And don't forget that social norms are not the same across the board. Each culture has unique ones onto themselves.

As I understand it, a spiritual being does not have an inherent gender, but picks up habits and preferences in various lifetimes, and then "whoops!" gets a body this time around that doesn't match what they like to be. Pretty straightforward.
