Yes. People do different things. I've been a verified paid member since November 2005. I only found out about the forums when Phedre mentioned them. I have talked to/with Ulrika, Phedre, and Kendra outside of these forums (and really, I've never really talked /to them/ in the forums). Simply because you are unable/unwilling to conceive of a situation in which there are /newcomers/ to your world does not make it so. Thinking people - the ranks of which I am becoming more and more convinced you can't claim membership in - rely on more than their own prejudices to make decisions.

I seek out the compelling arguments. What you don't understand is what is compelling to me might not be compelling to you, and visa-verse.

From the left the view is quite different than the view from the right. Once we understand this fact, we are better able to understand the point of view of the other side.

The easy thing to do is assume the opponent is stupid, but nothing is gained. For me to gain from a discussion, I must receive the data and process it, store it and use it. Otherwise I get nothing. So rest assured I don't seek to obscure the compelling.

It's like a perverse form of Ockham's Razor. Instead of cutting off the unnecessary to accent the necessary, it's cutting off the actual subject by blowing up the silly.

Ockham's Razor in simplest form:

"The World is Round"
"The World is Round, because anvils are grey."

Ockham's Razor says to drop the unnecessary "because anvils are grey" because it is bears no meaning in regards to the World being Round. Indeed, its statement may be inaccurate.

Kevn's Razor:

"The World is Round"
"The World is Round because anvils are grey."

Kevn's response (adn that of most fundies): "NOT ALL ANVILS ARE GREY! And What defines an anvil? Does it need to have a blacksmith's hammer strike it before it's an anvil, and until then just a slab of iron? etc etc"

Everyone else: "What was that thing someone said about the world? All I know is Anvils may or may not be responsible for it, but not all are grey and their being an anvil may require a right of passage of some sort".

If 3 people have the same writing style and they all share identical attitudes, it's easy to see why one would think it. I caught Ulrika earlier this week sneaking in as an alt, she denied it until I proved it. Do I think she left for the week? No, she can have many alts.

It doesn't matter how many alts or mains say you're a passive-aggressive bigot, it doesn't detract that you are indeed a passive-aggressive bigot.

I have a similar writing style to Finn because I spent about a year in a chatroom with her before coming to SL. I have a similar writing style to Ulrika because we're both reasonably literate and don't suffer fools gladly.

Oddly, Kevn, you're the only one who thinks we're alts of each other.

Except that I don't share Ulrika's attitude. Note the bit about how she's an absurdist social democrat and I'm a literalist republican. (SMALL R! SMALL R! Not Republican. /republican/. I rarely state that for precisely that reason.)

Thank you, but it's really nothing. This is the oldest trick in the history of chat-rooms. We used to catch them all the time, and then verify with the ip address. Then we banned the ip because it was not conducive to a serious discussion.

No, the oldest trick in the history of chat rooms is scroll-flooding everyone off the channel, stopping the flood, rejoining the channel a split second after you stop, claiming admin priveleges and installing an admin 'bot to /kickban anyone not on the whitelist from the channel.

"Not conducive to a serious discussion" would be ignoring the compelling arguments.

The bots easily handled the floodbots. It took a person to find the alts, until we created an ip scanner script in mirc.
