I am a male in RL, but prefer to play a female avatar in SL. I do not hide this fact in game or make anybody think I'm a female in RL. It's also clear in my profile. There are still those people who talk to me and treat me like I'm a female and I have to inform them that I am not.
Anyways...
I want to know how many other guys are playing female avatars. How common is it? In my opinion, it is normal as long as they don't make people believe they are female IRL, especially when it comes to sexual activities.
On an RP sim, naturally I would act like a female since she is my character, but I still never hide the fact I am male IRL. I can't help but wonder though if that avatar that I find to be an attractive woman is really some other dude pretending to be a woman IRL.

The part I don't get is why guys who play females then have relationships with other female avatars (who may or may not be male RL). Is this part of that peculiar fascination guys have with lesbians?

Is this part of that peculiar fascination guys have with lesbians? Yeah, I've never got that either. Rumour has it (and I certainly DON'T know this for a fact) that most of the so-called lesbian sims are, in fact, crawling with men representing women.

I would wager that half the men in SL have a female av....and about 95% of those do NOT make note of it in their profile....pretty much defeats the whole purpose. Have Fun!

I remember an article in, I think, Wired, a few years ago, about two guys who both played lesbians, and "fell in love" with each other in SL, not knowing that their opposite number was, in fact, a man. The really interesting thing was that when the truth came out, it didn't make any difference. Although neither man was apparently gay, they quite happily stayed partnered with each other . . .

Maybe after the resident busybodies get child AV's banned, they can take this on.

There are still those people who talk to me and treat me like I'm a female and I have to inform them that I am not. Um... If you post in your profile that you're male in RL, and you apparently don't want people in-world to talk to you and treat you like you're a female... Why have a female avatar? I mean, why do you choose a female appearance, and then insist on NOT being treated like a female? From: Nocturnal Clarity Anyways...
A very large part of the "females" in SL are really male. Probably as many reasons for it as there are individuals. I've heard things like "If I have to stare at the butt of an avatar the entire time I am in-world, it may as well be a cute butt!", to roleplayers who are strictly "in-character" whenever logged in with that avatar, to closet gays, to... Personally, it doesn't bother me at all, as long as the person doesn't try to start a real-life relationship with someone, while disguising their actual gender. If they play a female realisticly in-world, talk and act like a female, I'll happily accept them as one, in-world. What they are in reality doesn't matter any more than it does if an actor from the USA plays a Scotsman in a movie. If he does it believably, why should I care that his normal self doesn't talk with a rich Scottish accent, but sounds more like he came from New York? If it is just a role they are playing, and accepted by both parties as no more than that, it's all just good fun. Those who participate in relationships that have any expectation of becoming real-life romances should be honest with their Partners, and let them know if gender, marital status, race, religion, politics, or anything else might be an issue.

From: Pserendipity Daniels We men have secret signals for that sort of thing. Pep (And it's just like having a golf partner. ) I don't know. I would never let my golf partner touch my putter. Although I might toss him a couple balls. /me ducks.

From: Scylla Rhiadra Yeah, I've never got that either. Rumour has it (and I certainly DON'T know this for a fact) that most of the so-called lesbian sims are, in fact, crawling with men representing women. It depends strongly upon which club you visit, but my suspicion, based upon my own experience, is that this is very much true. My avatar is a butch woman, and that sends certain signals that are only attractive to - and for the most part really only recognized by - lesbians, and that are (speaking in broad generalities) either ignored or thoroughly misinterpreted by men. So there are two kinds of reactions I get when I arrive at a nominally lesbian club in SL. In clubs filled mostly with balloon-breasted avatars in club wear and stiletto heels, I may as well be invisible. In clubs filled with a more diverse and representative range of women's appearances, I get a nice healthy share of attention. My own suspicion is that the avatars in the former clubs are mostly operated by men, who don't respond to the signals my avatar sends; and that the avatars in the latter clubs are mostly operated by lesbians, who do. Put another way, men-playing-lesbians on the whole have no interest in what a butch woman represents, whereas at least some women who actually are lesbians recognize and respond to the archetype of a butch woman.
