I was actually going to stay out of this thread as no one really listens to me. Yet, I know Chip will read this reply.

While brilliant in your summation and to be honest an insightful perception of what Linden Lab is trying to accomplish with the changes there are a few points devastatingly overlooked.

Was this a situation where all the older members were the ones that had super high ratings and were monopolizing the currency flow? If so, I would agree totally with your previous statement.

However that not being the case the system being unequivocally broken,
this particular change is not a slap in the face of the “Feted Inner Core” as many call old timers.
But actually a slap in the face for all the new members that have been struggling to survive in the face of “Rate Whores”.

Let me give some difinitive descriptions of the societal groupings we currently have.


“Old Members”
Why is this well to be honest most old members have figured out ways in which they need to survive. Many were accustomed to the 3500 Lindens a week back when taxation was in force thus they either became creative developers or they decided to reside on their own parcels via their tier.
Many of which learned to adapt in their own ways were not dependent on the “Stipend” as those like me saw it as a welfare of sorts and knew it would be changed eventually. So that particular group of SL’ers expected this and did not worry about it.


“Overly Inflated Ego Members” AKA Rate Whores
Then you have phase two: "the era of the rate whores" (this crowd carries forward to present) especially with there self-aggrandizing, I’m better than every fucking body and LL kisses my ass for it attitude.
Those are the ones suffering the big hit of the Stipend being cut in half.
Why because they struggled so hard to prove to the world they were the latest and greatest since sliced bread.
Needless to say to relate to your statement yes this was an ego deflator for them.
Now their ratings are dropping off like flies and they are loosing money left and right and are quite simply no longer able to afford their grandiose life style.
From this pool of people you will start seeing significant drops in tier.
Multitudes of posts that they are leaving because of “THIS Change”
You know what’s so ironically funny about this particular crowd. They are the ones that force feed the first crowd things like GOM and IGE and making RL Money in SL. This is the very same crowd that did a boom on buying individual Sims and building 400,000 clubs etc. But now they are the hardest hit because of their inflated egos and short sense of business perception.

“Midyears or Mid Life Members”
Now you have the Mid range players. Somewhat similar to the First group but totally opposite of the second. The Midyears were smart they took the advice of the old members things such as don’t over spend only buy and build on what you need and if you don’t need it don’t get it. They built quietly; they scripted quietly and slowly joined Group one as a formidable force in the content creation department. They sat back and looked and waited and low and behold they are not as severely struck by this problem as group 2 because they were not out Rate Whoring or depending on Rates to sustain their lively hood. Thus they are slightly miffed but still feel that they system change still was not appropriate enough to quell the egos of the second group.

And Lastly,

“Newnies-New Members”
These poor children have gotten hit the hardest from 9 directions. Why because one they are paying for mistakes the “Older Members” made. They are paying dearly for the mistakes the “Rate Whores” have made. They were hit even harder as they really didn’t have anything to start with. So half of nothing is nothing. Yet the “Rate whores” with their extremely High rates in categories that they have no fucking clue about are going to stand out even more. Because, the rate whores are now the only ones that will be able to afford to shop week to week. While the new members are going to have to rely on hand outs from the Rate Whores and older members and Midyears.

In essence LL has created a Republican Utopia of the Rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Granted in 6 months this will all change again but the primary issue is by the mere aspect of this change they are still rewarding Rate Whores by saying "ok now’s your chance to rule the world." I simply ask the mediocre question why didn’t they just zero all the rates put everyone on an even playing field and then let the 6-month clock begin?

Anyway again Chip I have a great respect for you and always will. Your theory while “oh so true” in a vacuum tube society still cannot truly be applied to SL. As it was the system that was broke not the people.

Today i took my english dictionnary to check a word, the word Whore, it seems it s the same meaning as Bitch, well, anyway, not very gentle word. So to say, some people would be aloud to treat others Whores, and still be nice fluffy and respectful, while me, saying Shit Licker, i am a real Monster of irrespect. I am a midbee guy, i arrived in SL 8 month ago, and i didnt care about any other rating than the builders one where after these 8 months i had reached the SECOND place which was good and i was PROUD OF IT. I don't have much to say about ratings, since I believe them to be broken and outdated, but I do understand your underlying points. I've seen your stuff, you have your own style, and I think you build well. The entirety of SL is not full of things like this, there are a few builders that have the skill/time/dedication/whatever to pay attention to seams and other aspects of a build.

