From: Conan Godwin I'm going to make a child alt now. This thread has inspired me.
Anyone for a game of jump-rope? Hee! I've gotta great ol' jump rope... I'll hafta pull it out tonight! (I could suggest a few places to find good kid stuff, ya know) From: Strife Onizuka It is relevant and as long as it stays on topic it's relatively safe. Eventually the sands of time will bury it. I might be RPing a teenager by then. /me laughs Mari

From: Strife Onizuka I think it would be ok to discuss (in the current version feedback forum) the efficiency of the code that keeps the default av, Ruth, from being used. . I have rather a soft spot for the old girl these days. I think the general consensus of this thread is that child avatars get a raw deal. It's heartening to hear that the majority of people on here have come to this thread with open minds. I think, though, that it is in the nature of the forums generally to attract a larger proportion of the more reasonable residents - we get some reactionaries of course, but proportionally less it seems than exist in world. The majority of those who object to child avies on this forum seem, by and large, to atleast have objected in a thoughtful way.

From: Marianne McCann Maybe everyone can give me some feedback.
Would it make sense to have maybe an in-world question and answer with a panel of kid avvies and maybe their in-world parents? It wouldn't - couldn't - answer every question, but maybe it would help in some way both with what is allowed of us kid avvies, as well as showing a bit more of what we are.
Whatcha think? Crazy or good?
Mari Perhaps a better idea is just to carry a notecard with the url of this thread, to show to all the meanies who have the temerity to eject because of their ageist policies. This is probably one of the most well thought and and explanatory threads I've ever seen. At least then they don't have to go far to get good information, and can contact you later if they have questions.

Aswell as being sympathetic to child avatars, the other consensus reached so far on this thread seems to be that land owners should have the right to eject anyone they don't like. Going back to my metaphor used earlier, I should be able to eject someone if I don't like their hat - that doesn't mean I think their hat is morally wrong, I just don't like it.

Theres a big difference from being banned from a parcel and being AR'd with some exagerated junk you didnt do just becuase you were using a child AV. Of course with Black List type systems that are evolving - theoreticaly you could get banned from dozens of sims just becuase ONE banned you for having a child AV

But that's always going to be the case. The purpose of the thread is to say that not all kidplayers are evilbad, hopefully letting the reader know, and perhaps understand, that it's better to judge by behavior rather than appearance. Talk to any kid av's who come in, and it won't take long to determine the innocent from the not so.

A landowner banning kids , sy because he just doesn't like kids is fine. But to say OMG there's a kid on my land, PERVERT!, call the Cops, is a different issue.

Landowners rights are landowners rights, can't change those. But as I recall the discussion really turned towards the issue of ARing a couple kids and their mommy for talking - which is jes silly. From: someone Of course with Black List type systems that are evolving - theoreticaly you could get banned from dozens of sims just becuase ONE banned you for having a child AV /me nods. An knowing this is the "wave of the future" for SL (I don't remember the exact stuff, but I know Daniel Linden or one of them talked about no bannination in the futre, jes blacklisting), it becomes a bigger concern, ya know? From: Padu Andalso But that's always going to be the case. Behavior should always trump identity (I'll go with this, cuz "appearance" can be an issue in some instances). Maybe even more so in SL than anywhere, given we can be and do nearly anything. Mari

Mari Very Good Mari, and you can count on my support, and assistance. A lot of us kid avvies have learned how to deal with it, thoguh. We have a lot of "our" spaces. I hate to self-limit, though. 'specially cuz our family does a lotta 'splorin. I dunno how many would come here to read it, ya know? Hard t'get folks jes to read what information I carry around as it is, sometimes. I *would* encourage a visit to the Second Life Children build in the 4th birthday sims, when it opens. There's a lotta good stuff in there on dis topic. Also, a wander through the Second Childhood flickr set. But by the same token, how to get dat information to those who really need it? Any further thoughts? Mari

Yes I am totally opposed to any black list system, no matter how well run. It will lead to many people losing their ability to enjoy Second Life with no fair apprasal of how they ended up on the list.

Bound to be troubles with 'em. That said, we use one with a couple of the kid places, an so far they seem to be okay. So far. Mari

Mari Yes. Blacklists are never good. You can't stop informal, word of mouth stuff, but any official listings I am dead set against.

From: Har Fairweather Maybe an outreach effort? Send personalized IMs or notecards to some of the anti-child people who seem halfway rational and offer to meet with them in a neutral setting of their own choice and "seminar" with them and any friends they want to bring along? Or maybe offer them tours of innocent-child sites with an emphasis on whatever you do to keep out the pedo-pals? Probably few would accept, but some might, and then spread the word, maybe, and even the refusers would be left with something to think about. Yesterday, I found myself with another challenge, which shows the difficulties to that outreach. While in SL04 PG, a pair of German SL members spotted me and (in German, thank you translation software) talked about how much they hated "kinderavatars." There was a language barrier initially (though they changed to English), but the 'prejudice barrier' was much higher. While I did try to reason with them a bit, I was automatically assumed to be lying about anything I said -- while at the same time, I was supposed to automatically accept what they said as fact. Talking about what some of us kids went through IRL as kids was called a "sob story," but I told being a kid was wrong because of what other RL kids went through. EVentually, they left because "this conversation isn't going anywhere" (true, because really, how could it?). Unlike the arguments of what kids could or could not attach, and what their laws might do to them if such did happen (which, I suspect, Ray Bolger might have a term for most of those arguments), their argument against kids in SL was based purely out of a revulsion for what they assumed I could do, and an assumption that anything I said was a falsehood due to them being "sickened" by my presence So it seems to me that any efforts need to be from a higher level, perhaps. And I doubt that will ever happen. Yet until people understand what *is* allowed in SL, some will assume otherwise. :-/ Anyone have any idea of how to help people - especially the closed minded - understand dat us kids *by and large* are okay? From: Yumi Murakami But in Second Life, no-one can stop the child av's player clicking "wear" on an object, or indeed just saying something sexual. Congratulations! You inspired a photo! I give you... kids wearing specialized body attachments! http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=183580Mari

"Eventually," Marianne? Good. That means they stayed around a while - and they heard. They may not have liked getting their presumptions challenged, and they may not have agreed on the spot. But they heard, and now they have taken away something to think about, whether theylike it or not. Don't get discouraged. Little drops of water wear down entire mountain ranges; it just takes time.

Well, I've now seen "height discrimination" at work first hand. On Friday, in an adult club, this was the conversation (shorthanded):
Staff to patron: "We don't allow child avatars here."
Patron: "I'm 5'6" in RL, so that's how tall I made my avatar. I'm not a child."
Staff: "Change your height or you'll be banned for having a child avatar. We don't allow child avatars here."

From: Broken Xeno Woah. Okay. I hate it when I see slaves with their masters, talking as a slave would to a master. I cannot freaking stand hearing them, and some days I swear if I heard another person say "master, may I" I will freaking go off. It drives me freaking insane, it sounds so silly, so retarded... TO ME. I would never AR them for that, because to them it's not silly. That's an opinion, and it's like RL, they have the right to be there and speak how they want as much as you have the right to click "TELEPORT." You can't AR them if they are not being directly offensive. So they are calling her mommy, oh well. That isn't hurting you in any way, and it's not offensive. Get over it. Could not have said it better myself! Not that I hate the Slave/Mater talk, but the part about individual rights. Brandi...xxx
