1) Start with the 1st 3 letters of your last name

2) Add the first two letters of your first name

3) Add the first two letters of your mother's maiden name

4) Add the first two letters of the city in which you were born

5) Then you are allowed to remove one letter to make it sound cool.

I don't think I'd much like being called "Haramash"

sometimes I'd like to change my name to something less goofy.

but... oh well :)

I knew that I wanted some sort of 'clever' name.

In the list that I had to pick from, there was'Vogel' which means bird in German and a few other languages. I knew that I wanted a bird name, so Robin seemed just right. (Seemed to flow better than 'cardinal' or 'oriole' or 'woodpecker'...oh my, now THAT would have been some name!!!)

Clever or not, Robin I am :)

My first name is my RL name. I didn't think I would remember to respond to another name lol, so I stuck with what was familiar. It also means 'clear bright light'
Silverspar, I spotted in the list, It sounded vaguely...I suppose you would describe it as ethereal. It reminded me of the moon, which I love, but i thought it went with both Claire and the meaning of Claire.

My alt is called Chandra. it also means 'moon' and I chose Tigerpaw because it was the only one in the list I could find which was available with Chandra and which sounded OK. I did want Diana Dumpling, but it was taken.

Lastly is Lollipop Sideways. I was sat thinking of names and I got given a Chupa Chup, my brain just clicked onto Lollipop and Sideways kinda goes with it. I love the sound of the name Lollipop. I call her Lolli.

My favourite name on its own is Lolli's but I relate to Claire's name first. I just get confusing when I talk about Claire in the third person :S lol.

I removed two letters in order to sound cool :D

Holoraja? I think I'll stick with Rob.

Why did I choose Rob as my SL first name? Ask my parents. They chose it as my RL first name.

There were a couple of last names on the list that were close to my RL last name. I chose Howlett because it was Wolverine's name in X-Men.

I later found out that new last names were added only two days before I joined. That's probably the only reason I was able to get my real name. If I joined today I'd probably be stuck with a name like RobZOMGWTF1337.

I looked at the last names available at the time.

Trebuchet sounded interesting.
A bit more exotic than most of the others available - and the name of a font.

But then, a trebuchet is an ancient siege weapon
http://www.trebuchet.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trebuchet

It uses a sling.

And Sling is has echoes of my RL name.

LOL!
From the Wikipdia page:
"A trebuchet (pronounced /ˌtrɛbjəˈʃɛt/)[1] (sometimes spelled trebucket and pronounced ˌtrɛbəˈkɛt)"

Bucket??

ZOMG! I'm Mrs. Bucket!!!!
Keeping up appearances!

I always think of you as 'Kiss'. :)

Isabeau is a variation of my RL name. I think I chose Imako 'cause it rhymed. I found out later it meant 'child of the present', which suits me.

My alts,

Shhh because alts are suppose to be secret, Latte 'cause I love coffee.

Icee Delight was a play on words, as in 'I See The Light'. I thought I was being clever. I only realized after how bimbo it sounded. I have since learnt to embrace my inner bimboness.

Many years ago, several years before I came to SL, I created a roleplaying character named Ceera Darkwynde, in the RP forums at www.masterzdm.com (called the MZDM Forums by Players there). She was one of many characters I had there. Her name was actually an epethet, an adaptation of names she was called by her enemies in the RP. As a mage and a caster of nightmares, some of her enemies had referred to her as "The Searing Dark Wind", as her waves of nightmare burned through the minds of those she attacked. She started calling herself Ceera Darkwynde, and no longer used the name she was born with.

Over time the character mellowed, and became much less a nemisis and more a Goddes of dreams of all types, and of Vengence. She eventually became quite close to another RP character belonging to another Player. That chacacter was a Kitsune.

When the Player of the Kitsune character started playing more in SL than they did in the MZDM forums, Ceera followed her friend into SL. I wasn't able to choose a last name, and my friend's surname was already closed. So I took another Asian surname, to at least be the same nationality as my friend, and was able to keep Ceera as my given name in SL.

Ceera Murakami has mellowed further, and is now a Kitsune herself. She is best known as a creator and Builder in SL. While a few of my other RP characters from MZDM forums have come over to SL as alts, Ceera has solidly remained my primary Avatar here.

My alt's name is based upon the name of a main character in a novel I have been not really writing for many years.

What an incredible idea! I wonder if SL can be a writer's playground in that one can become the different characters to see how they would react in different situations.

Of course this could also be a great excuse not to write. "Hey, I'm researching." I originally got into FPS games (way back in the original Doom days) because I "couldn't afford 3D rendering software" as an illustrator's aid. Right. . .

[edit: It's still a cool idea though.]

I know a few writers who have done precisely that with some of their fictional characters from their stories - Made them into on-line RP characters who respond as much in-character as possible, and then RP with them in situations similar to whe they might write about.

