Welcome back Jellin! Hell breaking loose? My analogy is as follows:Think of a table with a box in it. In the box there are ping-pong (aka "table tennis" balls. Now, you take some of the balls, and dropping them from your hand, they don't exhibit the properties you are familiar with: some of them bounce upwards, higher and higher with a greater sense of kinetic energy, others melt into the table and turn into liquidy silver pools, and yet others transmog their colors and cycle through all the hues of vermilion alabaster (sequentially, but nonetheless they cycle). You're looking at this, confused. Some sort of sensory overload extending outward beyond the balls into you, gripping into your core, leaving you numb and saying: "WTH IS GOING ON HERE?!? THE BALLS DIDN'T EXPECT LIKE I EXPECTED THEM TO! ARGHHH!" You drop some more balls, only to notice that some of the time, they will bounce like you're familiar with, but the weirdness continues. You then try to hurl some balls against the walls and floors, seeing if that will do anything differently. It's a strange feeling, all of these ping-pong balls "not behaving as they should". But the more you throw them, the more you get used to it... the shock fades, lessens over the next hour as you keep throwing the balls, one after another... starting to acclimate to the surreal nature of throwing balls. ALL OF A SUDDEN, IT HITS YOU: THE BOX IS STILL FULL OF BALLS. And that's when you:
a) freak out and go unspeakably insane
b) keep on throwing them no matter what
c) [fill in your own answer] ^that's REALLY what I think of SL ratings.

How can it be, O cruel world, that the Great and Mighty Yadni be ranked only ninth! O woe, the Sun will not rise in the morning, for it would be shamed to cast its light upon and clearly illuminate such ignominy! We mortals shall perish! Yes, perish I say, cursing the name Linden, which is like ashes and offal in our dying mouths. O Yadni, thou Great and Mighty, well we understand how ye be unable to bear this grievous stain on your honor. I recommend seppuku.

It is interesting that when the first rating changes went through many people posting were supportive of them as they were seen to affect the younger players more. Now ancient ratings are being wiped from older players all hell has broken lose.
There does seem to be a belief in some quarters that all new players, or players newer than them, are somehow clubbing parasites who only want money and rate everything that moves. Of course some older players have admitted to rating everything that moved in the welcome area.
The reason why some of you have gone down to single digit rates may be because you haven't actually interacted with anyone in the last 6 months?
The undercurrent seems to be that some older players believe that newer players are less worthy, less creative, generally less useful than themselves. This opinion is apparently formed without going near any in some cases.
It must be interesting to live in a community that goes from being tiny to what SL is today. What is also interesting is that we get tirades against immigrants in real life as well. Cutting the welfare/benefits of the "others" is also remarkably popular.

hmmmm Roberta, I don't really see what you see I guess. While losing a lot of ratings stings abit, and lots of us older players have commented on it, the majority still seem to be in favor of the changes (myself included). I'm not sure I see the point of complaining about generalizations made about newer players by making generalizations about older ones.

thank you, i studied and worked for just months and finally got this thing down pat. i stand there and can make a plywood box as good as anyone i have seen. recently i have learned that i can do it while sitting down to, makes it easier and thanks for that tip kris.
i have considered giving classes on the creation of plywood boxes out of thin air. i have seen that a couple other people do know how to do this, but i am sure it would make for a good event as many i observe dont do it in my presence. or is it naughty?? (fluffs her hair and smiles sappily)
anyhoooo... this new ratings thingy is not all bad cuz..... i am finally in the top ten. yay me. and bow down to me all u peons. hmmm in sl, should it be called avons??
thus sayeth:

HAHAH ROFL, at least you are making me smile, thanks a lot, Kim =D btw, i was kinda proud to arrive slowly at the top of building rankings, that WAS one of my pleasures to see my name here, i am then now pissed off and i have the guts to say it as loud and clear as i can with my limited skills in english, but if it was in french, it would be a lot worse i swear, when i m unhappy, i am NOTHING else, i am a passionnated guy, i build with passion, i play sl with passion, and i SHOUT with passion too, and i am NOT sorry if that bothers a few of you here, i am not wanting to please you when i shout, i just want to shout, and i do it. Sorry for you if you dont when u want to, i m not that kind, when it comes to tell what i personnally think, you can count on me. And also my opinion only involves me, but i think it can be as true as others opinions, so, if i feel bad about something, i have the right to say it in the forums, as a forum is THE place to do so. that s all. i ll go back to what i prefer now, and leave the rest behind, building.

From: Chip Midnight I'm not sure I see the point of complaining about generalizations made about newer players by making generalizations about older ones. Extremely well said, Chip. I have been supportive of both changes, and my ratings were barely halved - not bad for 2 years of ratings I suppose. I have never been someone to blindly give out ratings - I take the time to rate people when I am flying around, or I see an interesting avatar, or just because I feel like pointing out that I like someone. I have found people tend to do the same with me. All of these generalizations against new players/old players, which we can trace back to and completely blame on Prokofy Neva, is just silly. Do certain groups view other groups with some scorn? Yeah, hello, welcome to life, version 2. Rich vs poor, haves vs have nots, furry vs bald, d/s vs ac/dc. It has less to do with age of player and just about individual differences. There are certain aspects of SL society I find distasteful - I found the same elements distatesful two years ago in SL as I do now. For fucks sake, the old vs new thing is quite tired, quit beating a lame, dead, imaginary horse.

Why thank you sir One thing that didn't really dawn on me until today (and which I think is kinda cool) is that this change actually does a lot to help newer people. Since the bonus money is paid out of a pool, having all of us who've been accumulating ratings for two years cut back down to size means that everyone else is going to get a larger slice of the bonus pie which should help ease a little of the pain of having the bonus money halved.