It used to dishearten me greatly to see non-aesthetically pleasing builds near me. I realize everyone is some kind of unique plywood-snowflake (my joke, I don't like the default prim texture), but at the same time I felt that if they had just applied themselves a *little* bit, then there would be, at least, no overlapping 'flashing' or 'z-flutter' as I call it, not to mention other things that annoy me.

Now, I keep to myself, fly around sometimes, but honestly -- in my opinion only, you understand, I don't see a lot that I'd be willing to landmark, or comment on favorably.

I think this is part of what is bothering you. I will say, I did have my own rant-ish post, way back when we had the 'RANT' forums, and I basically said a few things about how would you like if I did builds all plywood, and all that, but ultimately.....if you are happy with what *you* do, then just stick to that.

You can't change all of SL, no matter how tempting it would be, I guess, so just focus on prettying-up your areas, and other things you come into contact with. Its really the only way to get past some of the more horrific builds I've come across. Don't let it get to you, its too easy to lose your cool over something like that.

I have been thinking about these changes and have been pretty careful to avoid posting in some of the threads that deal with economics. I really don't know a whole lot about economics but understand some of the basic principles.

I am taking a guess at what is going to happen in the future (precisely about 5 months from now)

A month ago rates increased from 1 to 25. This means significantly less ratings.

In 5 months all the L$1 ratings will have completely dropped off.

Clubs will have had a full 6 months to either adjust / adapt to the changes in event support. It is a guess that many of the smaller clubs will have failed by then and the events will naturally migrate to where the money is (educational events), thereby decreasing Dwell for the clubs. The clubs that are around will have done one of the following suggestions that I have seen on the forums.
1. Charge a cover charge.
2. Gained an SL business sponser for advertising.
3. The club will change ownership to be a part of a larger business system.

What I am guessing will occur is a sharp decrease in sales for clothing / skins / animations in 5 months as a result.

How do I justify this assertion?
I am making an assumption and saying that the club going crowd buys a lot of the dance animations, clothing, skins, hair, etc... The reason I am making this assumption is as follows:
The older players already have skins, clothing, hair, etc... that they are happy with.
The club goers are mostly relatively new players who don't and they want these items.
With the changes that will occur in 5 months, they will no longer have the half the stipend bonus that they did have because their rates have vanished and will not be replaced at the cost of 25L / rate. So new players (club goers and Non-club goers) simply won't have the 2k-5k for that new skin, or the 300 or 400 for that new outfit.

Since there will be fewer clubs around and most of the clubs will either be a cover charge or have some hand in advertising most of your players that enjoyed the social aspects of clubbing will either adapt or leave.

1. They will find something social other than clubs to do.
2. Hang out in the few clubs that are left.
3. Start creating content that will have a limited market because only the established players will have the money to afford the new products.
4. Leave SL.

Now, I understand a lot of people in SL could care less whether clubs dissappear forever from SL, thats been made plain. However, what I am more concerned about is the economic impact of these changes 5 months from now.

The sum result of these is:
1. Players who are not content creators will have less money (as rates reward content now)
2. The customer base (consumers) will be decreased because the primary consumers (Those that buy everything and make nothing or very little) will be decreased because they do not have the money and their favorite activity has had a large strain put on it.
3. New players who are not content creators and who do use SL for its social aspects will either find something else to do, or leave SL entirely in search of something a little more social.

Like I said, this is all just a guess at what is going to happen in 5 months when the L$1 Rates have fallen off.

I have to disagree a bit. I think people just starting will accept the world for what it is because to them it will be the norm. They'll be a lot more likely to accept and be comfortable with the idea that they'll probably need to purchase some L$ on GOM in order to have all the things they want and they'll be less likely to expect there to be artificial game mechanics that dispense L$ into their accounts.

If I go bowling I know I can get a ball provided to me but it won't be a really cool one or custom tailored to fit my hand. I know I can get shoes provided to me but they might be a bit ratty and not fit very well, but they'll be good enough for my purposes. If I'm really into bowling I can go out to a sporting goods store and buy my own ball and shoes. I wouldn't expect the bowling alley to have some sort of contest where I can win or earn a ball and shoes, or a button on the scoring console that dispenses money into my wallet if I sit there and push it. SL isn't much different from that. I'm comfortable with what the bowling alley provides and my options if I want more than that. Why shouldn't I also be comfortable with SL the way it is? There's nothing wrong with SL. There is something wrong with people's expectations of it. That's likely to change over time, especially with newer players who will be less likely to have expectations created by the old stipend and ratings system.