That's a touching tale, Raymond... a really great way to remember your uncle. Wow, he knew Hemingway and Robert Frost!!
Thanks for reading that. You made my weekend!

Yummy, thanks to your thread. I googled my uncle and found out there's a research award in his honor. I never would have seen that if you didn't start this thread, so thanks a million!

Raymond Einhorn Research Award
AFGA has established the Raymond Einhorn Research Award to provide up to $25,000 in each of two annual awards to individuals or teams of researchers to support research that will advance knowledge, concepts, and tools of government financial management or accountability, governmental accounting, or auditing.

The Raymond Einhorn Research Award is named for a former Association of Government Accountants president and an early leader in government financial management. During his more than 30 years as a federal accountant, Mr. Einhorn was a pioneer in governmental auditing and fiscal responsibility. He set up the first internal auditing functions at three federal agencies, and wrote the GAO’s first guide to internal auditing of federal agencies.

Mine is simple. I choose the first name after my 3 year old boy and the last name ended up being picked after not finding ANYTHING I wanted and went with it. I don't hate it but wish I would have went with something else.

Damn....

without removing any letters I get "Bloradaro". Is that really cool or really awful?

really awful.

It doesn't get much better only removing one letter.

maybe .. Boradro?

When I saw the last name Lunasea, I grabbed onto that first and tried to find a first name which sounded good with it. Someone of course pointed out later it could also mean "lunacy" Oh well :) I prefer to think of it in a more romantic light. Elora, is a variation of my first real name Laurie. It's also the name of the baby in the movie Willow, which I love. Put them together and the alliteration of them sounded quite right. I love the name I picked.

My alt, Ladyfox Aluveau has nothing to do with being a sex pot! Foxes are totem animals to me. On the day of my mother's funeral, a fox ran across her grave. This, in New Jersey in an area where foxes are not common. Since then, I grabbed onto the fox as a symbol, and have used Ladyfox as a screen name in other places online. Aluveaux, well it sounded French and I liked the idea of her being a French born women of nobility of some sort. Someone in my family once ran a tree of our heritage and found out we have some French bloodlline somewhere so, there you go. Although she sure doesn't act like one ;) Glad I picked this name too, has a good ring to it.

Another alt, Sivyaleah Loire needes great explanation. Sivyaleah is my hebrew name. Given at birth, as all (or majority) of Jewish people have them. Sivyaleah is my main screen name everywhere online. Loire, is my name spelled anew - and just happened to be available as a last name in SL. I don't run her for any reason except to store money, shop and hide out when I need to have some quiet time. She hasn't really developed a personality yet. One day, she might but I haven't given her a chance yet. Love this name too, for obvious reasons.

I just realized all of them, seem to have emphasis on "L" sounds. Probably not a coincidence.

Smyth Morrisey was an alt I created for permissions testing, named after Morrissey, the lead vocalist of The Smiths. I never intended to use Smyth very often but I found that I soon was, sometimes more often than my main av. I was using Smiths lyrics in my group titles and my profile but I got tired of it after a while. I only chose the name as a joke but I decided that joke wasn't funny anymore.

Smyth didn't have much inventory and most of it was transferable, so I decided to abandon Smyth and create a new account...

Smyth always wore dark blue and orange so I thought Nightfire would make a good last name. I also wanted a unisex first name because of Smyth's frequent gender changes. I tried 40 or 50 first names that were not available with any last name, and another dozen or so that were not available with Nightfire. I gave up and decided I would just make up an alien-sounding name.

When I used to play arcade games that would allow you to enter your initials for a high score I would often use QAZ, two uncommon consonants with a common vowel. I figured that sounds somewhat alien and not particularly male or female. Kirax went better with that than any other available last name.

My new permission testing alt is Worf Merryman. In one episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Capt. Picard and his crew were dressed as Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Worf was not happy about this.

Edo because I like japanese design and nothing else appealed to me on the list that day.

I would have given it more thought if I had known how difficult it is to change it or move inventory around.

I think it's an interesting name every time I see it. It once crossed my mind that it was a language variant of Ruth

LOL amazing how many people think it means something, however I like your idea, being it is SL and I do get ruthed from time to time... just as long as people do not start saying they got Rhaorthed LOL

Rhaorth,
All this time I thought it was some ancient Welsh or Brittanic name.

I get that a lot... never thought of it when I made it

I write. Most of it never goes further than my hard drive, but I write. (So, apparently, do a lot of other SL residents - Writer is a popular SL name!)

And a few years ago, when I actually submitted some of my writing online, Nicole was the first half of my pseudonym. Partly because it sounded natural, not like the first half of a pseudonym, and partly because I didn't see a lot of other authors using it.

But Nicole Writer was taken, so I shortened it to Nic. I was lucky, too, as I joined somewhere near the beginning of the Great SL Name Stagnation. A few months later, and I'd have been lucky to get a "normal" first name at all!
