Would you pay to attend a live performance?

No, I wouldn't. I tip the musician him/herself and will often tip the venue, but I am not going to be charged to listen to an SL musician. For one thing, the game is too fickle. What happens if you pay to attend and you crash, or the musician crashes? What happens if the game goes down? Will there be refunds?

So, no.

As to tip validation, if someone throws $50L, there's no possible way you can know if that's a tip or a slam. A quarter? Are you for real? If that's seriously all you have in your pocket, then maybe it's time for a car wash or a bake sale or something! People would blow more than that on coffee at Starbucks but SL jams aren't worth it. Maybe they're not. I don't know.
It's really not a question of whether people will pay for tickets but rather whether they'll pay for anything at all.

I have tipped $50L before an at time it was my last $50L, it depends a lot on how I am finacially an how many people I need to tip, but my tips range from $20L to $400L.
I also woulf like to think that everyone in the room tipped $50L it would be something better than 2 people tipping $100L.
Also I would to think that non silent tip jars thanking donations might shame a few into opening their pockets.

Oftentimes the musicians crash out of SL just from sheer lag and heavy use of their computers while performing..they stay up in the stream though, so you can hear them even if you can't see them, and they usually come back as soon as they realize they've crashed. Also, usually if the sim crashes everyone just comes back and the performer carries on, going over time to make sure the venue gets the allotted amount of time.

I think that if someone disliked your work, or wanted to make a point, they would tip 1L. As we are not privvy to the amount that each avi has in their virtual wallet at any given time,I would suggest that any amount of double figure or more would suggest nothing more than thanks, and as such should be appreciated.

I wonder if they could make tip jars for you Silas where you only accept tips above a certain amount?

Kinda brings up the extra question of whether a tip is seen as a virtual form of payment of a virtual thankyou.

I'd never think someones thankyou was too small.

Well, for a start the buy pass would be set for longer than the event just incase, perhaps 24 hours anfd it's ony $10L, it's 3 cents, see as a donation, less value than a jelly bean.

If its only 10 Linden why bother? Most sims can't support more than 50 people, so they wouldn't make enough in a cover charge to be worth the trouble. When I tip a musician, I usually tip 500L on an average performance, 1000L on a good one. Why risk messing with other possible good tips to make 2 USD Dollars??

Have you read this thread at all? If 50 people showed up that would defray 1/10 of the usual booking cost, at marginal cost to the visitor.

Non-silent tip-jars have the opposite result with me. I blush and mumble to myself if/when the performer thanks me by name (though I am happy when they do). The non-silent tip jars annoy me, though. I want to be able to give without a neon arrow pointing at me, without my name on the tip jar as the last person to tip (and with whatever amount was last tipped), or to have the tip-jar spamming chat thanking me.

Therefore if it is non-silent, if it is a loud tip-jar, I'll tremble slightly, and maybe leave. Sometimes I'll tip near the end and then flee before it can register and spam chat. Sometimes I'll see that and feel uncomfortable standing there not tipping, uncomfortable tipping non-silent tip jar, and leaving early.

The jars which embarrass me are those that post the amount ... in my case, I have to camp to raise the 10L for the jar. It looks rather pathetic when the previous resident has just popped 200L in ... despite every tip being appreciated.

You shouldn't be embarrassed, Derek. The point is that you are contributing - the amount isn't important in the slightest. I'd be thrilled if I could get every person who came through my club to drop 5L in the donation box!

You do not have to camp. Not trying to make this into an anti-camping thread, but you have options other than camping. You are just not using them.

That said, it is still appreciated, even if it is just 1 L.

I'm with Lexxi & Derek on this one. Non-silent tip jars really seem to me to be a "pressure tactic" - however innocent it is intended. I prefer a personal thanks or none at all...and just know that I contributed.

(I'm speaking here of where I spend most of my tipping budget - classes - but I would imagine the same type of tip jars are in live music venues as well.)

Well people who would tip will probably still tip possibly a little less and it'll make the ones that won't tip $10L even cough up for a change so the people who are tipping big don't have to support their right to free music. If I pay $10L to get in then I will still tip $300L if it's worth it regardless, so they make $310L from me plud the tips from others, and $400L from the 40 cheapskates who wouldn't contribute a cent otherwise.
And some sims handle up to 100 if the sim is built well for low lagginess. I've been to events with 40 and another 20 locked out on mainland sims and also island sims with around 80 people.
And yep I tip instructors at classes too. Having talked to at least one instructor after her class was set to give up after a measly $50L appreciation from 30 people and a couple of disruptive "students" didn't help, $40L of that was my tip, fortunately I think she did run more classes otherwise but haven't seen her inworld for a while now.

Well if others around you who won't ever tip would also put in $10-20L then you would look good, I thing perhaps as Lexxi said it can be embarassing maybe it it should say a simple "thanks for the tip" in chat without hover texting any names, maybe just the total tips recieved. btu I have found myself forgetting to tip aometimes when I wished I had, and because the tip jars wern'e there , they weren't noticable, and maybe they were silent when other people were tipping them.
Forgive my typing , I can spell but not type............

I also do not want to side track this thread from the OP, but I am confused by your comment. I have been in SL for about 7 weeks. Camping is my only income. I make 10L an hour, which gives me tip money. I dont spend it anywhere else. I dont think I have the skills to make me employable, and the thrill to me of SL is from the music scene and the social contact I manage as a result. I have looked at other money making schemes and they do not appear trustworthy, eg surveys. Tying myself into creating money seems to me just another trap which I am shouldered with in RL.

Any enlightenment would be greatly appreciated !

Derek, come by the club tonight. I'll give you something else that will help you make money and is a whole lot more fun than camping.

Many of us just use credit card, can earn in 1 hours RL overtime more money than the equivalent for 10 hours working in SL, beside camping is boring :)

Honeybear, happy rezzday :-) (didnt see you yesterday, so I am a day late ;) ).

Since I never go to music events, I would not pay either. The only one I want to was at Honeys club and of course I tipped. Both the venue as the artist if I remember.

Many people probably don't know that the performer gets payed and the venue only costs money, else they would tip the venue more then the artist. So maybe the goal is to get people informed better. Covercharges will do no good in SL, not yet.

I do not use my credit card online for personal reasons. Overtime is not something available to me, and you are right, camping is boring. I use the time to do other tasks, eg planning, surfing, emails or whatever, so the time is not wasted. I normally envisage that I can earn 20L max per day, 10L min, based on access to good camping. Typically 100-150L pw.

@ Honeybear, thank you, I will pop by when I can, bearing in mind I am on UK time ... goes away curious as to what could be so much fun :D

The HOURS you spend to earn 60L could translate into hours spent DJing in SL earning $800L. I know Honey is looking for good DJs - as are many venues in SL. I will send you a free voucher to learn DJing in two hours. Then you can afford to tip the performer and pay to enter the venue that is hosting the performer.

Very cool Lias! Derek, take her up on this offer, it's a good one! I've been through it myself as part of my managerial training.

When you work it out 20L is what? about 7.5 cents US .... it costs you more in electricity to run your computer for a day... when you think about it that way your actualy loseing money camping.....

ah now I see... I think I will decline, with all gratitude to the good intentions.

I am not an outgoing person, and the thought of DJing fills me with morbid horror... I have done my stint in public performance as a classical guitar player, and never did master the fear ...
