I've been using Valerian for years as a roleplaying name, having taken it from the the main character in the movie Dragonslayer (which had the best movie dragon I had ever seen, at the time) - a girl who grew up disguised as a boy, to escape the virgin lottery. It is also the name of a herb commonly used for aiding sleep, or soothing jangled nerves, I believe. Romeo I chose because my RL first name is actually Juliet.

I had someone stop me in-world one day and ask if I realised the signifigance of the names I had chosen - I stopped and looked anew, and realised that in Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet", Romeo took a sleeping potion, to feign death, and so 'sleeping romeo' seems rather appropriate. My conversationalist pointed out that it could also be viewed as Valerian = soothing and romeo = lover, so 'smooth lover'. She said such a name was doubly weighted with meanings and I should be wary of it. I'm not quite sure how to be wary of my name, but I do love it.

And yes, I have RL friends who call me Val, from time to time, and I dont mind it - tho I like my RL name alot.

I find it funny the number of people who chose names unthinkingly, or thinking it would be only a game. I have met people with names that I just refuse to use in text - why would someone call themself something that others will be disgusted by? I dont get it.

Babs Loring

When I first heard about SL, at first I was like..that's crazy, why would anyone put thousands of dollars in to a game? So, after reading about it online, (where else) I decided to check it out, heck why not it's free, right? So, after all the preliminary stuff, it came down to a name. Now, I have other online names for games like WoW, but there was no way I was using one of those, and I figured they didn't expect a name like I use for my email address which would look totally odd, now that I think of it. Sooooo, I thought why not use something that is connected to me...my nickname in RL, Babs. Now, what goes with Babs.. so I started scrolling through, and since I wanted a totally different name than I have in RL, I chose Loring, no other reason than my RL last name didnt' start with an L.

Now, after saying all that, I have really come to love Babs. She is to me, a cool and fun "avi" who I enjoy dressing up and doing things I can't do in RL with. BUT, her personality is all me. I never pretend that she is anything other than an extension of me in a virtual world.

I do have alts and have chosen names in a similar manner for them too, one name is one I would have loved to have named my daughter in RL. Another is the name of a favorite character in a book..but I keep the same thought with them, they are an extension of the RL me.

I loved reading about how everyone came up with their names, and it was something I had always wondered, so thank you for posting this, it has been fun.

Oh as for using my SL in RL...I do sometimes when signing emails, but being that Babs is a nickname, it's not totally odd.

Since this is an alt- I wasn't sure what I was going to pick. And then I found the last name of England, and I like cats- so Cat England it is! Not much of a story to it- 2 of my favorite things in my name. It can't get any better for me- and this alt is now my main account and the other names have fallen to the side...

Every summer in the arctic, the tundra catches on fire, usually from lightning strikes. Sometimes tundra fires can get huge and burn thousands of acres before winter comes and they die out on their own. Since the tundra sits on permafrost and it is also technically a wetland, bog, or swamp, I find it oddly amusing in a sick way. I use it as a metaphor for a really rotten day. I mean, what could be worse than having a tundra fire, a half frozen swamp burn for your sad six weeks of arctic summer? OK, there was that time I was almost stomped to death by an angry moose in my yard that was a little worse, but AlmostMooseStompedMama just didn't have the same ring.

hmm - TundraFire is cool, but I still disagree !
moosemissamammastomp ?

anyhoo -
why do we have to pick from a selection of family names ?
I can't see that it serves anyone apart from Lindens

Looking thru the list now, I suspect that they have exhausted their imagination. How about letting new users have a bash ?

someone beat me to crimson, so i picked an olde spelling.

1) Start with the 1st 3 letters of your last name

2) Add the first two letters of your first name

3) Add the first two letters of your mother's maiden name

4) Add the first two letters of the city in which you were born

5) Then you are allowed to remove one letter to make it sound cool.

Ummm... Kinsacuma.... cant think of which letter to remove so i left them all in.

pet and street name ? Jennie Kenwood. Quite smart, but a bit parochial...

