To the OP:
This is my own experience.
Maybe 2 weeks from joining SL my wife became fond friends with another av and wanted it to go further.
She didn't want to "leave me behind", (probably to make herself feel better) so she set me up into a "Special" and close friendship with one of her SL friends.
Well the av she was after didn't work out, so she became the 3rd wheel, and didn't really want to persue anything else.
She ended up hurt a few times because of it, so I ended the "Special" friendship. While her friend doesn't admit, and knew what was going all the time- I know she also got hurt. She's seldom on the grid anymore - and cites RL for the reason. (Which may be, I don't know).
That experience led to more misunderstandings and hurt.
Me? I've been so (Justifiably) beat up about it that I've almost lost all my social energy in SL. We both used to have so much fun flirting, making new friends etc. Today I log in because my wife wants me there, and to tend to our businesses. Her? She's much the same as me.
So what may seem like a wonderful arrangement at first might end up with something not inteded. My wife and I have a wonderful RL relationship, soul mates really- and perhaps a less solid foundation might have been shaken with the same experience.
