SL resident Aimee Weber has a feature that touches on touching her panties. She's very excited about it. (I'm making a stab at saying this with a straight face.) Written by Mark Wallace, this is another article in the Escapist. The prose flows like buttah and the layout is gorgeous. However, I am assured by Aimee herself that the panties pictured therein are actually not hers. So whose are they?

Thanks to Uri at SL Herald for the pointer:

I suppose anything can happen in Second Life, so here's a discussion thread for Aimee... her panties... and "The Reality of Virtual Commerce"! (Love the line, "no sharding here".)

PANTY GOODNESS!

O Sensual, sorry, not sure what you mean by that? Can you please explain more? :)

What you mean by this?

Have you read the article? The loud title is a teasing device for the meat of the text, which is actually one of the most powerful and comprehensive documents I've seen pertaining to SL—or online world economies in general—in some time.

I'd like to understand your perspective on this better.

Aimee pointed #secondlife to this article earlier today, and after much guffawing, I had to read it. So, the panties angle was definitely effective.

Torley's right, it's a very interesting read on the idea of virtual property in general and touches on topics very important to many of the discussions we have here -- aside from the ones about Aimee's panties.

Definitely worth a read if you want to see an accurate depiction of SL for the masses, as well as a reasoned discussion on the challenges of virtual property and the acceptance of that concept by the masses. It's also a much more humorous look at SL than most of the media pieces on us, which seem to suffer from much dryness and stick-in-ass syndrome.

I really feel like I'm missing Sensual's point. In the absence of elaboration, I will instead pretend that I know what you mean. Obviously, it was a comment about journalistic integrity and the complete absence of same at the Second Life Herald. I whole-heartedly agree with you, Sensual!

Ditto. Once I realised it, I stopped writing for them, stopped reading them, and stopped caring about anything they might be parroting as 'news' this week.

No offense, Torley. I <3 Aimee and all, but sorry... no clickthrough to that slime-encrusted piece of a rag here.

Ohhh... no worries but the article I am referring to is at the Escapist, a different publication! I posted the link at the end of that post:

This is the link to the article ^_^
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/8/18

SL Herald just referenced it. Like, in a meta way. :)

Sorry for any confusion!

Ah, missed it. I tend to reflexively gag every time I see that URL. I didn't make it to the second one.

Thanks for pointing it out. :)

I don't know what he meant, but personally I am really tired of reading every article about SL having something about Aimee this Aimee that, and the propaganda machinary constanstly promoting this in the forums. Fine, ok, we understand she makes good panties, or whatever (not even the best in my opinion), but she is one of 1000s of great builders in SL. That's it.

I normally would not care about this, since I wrote once before for another article that I have great respect for Aimee or anyone who contributes to SL. But I really feel focusing one individual constantly (in almost every article) is at this point belittles the amazing efforts of many many others. I also feel this is being used (intentionally or unintentionally) as constant (free) advertisement for her.

This is the last time I will make a point on this, but as a citizen of SL, I like to raise my opinion on this issue.

Thanks for the kind words (well, thanks to those who gave them). Though I DO understand there is a great deal of controversy surrounding this particular article, and I would like to set the record straight...

Those are NOT my panties.

I was asked for my panties (freshly worn...I don't know what THAT was all about) but I didn't make the deadline so they substituded someone else's panties for the cover shot. But Whos panties are they?

The world may never know.

Aimee, can you post a scratch-and-sniff version? I'm not sure my monitor supports it, but I would like to try.

I would guess the entire topic addressed in the original article was apparently primarily of interest to men.

You'd be incorrect :) It's an excellent article about the market for virtual goods and perceptions about it. Very well written and worth reading, despite the questionable title!

Oh really? Guess I was mistaken then. Despite the women's panties theme presented throughout the article.

Wow I am actually going to weigh in on this topic sincerely, as opposed to picking a contrarian side.

I think the aritcles was interesting, but I am tired of hearing about how SL is a "real" economy and should be taken seriously. I mean Duh. People make money doing this, what ever you call the thing, we know its money maker. What doesn't get enough press is the the important issues. I mean mining SL for pop culture trends is HUGE. yet this is barely touched on in the press. I mean what is is about SL that makes us cutting edge culture?

I suppose the fact that we live in a world of whimsy means all doors are off, and style is not limited. I think its time the press stopped worhipping the economy, takes it as a fact, and starts focusing on what can be done with SL that is useful.

To me Aimee's panties aren't interesting because she can sell them, they are interesting because of a design ethos, a creative impulse, and a reflection of what Aimee feels empowers, beautifies ans sexifies herself and women in general. I want to see an article about aimee as an artist. I think its time the press realized that we pay money for this stuff (well I don't-Jake doesn't really wear underwear much less panties) because it is good, and that it is interesting to us for all the reasons we like fashion in real life.

When we play the game we don't say " wow isn't it nead that Shadown weaver made real dollars off me when I bought my corsair, or hornet?" Fuck no, we look at the hornet's sexy lines and say "god damn, that is a dangerous looking aircraft that I want fly more tha i ever wanted to fly a T.I.E fighter."

All this talk about "you can make money selling virtual stuff on the interst is last years news" For godsakes they kill each other in Korea and China over the stuff. I think for SL to move to the next step we need to get more press about how designers like Jonquille and Simone go about their desing process wand what influences them-in short we need to treat our SL artists like they were real artists.

Next time I'd like to see an article that is genuinely about Aimee Weber's panties and not have them be a tag line to get me to read another tedious article on economics.

These articles annoy me. There is a complete and total difference between someone taking their own real work creating something for SL and making money off of it and someone cheating in a game where it's not allowed and destroying the game for other people. SL requires real creativity. People make money from offering real IP creations. Each new creation enhances the world. Selling gold in WOW or EQ just destroys the game for other people and requires no creativity or work, just the ability to cheat and bot.

For the record, Aimee is a bot, but she doesn't cheat. She has sophisticated anti-hacking code developed by Francis Chung.
