organizing idea. Suggestions? _____________________

A box with all megaprims that have one dimension that is in the range of 11-20 A box with all megaprims that have one dimension that is in the range of 21-30 Into which box do you put a 8 x 12 x 64? I plan to organize mine by form... Beams & Rails Volumes Thin Panels I'll further divide them by primary cross section, e.g. 12 x 12, 15 x 15, 20 x 30, etc. If you want a common organization you're going to discourage people from participating who don't like your scheme. I have thousands of these things. I'm only going to organize them once, and I'm going to organize them in a way I like. |

I have thousands of these things. I'm only going to organize them once, and I'm going to organize them in a way I like. Good question; I suppose in the most brute-force method, it would appear in 3 different boxes: the box for prims that have a dimension that's in the 1-10 range, the box for prims that have a dimension in the 11-20 range, and the box for prims that have a dimension in the 61-70 range. And I wasn't suggesting forcing anything on anybody; just wondering if there were some way of organizing them that a putative organizer (or organizers) may want to use when setting them out into a public repository. It wouldn't even be necessary for a creator, such as yourself, to do the organizing. For example, you could give a copy of your boxes of prims to the organizer(s) of the repository, and he/they could reorganize them into the way the repository has them sorted. That's all. _____________________

I have my set boxed and labeled now. 329 prims. I divided it into 5 batches. One is all the tall thin stuff, suitable for making towers, tree trunks, poles, rails, wires and the like, with the long axis on Z. One is all cubes. One is those which are somewhat thinner on the X-axis, for making torii, rings and tubes. One is stuff that is very thin on the X-axis, for making walls, fences, and roof panels. And the last is thin on the Z-axis, for making roads, walkways, floors and the like.

Cool, wow there's been some work put into thesewhich will save a lot of work and a lot of prims for many.

Cool, wow there's been some work put into thesewhich will save a lot of work and a lot of prims for many. Very true. My mouth is positively watering at the thought of the prim savings. Just as an example in my own experiments: I've taken a castle from 182 prims down to 54, and the 54 will drop to 34 as soon as the sculpties for the crenelations on the tower tops are to my liking. I've taken a certain small shop build from 31 prims to 11, and since there's a row of 6 of them, that's 120 prims' worth of savings right there. And that's just the early attempts... _____________________

Is there a guide or resource somewhere on how these can be used? For example, cutting, twisting, changing to other shapes like spheres or rings or??? I know next to nada about megaprims and am actually a bit nervous about rezzing one at my home.
Thanks! |

Is there a guide or resource somewhere on how these can be used? For example, cutting, twisting, changing to other shapes like spheres or rings or??? I know next to nada about megaprims and am actually a bit nervous about rezzing one at my home. Thanks! A few things to bear in mind: Megaprims do not show correctly on the Mini-map. They generally show as large squares, whose shape and orientation don't relate to the actual size or visual shape of the megaprim. For example, a 0.01 thick, 50 M long 1.5 M tall fence might appear to be a 30 M wide square. And the square doesn't turn if you angle the fence. A cut or dimpled prim may be problematic to rez or walk on. This is true even with normal-sized prims. Most of the "useful" sizes in the original megaprims were made by dimpling or cutting a limited number of initial megaprim sizes and shapes. So the old 100 x 100 x 2 megaprim was actualy a 100 x 100 x 100 cube, heavily dimpled. But its bounding box was still the huge cube. So rezzing on it or in the area that was within that bounding box was a problem. The new megaprims offer a much wider range of original sizes, and where you can manage to find a new one that matches the size you need exactly, that will be preferable to cutting a larger one down to the same size. If you do use a cut or otherwise altered megaprim, be aware of its current bounding box. If that bounding box extends into someone else's property, it can cause problems for them, even if the visible part of the magaprim does not cross that parcel border. Personally, I would still be very cautious when using these new megaprims, and try to be very aware of any sudden increase in lag or other issues where they are used. If they cause problems, don't use them! _____________________

All the cuts, twists, tapers etc. still work on them. _____________________

With the help of a friend who's land was still allowing it I was able to make a bunch last night. I measured my store and home builds to get exact dimensions I needed and went to work at it. I haven't added them into my store yet but I figure when I do I'll be able to cut 60 or so prims off. It was awesome to be able to make them myself at the exact sizes needed. I also made a 50m Saturn planet, hollowed inside...think I might turn it into my new workshop in the sky.
Thank you to everyone in this thread for explaining how to get all this done...also, I had never used the Nicholaz viewers before this, now I'm hooked on that too. |

my favourite little secret sandbox just got updated and im done with what I could do.
please just sort them simply, primarily x-axis range. secondarily y axis range. tertiary z axis range (if many have the same x&y range). just because that is how "sort by name" also works. anything else is just inaccurate and lost in translation. |

You can only place so many objects into the contents of a prim so, when boxing them up, you need to decide which ones to put in which box. I think that is what they are referring to when speaking of organizing them. _____________________

So, are any of these packs everybody is talking about going to be available anywhere? I missed this thing by hours and I think I'm going to cry.

Sim just restarted
.I read through Andrew's office hour transcript, but unless I missed something (I just skimmed through it ), none of the reasons against megaprims were technical, but rather practical (return overlapping prims, prevent returning overlapping prims, attachment size limits, etc).Since we have megaprims already all of those practical problems exist today already, increasing the limit slightly (up to 20m or 30m for instance) in anticipation wouldn't really make things any worse than they currently already, especially in light of the recent "exploit", but would be incredibly useful. "I would like to finish Megaprim Liberation before the end of 2008" isn't very promising . |
