IMHO, 90% of what someone terms "rude" is more often a case of "reader applied a tone to the post that wasn't there."

That being said, these forums have about the same ratio of a**holes to nice people that RL does. There is no escaping them even in virtual life.

I totally agree....sometimes one can apply a certain tone to a post and totally misconstrue the meaning of it... if I may, I'd like to quote a line from a a song that kind of sums it all up really...for me anyway....

"opinions are like a**h**es and everybody's got one"

Anyone care to guess the name of the song.... think early 90's ......female duo.....

PS: Isablan, I just recently paid a visit to the SL Botannical Gardens....a wonderful build......

Grow Up.
i voted number 4 because up until now you have never said anything to piss me off.

(I am never like this and I am sorry. I just had to say something. It just pisses me off is all. This is a valuable place for a lot of people and the forum are my family so to speak. We may not all agree but lay off them please)

Wow, good thing you threw in the apology there. /sarcasm. That really negates all of the rude things you posted immediately before it. There are ways of responding to people's concerns without being as harsh as you were. Play nice.

Sounded like Claire had some sage advice. Wise beyond her years if you ask me.

Another time when maybe something was misunderstood. I didn't think Claire was harsh at all, and she's right....she never, ever posts anything mean. I also get upset when people keep posting about how "mean" everyone is. How the "clique" all gangs up on them, etc. I'm not referring to Penny specifically, but in general. I always thought I was rather overly sensitive, but I must wear armour compared to some of the people who read and post on these forums. I find that very little said on here offends me or upsets me. Some people make me laugh (and not always in a good way, either), some make me smile, some make me shake my head, and some I just skip over their posts because I already know that they tend to post basically the same thing in any thread they respond to and I really don't want to read the "yada, yada, yada" again. I like a good debate (especially when I know what I'm talking about and can join in), and sometimes these debates get heated. Sometimes they turn into arguments, I'll give you that one. But i want to emphasize the "Sometimes" in the preceding sentences. I also think that a lot of people overreact, or just get upset when they don't receive the response they're hoping for from other forum posters. Just because you didn't hear (or read, actually) what you wanted to hear, doesn't mean someone was "mean". It just means they disagree or see someone for the troll that they probably are (and no, before anyone throws accusations, I again am not referring to anyone specific as that "troll";).
I will say that every once in a while there is a particularly mean-spirited post, but most that get on my nerves are just because they're so freakin' ridiculous, and not so much because they're mean.

EDIT: This reminds me of an old saying "I've been called worse by better". That has been my response a lot of times when people in RL having something rude to say. Hell, compared to some of the people I have met in RL, most of the posters on these forums are downright gentle. No way should you let the forums get to you. If you are, it's time to take a break away from them. Go for a drive....that'll remind you of how much ruder people can be in RL than they are on here. (tailgaters, red-light runners, people who cut you off then give YOU the finger, etc.) After driving to work in the morning, the forums can be a real breath of fresh air.

If you think this forum is rude, you need to get out on the internet more often. This place is like preschool compared to most.

I answered that I don't know you...

and also that my answer wasn't listed....

just using this post as an example, maybe the best way to start a post isn't by accusing people of being nasty, or playing the victim? just a thought.

avoiding debate threads where people have strong opinions is probably not a bad idea either...

that said, do you REALLY care what people here think about you? just be you, quiet, loud, opinionated or otherwise...

it's not a competition, there are no prizes, and even the people that agree with you one day will disagree the next if they belive differently... the trick is not to personalize what people say on the net... you'll do fine =)

FFS! Use paragraph breaks next time. Does your computer not have a return key? Crap on a stick that's a big-ass paragraph! Shame on you!

/fake meaness off. I just can't flame others like I used to... ;)

Penny,

As most of the others are saying, the replies to you (the ones I've read, anyway) haven't been mean or rude. A lot of them HAVE disagreed with your positions, which is a different thing. When you post general questions about things like SL relationships, you really need to expect to see a lot of different, and often strongly held, opinions.

Actually, both your questions and the many responses are really outside the scope of this forum. Resident Answers is supposed to be where people can ask questions about stuff that doesn't fit in one of the more narrowly defined forums, and get Answers.

However, since we no longer have a General Discussion forum, a lot of the banter here is GD, not, strictly speaking, RA. And that's OK, IMO.

Since we lost our moderator, Strife, the level of GD has gone up considerably, and the hotly debated threads tend to run a lot longer than they used to. I don't like some of what I've seen, and I join Ray and Oryx and others in hoping that we soon get another mod like Strife to take us in hand and keep us in line (while allowing some slack for horseplay).

Anyway, all of that is just to give you some history, so that maybe you can have a better idea of what to expect here. Most of the regulars are very helpful and welcoming...but there are also a lot of strongly held beliefs, and you can expect to hear them expressed.

Claire...sweet, gentle, mild-mannered Claire...had some straight from the shoulder advice: Grow a thicker skin, grow up, get over it. In other words, jump on in here and swim with the sharks. It's exciting and stimulating...provided you can handle a little nip or two.

JC on a Pony! Your flaming is TERRIBLE. Troll can't even be your second language. Third? Fourth? Not at all? You need to get your lazy ass up to the keyboard, light a damn match and start to flame people better or you might as well go back to playing in the kiddie pool with the other wannabe trolls. You're probably Canadian because all I see from you is friendly, reasonable, and well spoken - no legitimate flaming or trolling skills at all. Pitiful.

Next time bring your A-game, rookie.

(See? That's how it's done.)

I'm sorry if my comments somehow offended you. People have a habit of ripping the forums and making it sound like its all bad. As soon as i had posted i was worried i might get a similar response. I declined to take it back becasue i think what i said was true. I wasn't talking to just penny though. I was refering to all of those people who really have a grudge against the forum. i meant what i said. noone is forcing anyone to be here. Yes it would be nice if we all got along peacefully but there are alway going to be clashes and so people have to deal with that.
I truly never speak like that and i apologise to penny and any others who are hurt by what i have said. I could have said it in a nicer way, sure. But i didn't. *shrugs* Sometimes I have to vent. I bottle things up far too much. This probably wasn't the optimum time for me to blow off some steam, but I couldn't help it.
And I am not taking it back. I'm stubborn like that.

Sorry. Actually, I love Canada. I've always thought we should colonize it. We don't have any more room for new stars on the flag, so we can't offer you statehood, and you'd be behind Puerto Rico and Guam in line anyway, but you would make lovely colonies. I think we could take you as a tax write-off. Plus, it might get easier for me to smuggle Cuban cigars across the border.

Not that I have EVER smuggled Cuban cigars across the border from Vancouver. EVER. The thought never crossed my mind. I promise. Those were all from some country with some sort of legitimate trade relations with the stupid US and its stupid policy on Cuba.

When someone tailgates me, I take my foot off the gas until they figure out how to either back off or go around. I do it because it not only gets them to stop tailgating me one way or another, but I know that it infuriates them to no end. Yet it isn't likely to cause an accident (that involves me, anyway). But mostly to infuriate them.

Crap. It's 75 and Sunni here in Cali.

I just noticed that it's hard to get a good flamewar going when your avatar is a hamster and you're bantering with people named Trout, Love and Sunni.
