From listening to the audio of all the brown bag meetings (yes, all 5.5 hours, I was bored) there seems to be a change of language when compared to the old "Keeping SL Safe" blog post. Things that were frowned upon by the lab at the time seem to be exactly what they're intending to move to the (Adult) continent. (^_^)

Terms like "Broadly Offensive" and "Extreme violence" were used as persistent keywords in regards to what content will need to be located in Adult sims. They haven't budged on the Kid AV rules, but, they also said that Kid AVs won't be restricted from entering (Adult) land as long as they adhere to the current proximity requirements. So, (Sexual)Ageplay is still on the books as a no-no. (=_=)

Right now, nobody ~KNOWS~ anything about the (Adult) region rules. The best we can do is interpret the mixed messages we're getting to the best of our abilities and hope that the vigilante AR-trolls shut their traps. (=_=)y

No it isn't. It's different when you begin to really go rob a bank or poison an entire city.

When such an idea leaps out of your mind in SL roleplay, it's no different from a Batman cartoon.

i agree.. if not .. then we gotto start thinking about the RL morals of all SL's tasty strippers and escorts.

you cant draw the line when it comes to ppls moral well-being.. :D

Seriously though, I find rape distasteful.. but if 2 consenting adults want to bang it up on the poseballs.. then that is their choice.

Not really. Linden Lab owns the Second Life grid so they can make whatever rules they like about what we can and can't do here.

To be honest I don't know their ruling on it... I assumed it was consensual adults can do as they wish and no minors around sex.

What was the question?
05-14-2009 08:44
@OP: I'm a bit confused as to your question and your motivation - it lacks a context. Do you mean what's their attitude now, or what WILL it be once the Adult Content stuff is enacted? If you can give us a little more context of why you are asking, it might be easier to answer without wandering off into the usual speculations about LL's future and whether it's right or wrong....

Clearly such content should not be allowed anywhere in SL.

Not really. Linden Lab owns the Second Life grid so they can make whatever rules they like about what we can and can't do here.
There is also the question of RL laws. In some countries, including my own, Britain, the depiction of extreme sexual violence, whether real or simulated, is now illegal.

They will only stop it if they decide to filter and screen private IMs.

And some laws deserve to be broken.

Sometimes I wonder if prevailing social norms are kinda tied in with big picture stuff like the economy.

Hemlines are a famous indicator; when the economy is bad society tends to cover up more.

Dear God, are we gonna go through THIS again? LOL, seriously folks. Where does the line get crossed between protection and Naziism (Yeah, I just made that word up).

*whips off her pants and waves them in salute*

Seriously, though, I watched CSI, Harper's Island, and Southland this week; they all had extreme violence/murder/etc. Harper's Island had a good scene involving ropes and duct tape (yum!) (the scene, not the duct tape). That sort of stuff is on TV EVERY DAY. Sigh.

SL rape in RL

This post includes a transcript of a Second Life rape enacted in Real Life.
It contains graphic imagery, strong language and pulls no punches.

Terrified victim shrinks back against the wall, her eyes on the knife on his hand.
Terrified victim: No! Please!

Rapist: Okay bitch, now I'm gonna t........

Terrified victim's computer: ding-ding

Terrified victim: ((Sorry. I'm getting IM's in SL. BRB))

Rapist: ((OK. SL takes priority. NP ))

Terrified victim: (( Oh . Really sorry. A friend in SL is having major drama ))

Rapist: (( Yeah. It happens a lot in SL. Will I come back in a while?))

Terrified victim: ((It sounds bad. Her BF has messed up the scripts in her sexbed, but he's trying to blame the maker and get her to demand a refund. This could take a bit))

Rapist: ((OK. Maybe another day. Thanks for the time :) I'll go back out the window so I won't track mud over your carpet. I've left $20 for the broken lock. ))

Terrified victim:(( Sorry again. Maybe you could try that apartment building at the end of the street. There are a few vulnerable lone females living there. ))

Rapist: (( Great! See you! ))

It is, though. I've seen an animation of a scene in which one avatar roughly slaps around another, forcing her (or him) to have oral sex.

Grossed me out.

Some women go crazy over being manhandled and having their hair pulled. Not to say, there is no room for tender love making, but mixing in some freaky-deaky keeps things interesting for some. To each their own. ;)

You know what Durkheim said about the usual constituents of social norms: "they're in us, not of us". It's my opinion that the virtual experience presents us with the opportunity to test common norms against personal bugbears. It's all good stuff and very much part of the respite from RL that SL has to offer us.

I can't remember who originally posted it, but, I remember someone saying that this stuff all turns into "My kink is fine, but yours crosses the line." back and forth finger pointing. (=_=)y

Clearly such content should not be allowed anywhere in SL.

Clearly you feel that anything outside YOUR personal tastes shouldn't be allowed in SL...
I wholeheartedly disagree, and challenge the notion that such content should be banned based on personal opinion. I've seen you at places with illegal and questionable theme. It's not a salad bar where you get to hand pick what content you like, and ban the rest..
Live and let live as long as nobody's being harmed.

EDIT: You're right Immy, that quote is what it amounts to, and it's completely hypocritical.

You can still use it in (Mature) land, as long as it's enclosed in a private residence and not listed as a service in search. (^_^)y

i don't remember rape role play being banned..
I remember something about RL images of things like snuff and rape and bestiality or anything violent being banned and having to be taken out of the search and off the walls..It;s been awhile so i don't remember what all it was...maybe i missed something since then..

It wouldn't be the first time i missed a blog post of rule changes..

The Garden of Love
05-14-2009 11:22
I went to the Garden of Love,
And saw what I never had seen:
A Chapel was built in the midst,
Where I used to play on the green.

And the gates of this Chapel were shut,
And "Thou shalt not" writ over the door;
So I turn'd to the Garden of Love,
That so many sweet flowers bore,

And I saw it was filled with graves,
And tomb-stones where flowers should be:
And Priests in black gowns, were walking their rounds,
And binding with briars, my joys & desires.

Good article, thanks for linking, Des. I have to disagree with one point in it, though:
From: someone
The correlation isn’t perfect. The song Mr. Pettijohn’s raters called most meaningless, “Macarena,” was a hit in a relatively bad year.
'Macarena' was a hit because it had a silly accompanying dance that, together with a bit of cheap booze and some good friends, had a lot of people stumbling around and laughing. In a bad year, laughter is even more vital.
