Since some of the adfarm threads have run their course, I'm starting a new one with some good news: They've gone from warnings to suspensions. This is a great sign for those of us who hate horrible signs.

Date: Saturday, February 16, 2008
Violation: Community Standards: Harassment, Ad Farms
Region: Epilais
Description: Visual spam from ad farm.
Action taken: Suspended 7 days.

Without naming any names, was a big one that bit it for 7 days?

Dunno. Someone familiar with that sim will have to weigh in on that one. Or the person/persons who submitted the AR.

Not a main account
02-16-2008 17:05
Sadly not sure how much that will inconvenience that person as that account is 'no payment info on file' so I assume is most probably just an alt?

Look at UH's profile now. He asked a Linden for a price list to tell him how much he could sell his land for. He was told: " there isnt a list, it depends on what people will pay for it."

Well, that's if you believe what he posted.

If he was the one suspended, his profile wouldn't show up in search, right? So it must be someone else?

If it's an NPI, it can't own mainland or sell it.

Awwwww, he's confused by the policy. I feel for him. I can understand his confusion. Without some kind of list to go by, how on earth would he know the L$100,000 for 16m I saw earlier today is too high.

Poor baby.

A lot of people who's accounts are payment info on file show up as "no payment info on file" on their profiles

Something to do with it not updating correctly visibly for a few months after it was implemented.

Today in world I already saw a big sign that says "*******'s is a legitimate advertising business, not an ad-farmer."

So the gray area begins.

But I do believe the sign was not horribly ugly and was not on a little square of land for sale at L$10k per sq. meter. Advertising is not the target.

There is one of those up here in Ennin too, it says "M********** B***** not an ad farm", I built a woman's dorm facade to keep from having to look at the bloody spinning thing a long time ago... they are asking 77.7 a meter for the land, that does smell like extortion. Ad farm.. ad extortion, same thing, they are spoiling the view for four sims with that one totally out of place sign. It would be a lot more convincing as a legit ad biz if the land wasn't for sale at a way inflated price.

If you buy land from someone who is suspended, will the sale go through? In other words, does an ad farmer care if he gets suspended?

The sale will go through. They care because they can't log in to continue doing business.

Oh, the horror! If they get suspended and you buy their overpriced land, they have to wait until they're unsuspended to go in and buy more land to chop up!

Or they could just open an alt account using a different credit card and email address and continue what they were doing, knowing that they can get their cash out of the main account when they get back in.

It will go through, but during that time (however long the suspension) obviously they won't be able to do anything about the money they're making.

If it's a permaban... presumably they lose all their assets anyway, and wouldn't that mean all their land reverts to Gov ownership, and their stuff gets autoreturned to them eventually?

We can but hope ...

I have a suggestion against this 'grey area' problem that will arise now as there's a rule against ad-farming. LL should index a roof or maximum price per square meter for land. If it's indexed and follow the global economy inworld then I think it has a chance to be generally accepted and the grey zones will be fewer. This is excisting irl too and is usually called exorbitant price or exorbitant rent when land or an estate is for rent or sale at a ridiculously high price. What do you think about it? Would it become too much of a law like situation in SL? I'm not sure myself what I think, but this idea popped up in my head. Maybe there is a need to define what an unreasonable price is?

It is difficult to define what is an acceptable price to pay for virtual land because:

a) It's virtual AND only digitally exists while Second Life (and in some cases the private estate owner's islands) are up and viable.

b) Linden Labs can (and has) directly influence land prices via tier levels and land creation.

c) Its a free market. What is my absolute ideal may not be others folks dream.

But...having said all that I "own" land in a collection of Sims that are regarded (by and large) as premium desirable Sims. (Caledon group/partnership) In the right circumstances, I mighty get upwards of many times the price paid for prime mainland waterfront. However, land speculators are not wanted in Caledon and the island owners would withdraw service if it were attempted. Hence it is not done. But you rarely if ever see land for sale there; indeed there was/is may be a waiting list for the area.

On the mainland there is, in my own opinion, Sims where you would struggle to sell even if it was given away for free, plus tier. Unless you were able to buy the entire Sim and clear it out (slum clearances). Which does go on from time to time.

Just my own views folks
