I wonder why that is.

A few rules to make your SL experience a lot nicer:

- No talking about RL
- No (RL) politics
- No religion

I think politics and religion are quite fun to talk about. There are a number of religion and philosophy groups within SL for people like me, where open discussion is encouraged (there are also such groups where OPEN discussion is not tolerated).

But I'll certainly agree that Resident Answers is not an appropriate place for such conversations.

You never see 'em do it missionary style either. They're more exotic than people give them credit for, them pagans.

Way too long. I just read a few sentences to get the general drift.

This isn't the place for this. Nobody likes long-winded arguments for a certain political, religious, or philosophical point, especially in SL. They are the things that turn forums and chats into huge, pointless drama flamewars.

If you're unreligious and let the "missionaries" draw you into debate, they've won. They've trolled you. Instead, make sexual advances on them if they are of the same sex as I, or talk about how you think Satan is a really swell guy.

It's quoting me. How cute.

Rest assured: I still pity you.

Missionaries do NOT "troll", as you put it.

Think about it.

If you've found a really great restaurant, you'd tell all your friends, all your work colleagues, anyone you knew, that it was great, and how they should visit there because it's so wonderful. People generally are grateful that they've got somewhere else to go to eat now.

Now change that to 'religion', whatever one you wish to pick. You have found "the answer" and you want to tell others and hope that they choose to follow that answer for themselves too. It's not just 'doing others a favour', many faiths contain commands of some description to go out and tell others.

People may choose to go to that nice restaurant, or stick with the trucker's cafe they've visited for years. Very few people would attack anyone - verbally or physically - for daring to share that there may just be a better alternative to "Greasy Joe's". So quite why people get so abusive when it comes to religion, I really don't know. You still have that exact same choice whether to accept or reject what is presented to you.

The simple fact is that religious groups have every right to be in Second Life just as much as anyone else does.

Look everyone I'm really sorry. I should never have started that missionary thread. Should have known better by now. Really didn't mean to cause all this commotion. Really.

Yes they do. But is this about "being religious" in general, or about missionaries? I thought it was the latter. Difficult to tell when people keep re-opening threads that have been previously closed.

By the way, there is an enormous distinction between casually informing your colleagues about a new restaurant and..say... trying to turn them into disciples of a particular religion. It's one thing for a colleague to inform me about Pizzacato Slice that just opened down the road, but it begins to get irritating when representatives of said company start pushing leaflets through my door, and it would be downright infuriating if they sent people around to knock on my door and talk me into eating there.

I get a leaflet/menu from one of the many nearby eating establishments through the door almost every day. I don't get abusive about it though, if it's something that sounds interesting I keep it, if not, I bin it.

My choice.

Nothing. I don't use voice....... :p

On Jesuits: My Parish where I grew up and went to school for 12 years was run by Jesuists and I agree they are among the most forward thinking and "real world" of the orders. I have no problem with Religious groups here. As long as they don't harass or impede others living their Second Lives, they are welcome. They are subject to the same rules as we are.

Nor do I get abusive about it. I described it as 'irritating'. A very common reaction to junk mail. Even *that* is a step further than a casual remark like "oh by the way, have you eat at such and such a place down the road", but nowhere near as imposing as the Jehovah...cough... Missionary, approach.

Hence. Analogy = Bad.

I've not known any 'active evangelism' going on in Second Life, meaning avatars roaming the landscape preaching at others.

Most of the Churches I've seen keep their activities to their own land, which of course if you decide to visit then you are doing so by choice, and they have every right to discuss faith with you at that point.

Incidently, I used to have a landmark to a Second Life Mosque that someone had built, I was looking through my bookmarks last night and it seems to have disappeared.

And if I were to meet the person at the door I would politely ask them to not come back as I am not interested in what they were offering. And if they persisted I would take appropriate action. Which unfortunately I've had to do.
