Returning to the subject of the OP, I'd like to put a different perspective. I don't think casual sex is the danger, it's the romantic love that is going to get you messed up.
It's dangerously easy to turn another resident into the partner of your dreams - they look perfect, there are gorgeous places to explore with them, you never see their flaws and you only have to deal with them when you fancy it. What I always say, and have learnt from early mistakes in SL, is that you only have one heart, and you simply can't compartmentalise SL love from RL love. As you give more in SL to your fantasy partner, you are compromising your love for your RL partner, who is the one, if you are married, you made your vows to, and should be honouring. I'd put casual sex in SL on a similar level to looking at porn on the internet, which of course, many would have problems with. I regularly participate in either roleplay or completely open discussions about sex with female friends in SL, and love doing it. I find out more about myself, and what women really want, and have become a much better RL lover through what I've learnt here. But the terms are explicit and upfront, it is purely for fun, no love, no relationship, no RL contact, ever. SL is an extraordinary environment for exploring yourself. Anonymous if you want it to be, totally risk free, both medically and personal safety, and you can leave at any moment at the touch of a button. Personally I've been monogamous all my life, would never dream of being unfaithful in RL, but I have no problem exploring my sexuality in a totally anonymous, no strings attached role play in SL. My sex drive is much higher than my wife's, and SL gives me a safe arena to play that out. Actually, I think SL sex is probably more constructive than looking at porn, as it makes you think and interact, whereas porn just sets up unrealistic fantasies and does nothing to improve what you can offer your RL partner. What I can't stand is the hypocrisy of anyone who condemns casual sex here, often because of basic prudish beliefs, but happily supports their friends getting partnered and even making vows to each other, in betrayal of their RL spouse. That is the truly destructive activity that I'd liked to see condemned more often; but it's cute, and has nice music and pretty dresses, so it can't be that bad, can it...? |
