From: Scylla Rhiadra Intentional self-parody, no. Unintentional? Sure, all the time in SL. Like that guy who sees you in the store . . . the one with the six-foot wide shoulders and wasp waist who IMs you with that sure-to-win opening line, "U R HOT"? Is it self parody if it's unintentional? Or darkly tragic? Lol.

From: Melita Magic Plaid shirt, dirty undies, smelly feet, bald patch with combover, and belches every two minutes. Who's with me?
That's pretty much what I had Argent David dressed in for a long while, well, except that he was a cat. Big old sloppy tomcat with chewed ears. You have any idea how hard it is to get a decent plaid shirt on SL? Avatar Mesh, I curse thee!

From: Scylla Rhiadra I wish it were that simple. But both men masquerading as women, and RL females do LOTS of other things in SL that reflect poorly on the gender. If you think looking and behaving like a Frankenbarbie hooker is bad, how about becoming a Gorean sex slave? Or consenting to rape RP, thereby broadcasting the message that women really get "turned on" by sexual violence?
I'd love to blame these all on men playing women. And an awful lot of them, I suspect, are. But it's not just men who need to be educated about the damaging stereotypes that our culture applies to women. This I totally agree with! It’s one of the few things I really find offensive about SL. It boggles my mind to think a woman would do these things.... haven’t they every had to walk out to their car in a dark, nearly disserted parking lot late at night, alone? I’ve always just assumed all the GOR slaves and rape RP’ers were men but perhaps your right. Personally I blame men for most of the damaging stereotypes presented of woman but I guess we do earn a few of them ourselves.

I think it's probably true to say that, ultimately, damaging stereotypes were IMPOSED by men. Historically, it has been men who controlled the media, and the loudest and most authoritative voices in our society. But co-opting women into buying these stereotypes has always been a strategic aim. Take a look at a woman's magazine from the 50s, for example. Teaching the victim to embrace her victimization has always been a strategy of tyranny, of whatever kind. Remember the Epsilons on Huxley's Brave New World? They LOVED being at the bottom of the social scale; how much freer were they than the Alphas, who had to think and carry onerous responsibilities!

From: Melita Magic Lol. Gave me an idea. For every crack ho-ish avatar run by a real life male, we should create an equally awful stereotype of a male avatar, run by a female.
Plaid shirt, dirty undies, smelly feet, bald patch with combover, and belches every two minutes. Who's with me? You might start a trend among the men - they'd see that avatar and say, "*That's* what I'm talking about! Where'd you get that avatar, dude?"

From: Imnotgoing Sideways Someone say plaid? =^-^= Hmm ... it looks like the pattern of the top does not quite match what was used for the skirt though? Maybe a solid reddish-rust for the top like the hair and a jet black (or brighter red) wig?

From: Smith Peel OK, but whether you are roleplaying your whole SL personality...Nevermind...Nobody would check that box anyway How do you roleplay a personality? That sounds too much like a job to me. I only do things for love or money. Assuming no one is being paid to manufacture an entire real life self, what would be the payoff in 'roleplaying a personality?' (If you mean fabricated real life details, no one should ask for those anyway, in my opinion.)

However, what they fantasize about or do safe in their own bedrooms* is sometimes another story. *Or mine

I don't think that it's always "mainly" screwing with people's heads. Some times I roleplay being very nice.

I think I might make a male alt and go around hitting on the other guys No, that would be mean and hurtful to the guys who are most certianly NOT running around as women and hitting on other women. How easy do you think it would be to fool everyone. I will need to get Emerald fixed so I could go on voice too! I bet I could do it.

From: Smith Peel True, but then they don't need any convincing one way or the other. Since they are not rational. This is too black-and-white a response. The world isn't divided into "rational" and "irrational" people: there is an enormously broad spectrum. And either way, we have to contend with those who WILL believe that women "want it" even when they are clear that they don't, whether it's through education or other means.
