It's my humble opinion these attacks are used as a way make one feel important or shore up ones own belief system. This exact quote of yours I feel can be attributed to both sides Kevn. Your christians do the same thing for the same reason. Now, as far as attacking christian religion, well, I'd attack ANY religion that gets right up in my face telling me I have to believe in what they believe in or their version of god will roast my chestnuts for eternity. It also irritates the hell out of me when a significant portion of said religion DEMAND that this secular country I live and was born in should be run by the religious laws that I do not believe in. It really bothers me when said religious group DEMANDS that their version of history and religious dogma be taught in public schools as some sort of fact instead of the fairy tales they are. And finally, I take a perverse personal pleasure out of upsetting the boat of any smug self righteous holier than thou individual or individuals who get on a soapbox and vomit out their beliefs and truly truly expect everyone who hears them to accept their nonsense because their words are the words of god and therefor cannot be denied. _____________________

Those aren't Christians. Those are idiots with an axe to grind that use their religion as their excuse to be bigoted maroons. Pat Robertson is one of those morons. The problem is that for every thousand people who get up, go to work, take care of their families, and generally just living their lives as good people, you have this one activist headcase who thinks its his personal mission to "cleanse the world". I think that bombing abortion clinics, throwing gas grenades in to pride parades, and beating up gays is abhorrent, and is NOT what my religion stands for. Those people are no more part of MY faith than if I went out, slit someone's throat, and then said "Kendra made me do it." You're doing a serious disservice to every single true person of faith when you start in to the "some people did bad things, so they're all like that" speech. so why isn't the topic, "why aren't -real- christians cleaning their own houses of fake christians?" as opposed to focusing on atheists? i don't think they're your real problem. p.s. 'cuz, believe me, we're just as frustrated as you with fakers. p.p.s. i hate fake atheists.  _____________________

With all due respect, you don't really come across as someone who was interested in serious, rational debate. You DO come across as someone who wanted to throw rocks at a hornets nest, and see what sort of trouble could be stirred up. A lot of folks have gone to a lot of trouble to post some good points and try to engage you in discussion, and I haven't seen you do anything but post a few pithy, couple-sentance replies. I was trying to find out what kind of atheistic attacks were taking place and I was told not to lump all christians together. I simply said that one shouldn't lump all atheists together either. Yet my origianl question still hasn't been answered. _____________________

Every now and then I get some Christians ringing my door bell, and asking if I'm a christian. If I say I'm not, they are trying to convince me that I really should become one.
Weird thing is that I never had an atheist ringing, and asking me if I was a christian and then trying to convince me that it would be for my own best to become an atheist. So imho Christians are more "attacking" then atheists. |

Weird thing is that I never had an atheist ringing, and asking me if I was a christian and then trying to convince me that it would be for my own best to become an atheist. So imho Christians are more "attacking" then atheists. heres the best way to get rid of a persistant Jehovah's Witness. Come to the door nude and when he asks "have you found Jesus" reply with "No come help me look for him" _____________________

The OP pointed out that it happens on nearly every thread here involving religion. At some point, someone starts making nasty jokes at Christians' expense. On the whole, though, what I see isn't a coordinated attack on Christianity by atheists, but rather a cancer that is growing from within the church. People like Pat Robertson are the church's own worst enemy. As was already pointed out, the title of this thread should be "Why isn't the Church cleaning its own house?" The truth is, it is. But as quickly as you get rid of one jerk, another one steps in somewhere else. Unfortunately, the very system that has evolved to make churches work is very vulnerable to bad apples come in, pretending they're good little churchgoers, and then hurting people badly. Those people walk away, hating the church and everyone in it. I see this all the time, and what really hurts is that there's nothing I can do about it. I can only watch and try to help when I can. |
