Maybe registring a player AS a bot (and ban accounts that don;t properly register) so LL can kick them in peak times might be a solution that would work for everyones issues...

---------------------

Here's my approach:

When you attempt to log in, your position in the queue is set by your monthly spending (sum of billing and L$ spent). SO if you own an island, you are high in the queue. If you are non-premium and earn a lot of L$, and then spend it, you contribute to the world, and so also get higher in the queue. If you are a bot that never spends a dime, cause you only are there to get traffic points, you go to the bottom of the list.

AND

When load is high, avatars that have been logged in the longest get kicked out. Sane people don't need to be logged in over 16 hours straight, but bots often stay on for days.

Lots of people seem to think LL has a plan for only allowing Premium accounts to log in during high load times. And that they just never followed through with it.

http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/02/16/contingency-measures-to-ensure-service-as-second-life-grows/#more-777

This post on the second life blog is where the so called plan was announced waaaayy back.
As you can clearly see, they DO allow Free accounts to log on in this plan, as long as there account is marked "Payment Info Used"

Under this plan a free account as long it has used it's payment info at least once can log on.
My Grid Status now says only 45,288 odd are online and it's open. Still login fails. Makes a shit of all the info given in the above link.

Thanks for reminding me why I have not bothered to come to this website in months. Nothing but rude people (okay not all of you, but enough). :-P

[UPDATE 2:47 pm PDT] We’re re-opening logins.
08-24-2008 14:57
So how come the login page says its disabled 10 min later?

(from reading the posts in this thread, it appears logins were active for about 4 minutes, then closed again, right about when the message was posted to the grid status page that it was open)

It's called "the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing". And now the staus page says logins disabled again anyway.

I got in, then crashed after a few minutes.

Now it's "Higher-than-usual load" and "Logins disabled until further notice".

Hmn, I'm in. I had hesitated to try (I'd sat down at the computer about 40 minutes ago but when I saw this thread, decided to wait to see what people said before becoming part of the load).

It said ~56,000 people on, when I got in.

16 hour limit explained
08-24-2008 15:11
There have been days I have stayed logged in 16 hours total, but rarely without a break. Sane people need to eat, use the bathroom, and sleep. If someone has been logged in for 16 hours straight, and actually playing, as opposed to being a bot, perhaps they *should* be logged off for 8 hours, as a health and safety issue. They set limits for truck drivers and airline pilots for consecutive hours on the job for that very reason.

So the point is if you have been logged in 16 hours *straight*, with no breaks, either you are a bot, or you *should* go to sleep. Either way, you are a candidate to be logged off forcibly when load gets high. You had your chance to play, now let someone else in.

(got in finally)

Request for opinion: what stresses the system more, teleporting or rezzing something from Inventory?

I think we should be taking the hint and no longer paying.

I'm not ready for that yet, though.

Yeah, I'm a premium account and I got the old 'excessive load, logins restricted' jive and I'm not happy about it.

Listen up, Linden Lab..... when you hit this point start throwing bots off the grid to let in real people whether they're premiums like me or free basic accounts. People should take precedence over bots every time. Is that so difficult to comprehend?

As Winter approaches and more people are indoors and logging in it's only going to get worse. It's pretty lame that I cannot get into the game and yet thousands of ALT BOTS can be logged in contributing nothing and sucking resources from the game. I guess my money doesn't count for anything.

It was nice while the system was running ok for the last, what maybe 6 or so weeks. Now it looks like we get to ride the lamecoaster again.

Agreed

The ironic part is that the login screen shows that SL is online and has 65,368 members inside. But it has shown that for at least 30 minutes.

So...does this mean that the way SL is set up, the most the system resources can safely handle is 65,000 members. Seems we always have some problem once we get over that number.
