Modern Brits bastardize the original English language just as badly as we Americans.

Fixed it for ya!

Pep (I agree!)

PS It is "bastardise" with an "s" because it has a Latin root rather than a Greek one.

Ah well, it's Friday here, the OP has had her way with us and is dining on Chianti and Fava beans [maybe with some "nice" guy] and we are all chasing crumbs around the table, shaking our virtual napkins and sipping tea ;) Maybe she will return to tell us her definition of nice?

You know, Pep, the English language even in England had gradually changed without any help from us Americans - I mean you can survey works by Chaucer or the Bible and then go further up in time and examine works by someone like Edward Gibbon. Big difference.

Something about grandmothers and sucking eggs comes to mind.

Pep (I am *not* complaining about change, just misuse and misinformed criticism)

Nobody cares Pep. Your thoughts about judging people and points based on typing/writing skill on a message board betrays you.

The smartest person I know, sends me text messages that look like they were written by someone ten years old. He "can" write properly, but in the text message forum, it has no importance to him.

My guess is that most here feel the same way about this message board. I assure you, I can take my time, read back through, and be a paragon of accuracy. That just isn't a priority to me ... I type what I type, hit submit, and mistakes be damned.

Apparently so.

Pep (Your view doesn't invalidate mine)

PS I thought *all* txt messages looked like they were written by 10-year-olds. :p

Your viewpoint is invalid on it's own.

The amount of emphasis you place on the written word as it relates to this forum, is questionable. You judge someone intelligent, because they write well, when they may be just a person that writes well. You judge a point as lacking merit because it's poorly presented, when it may just be a poorly presented, excellent point.

I'm sure most of us here know people that can't think their way out of a paper bag, but have superior communication skills, and vice-versa.

I don't have to invalidate your viewpoint. The dynamic is so poorly thought out, you have invalidated it on your own.

No I don't. I have never said that. You are a victim of sloppy thinking.

How can I tell if it is an excellent point if it is badly presented?

Agreed. Most politicians.

I don't personally know anybody whom I consider intelligent thinkers who are unable to communicate effectively.

Sorry, your own skills in argument are considerably more defective than you appear to believe them to be.

Pep (Returning to my placing emphasis on the written word here; what other criterion would you suggest I use?)

Since this is SL, that may or may not be true. I was once told by a guy that if all they wanted was some decent sex, often the air heads were best - they would not want to talk afterwards and could be pushed out the door easier.

Ahh, but I find that the well educated, creativily inclined, and literate women provide the best "cyberz". The novelty of the visuals can only excite a new SLer for so long (if at all). I doubt an air head would have anything particularly stimulating to say that didn't involve five lines of "mmmm". Air heads would make good partners for product testing. :D

I wasn't engaging in argument, and none of these points are about me. I can find merit in almost any level of communication.

Good point. I do have to remember that the brain is needed in SL else the texting content will usually suck.

I guess the airheads are only really good for RL.

Yeah - he even admits it. It was when he was living on the beach in Calif during his college days - no I did not meet him there. He is a good friend and I love to tease him about that. He will also tell you right away that a brain is a requirement for any woman that is going to stick around.

I gave up on men in SL. You want to find a real man in SL? Date a SL girl.

People who rely on grammar corrections, spelling corrections, et al - especially when they go after non-anglophones - and who try to project an image as being above the rest of us hoi polloi, generally have some very real confidence issues. Compensate much?

I can pretend to be an erudite jackass all day long. Does that make me special? Does that make me right? Hardly.

OK my question is in three parts like on Blind Date.

1) Where do I go in sl to find nice guys with good conversation. I mean straight men that don't think they are god's gift and don't talk as if they are texting. I have tried Sweethearts and Phats because I thought that the odds would be better on finding a diamond in a pile of rocks in a big place but that was a fail.

2) How can I attract the nice guys while scaring off the idiots. Is there any magic I can do with my profile.

3) Less seriously what are the best and worst chat lines you have heard. Don't bother about hi, A/S/L and wanna.... as I have heard them already.

I take it you mean with a view to eventual romance?

I know people who met in SL and:

1. married in RL
2. are lovers now in RL
3. had a SL romance, but are married in RL and are just good friends
4. have a romance there which in no way crosses over into RL
5. their relationship is purely sexual, not much romance going on
6. have a great SL friendship (only, and confined to SL)
7. have a friendship that has crossed into RL
8. throw rocks at each other

If you could indicate which one/ones appeal most, I know a number of nice guys in SL, and one very good introduction agency.

Evidence? References? Justification? (Probably not, eh?)

You'll have to pretend a lot better if you don't understand what I have actually stated. Where have I said that actually being literate justifies an incorrect opinion?

As an example, just because I may have said I don't like the colour green, it doesn't necessarily mean I *do* like the colour orange.

Still checking in to see if I get that "Thank You" for the hook-up....whether it will come in the form of kind words or simply a finger gesture.