I chose Imogen because it was a name i used in IRC for a long time, and is rare enough to be a bit unusual. I chose Saltair because i just liked the way it tasted in my mind. I found out later it was a holiday resort in america.

Imogen Saltair is very like me, in most ways except the physical, She is the person i would be if I could start over knowing what i know now. She is the inner me, the me I am in dreams, the me I am with the lights out, the me I wish i was and hope to be reincarnated as. (except I want to come back as a man).

Great thread, I am sorry i missed it first time around in the spring.

Imogen

Suddenly I feel much better about the name Tex.

Since I can't log in, and Im waiting for my snack to cool, I was wondering if you'd like to tell me why you picked your SL first name and last name, and what they mean, if anything to you. I've seen some names I cant pronounce, first ones, also, and just wonder what they mean. Would you change it if you could?

My sl name is my real life name shortened... put sweet in front cause I fancy myself a sweetiepie :)

I'll jump in this thread too. My RL first name is Jon (although I don't go by it in RL, I primarily go by my middle name, Marc). My father used to call me "J Marc", and then later changed the "Marc" to "Cat" for one of two reasons.

He says it's because I crept up behind him like a cat, and he would never hear me coming. I say it's because we were on vacation, and he saw a bag of "Johnny Cat" cat litter and teased me with it.

In any case, "Jaycatt" became the first part for many years.

When I joined SL, I was looking for a suitable last name for a cat, and ended up with Nico, thinking it was pronounced "neko". I have since learned "neko" is pronounced "neck-o". Oh well! hehe

my first name "nibiru" is the fabled "planet x" that's supposed to be on a very elliptical path that crosses our solar system every 3600 years and causes some havoc. it coincides with the mayan calendar in its visits with us. it's supposed to have red trailing tails on each side of it and is larger than most if not all planets in our solar system.

my last name "republic" was such an odd last name that i took it.

oh, and "nibiru" is supposed to do a fly by in 2012. (go figure)

My BF and I joined the same day, joking around he named himself Lecter and I followed with Clarrice, spelling it horribly.

Didn't expect to stay around long...but...still here...and kept Clarrice anyways..

(at least when you misspell you have the only one, hahaha)

A lot of people think that my name has something to do the the "Invader Zim" show on the Cartoon Network, but I've actually never watched it. I first started using the name Zimmy back when the "Makin Magic" expansion pack came out for The Sims. I wanted names for a new family I'd created that were plausible, but slightly off-kilter so I ended up with Zimmy and Varla Mystico as my magic using couple.

The name sort of stuck around but got shortened to just Zim when I started playing MMO's as I wanted something short and easy to type / remember. Gunsberg was the best match available from the list that sounded like it could really be the last name of someone named Zim :)

I chose mine because it sounded magical and mysterious. As for Clawtooth, sounded like a good furry last name :)

My brother started in SL soon after and chose Rif Clawtooth because he loves the game Inherit The Earth and also wanted the same last name :)

(being lazy, pasting from a different thread)

"Phoenix" Sol was already taken, and I enjoyed creating this name!

This thread does bring back to mind a rather hilarious bit of history as my sweetie and I read through the names, carefully considering several and outright discarding many.

"well.... what about _____?"

"ew. Sounds too much like _____!" (repeated too many times to recall any exact detail)

"Ok. how about Polk?"

"I am NOT about to march around this place named after a street from San Francisco!"

(The list of choices at the time was overpopulated with them).

Sol was an obvious choice, instant fit and I've never had the urge to change it.

Then to end the sign up, we counted down and both hit the submit button on our respective machines at the same moment, to ensure that we both had the last name of Sol and the rest is semi amusing history (to us anyway... winks)

(adds) I've always enjoyed the creative ways DJs stumble on it at times and sometimes I'm prone to put it into my titler. (fun EEK suh)

P.S. we did notice on our last trip down to San Francisco the other day, there is a street called Linden.
