Just as I've committed to Snapzilla for photographic retrieval and excellence, so shall I do with Flapzilla.

To provide a little context about the Escapist story - Mark Wallace is a member of Second Life and has his own contacts in-world. While he did mention he was doing a story for the Escapist, he did not mention what it was about or who he would be writing about.

However, I do hear your frustration about the images on the homepage and the use of some of the same people in the press stories.

Regarding the homepage -- unfortunately, it is not a top priority at this time to change the images. As you may know, we are understaffed in the web dev department and have 20 or more high priority projects in the queue. Fortunately, one of those projects is to develop a content management system that should allow us to change text and possibly images.

Regarding press -- with over 40,000 Residents, it's not as easy as it used to keep up on all the interesting content and Residents that are appearing. I rely on liaisons, co-workers and my own in-world explorations to keep me up to date. If you look at my Second Life profile, I even ask that Residents email me to tell me about cool things happening in-world.

If you have a story to tell, though, I want to hear it. We are always looking for stories about people who have started businesses (sorry, this is what the press is currently interested in) and who are using SL in interesting ways. It helps if you've got a website so the reporter doesn't have to run around SL.

When I find a subject for a story, I always speak with them first to talk about the story and what the angle is. Another qualification is that you have to be enthusiastic and articulate about your experience in Second Life.

In the past I have put out calls for users in certain locales or who are doing certain things and gotten very little feedback. So, I'm open to all your ideas about how to better represent the community in the press.

Please feel free to email me at catherine@lindenlab.com with your stories and your thoughts.

Things I'd like to know:

Your Second Life name
Contact information - email and phone is ideal
How long you've been in SL
What part of the (real) world you're from
What you do in SL
Why you think your story rocks
Would you be interested in revealing real life information about yourself (sometimes reporters want that)
Any other information that will help me understand what you bring to SL
URL

Thanks for your help,
Catherine

So you're telling us that he did it because of the people featured on the website? I highly doubt it.

If that isn't what you are telling us, then I think it's fair to assume that you simply highjacked the thread to crow about one of your pet peeves again.

Amazingly, there is actually a third possibility. That I am not saying this person in specific did this because of the people featured on the website. I am saying the entire gestalt of the thing is like that, and the reason only a few people end up repetitively in coverage is they are the only ones featured on the website.

How did I hijack this thread anyhow?

Did I bring this up?

READ THE THREAD.

I brought up about the sexism of the article. I spoke to this aspect only after others did. Others, who, I suppose, are crowing about their own pet peeves. Amazing, that.

Very good to know. So much for lazy journalists who don't know much about SL skimming SL.com and using the first person they found. And so much for the Lindens feeding Aimee to the journalists. Any other feeble explanations beyond Aimee's coolness that I missed here?

Let me know.

Seconded. This should be a post stickied in 'general' for the most exposure and you may consider popping a link on the homepage somewhere for folks to submit these kinds of leads.

There is a large number of people here who want you to believe it is RIGHT that everything in SL be a closed club, admittance to only a few. It isn't. And it's not in any way good for SL or its success in the long run, either.coco

Can you say HIJACK?

Thank you, Catherine.

I agree, this should be stuck up and stickied somewhere.

And I hope we could nominate others if we wanted to, right? That way, you could end up with a whole list to offer any reporters. I know people I think would be interesting stories; they just aren't me.

I think its just in this thread though, Lindens :) I'd bug-report it, but it isn't happening to me.

I guess, Weedy, if I express myself and my own thoughts on any subject

you would consider it hijacking.

I have no idea what you are talking about now. All I know is it is one "you" sentence after another.

Maybe you two could take your discussion private since it doesn't seem to involve anyone else, or the thread topic. We've seen enough threads gets shut down from people picking at each other.

Just a friendly suggestion, feel free to ignore it at will.

I have "READ THE THREAD." Not a very effective tactic there Coco.

You participated in the highjacking, and then complained loudest, and most often. It doesn't matter who originated it. Besides, the one who originated it is on ignore. There are countless past examples which highlight your penchant to make pointed and unprovable claims on this matter. Being that you have consistently been the most vocal in issuing this type of conjecture, I addressed you. If you don't like that, all I can say is that I have every right to address you when you post. If that bothers you, tough.

It's one thing to complain about sexism, as that falls in line with the originating post - you are critiquing the subject matter in that post. However, claiming that authors choose to write about it because of website pics is not only unprovable and tangental, it's assumptive to the point of arrogance.

I am going to need more proof than your, "I am a journalist, so I know" rhetoric. What precedents do you have to back this up? How may other niche virtual communities in which the subscribers provide the content, and have participants writing articles about other participants have you been privy to? Where do you get this insider information?

Simply assuming you know the motivations behind this, and then repeating that over and over isn't going to make it true. Until the day I see quotes from the authors of these articles, all your huffing and puffing will remain exactly that, in my mind. Baseless accusations.

I don't know if I read Catherine's repsonse properly, but I don't think LL offered the list to this reporter.

I would love do a story on you Coco and submit it some publications. Maybe this weekend, I could follow you around and get some ideas and take some screenshots.

This would be so much fun.
