What's next, "linden-verified gender-honest avatar"?

Actually, when the first blog post was done on what is now age verification it was then called identity verification. One of the things listed was gender and that lead to all sorts of negative reactions, including from the transgender community where IDs may not match identifications.

I agree... There should be some kind of checkbox for Real People vs. Roleplayers on our profiles.

I can see why men would want to be females... ahh in SL and RL.
For about 24 days out of the month, absolutely.

I'm RL straight male and my main avatar is female . I'll call her A.
A. is sort of an intellectual bimbo and a greedy courtesan. I know many will find that morally questionable and/or malicious, of course.
I agree with a lot of things that have been said in this thread, and I definitely can relate to that female butt-ogling thingy. But over all, it's just great to act femininely, to let out the woman in me. I rarely use this one male identity because I'm just bored being a guy on SL. On the other hand, being A., that unrepentant seductress, is exhilarating, lots of adrenaline.
I don't see A. as a representation or an extension of myself. Sometimes it feels like she's an independent being of her own right. I can't really recognize myself in her. Isn't that the whole point of SL after all?

Thanks for giving real women a bad name. :/

Seriously, this is the only thing I hold against opposite gender players. Do they HAVE to play into the very worst picture other people hold regarding that gender?*

Also if you are straight and playing a female courtesan/seductress - sorry but there is more to this story.

*Not the seductress part. The "greedy bimbo" part.

Immy is my me that's more "me" than I can possibly be in RL. Nobody knows that I'm actually a cat slapping away at a wind-up mouse on the keyboard. =^-^=

QFT
We were hanging out at a hair shop yesterday for a little avatar watching, mainly (all comment made over IM, of course)

It's utterly amazing how some people (in my opinion, likely those "straight" males that converge upon hair salons in SL) portray what they think is a sexy woman. Several of the avvies I saw should probably have been shipped off to Zindra.
The display ranged from utterly laughable to somewhat disturbing. Do they not know that doing the Frankebarbie thing to such extreme is like holding up a sign saying : "Guy playing female over here!"
(I'm only saying that because I really don't want to believe that an RL female would volunteer to dress like a Mad Magazine caricature of a hooker)

I'm neither a prude nor a militant feminist, but do those folks actually believe that such outfits are attractive (to whatever they're trying to attract), or are they simply doing this as a joke?

My experience has been that it may only be once a month, but it lasts 28 days.

Fixed it for ya.

We are all very different. But perhaps the soul sisters unite with a common bond.....in your case.

Lol. Gave me an idea. For every crack ho-ish avatar run by a real life male, we should create an equally awful stereotype of a male avatar, run by a female.

Plaid shirt, dirty undies, smelly feet, bald patch with combover, and belches every two minutes. Who's with me?

See, now that’s the problem. Every male should experience “that time of month” and child birthing first hand to get the full appreciation of the experience. ;)

I wish it were that simple. But both men masquerading as women, and RL females do LOTS of other things in SL that reflect poorly on the gender. If you think looking and behaving like a Frankenbarbie hooker is bad, how about becoming a Gorean sex slave? Or consenting to rape RP, thereby broadcasting the message that women really get "turned on" by sexual violence?

I'd love to blame these all on men playing women. And an awful lot of them, I suspect, are. But it's not just men who need to be educated about the damaging stereotypes that our culture applies to women.

Not necessary. Self-parody is rampant in SL. :D

*SHUDDER*

Love the idea but it would take some MAJOR rewiring of my brain to use that as an avatar.

With the dirt where it meets the scalp, and broken clasp? Good point.

Scylla - I see precious little self parody in first or Second Life. Unfortunately.

Intentional self-parody, no. Unintentional? Sure, all the time in SL. Like that guy who sees you in the store . . . the one with the six-foot wide shoulders and wasp waist who IMs you with that sure-to-win opening line, "U R HOT"?
