..., but now-a-days wax-n-knife is the rare method.

This brought back memories. (caution - Trout's age is about to show)

When I was in college, I was the news editor of the school paper. We actually had a wax machine and razor blades and did all our layout on light tables. The articles were printed on the world's first Mac's, I think.

Once we did our layouts, the copy editor would give it one final look, and he always had a sheet of letters all waxed up. If he found a mistake that he had missed in the first round of editting, he would carefully carve it out and then cut out the right letter to fix it.

Geesh. I feel ancient now. Those were good times. I remember going in there at 3:00 in the afternoon and walking out at dawn the next day, having barely made another deadline.

sounds like a clip from an old b&w tv show, with the paper boy standing on the street yelling "COME AND GET IT! GET YOUR NEWSPAPER, HERE!"

My alarm goes off at 4:40 am every workday - but I do get to leave the office at 3:30 each afternoon and I get every other Monday off.

Basically the same for me,

Up at 3:30am work starts at 6am off at 3:45pm

Everyother Friday off.

Saturdays, I sleep late and get up at 6am. Put in 8 to 10 hours in my shop.

You guys work hard! I usually roll in between 8:00 and 8:30, but I'm there until I'm done, which could be 7:00, 8:00, occasionally the next morning. Usually it's around 5:00 to 6:00, though. I'm also pretty good about sneaking out the back door when work is really light to make up for those times when it's brutally busy.

I guess it really is too late to say good morning, even here on the left coast.
So Good Day everyone.
Today's stage at Le Tour was an individual time trial on a flat 29.5km course. Stefan Schumacher surprised us all by coming in with the best time of 35min 44sec. As you can see from the picture he has also taken the overall race leader's Yellow Jersey.

Way to go, Stefan! Doesn't he look happy?

Thanks for today's update, Kaimi!

*faints*

But the early daily departure time and the every other Monday off are excellent trade offs.

I dunno...The idea of brushing snow off my car at that time of day during the winter may not make such an equitable tradeoff, at least for me

Snow?? what is this snow stuff? Is it like ground clutter? If you get it on your shoes can you get it off?

No kidding! I lived in Wisconsin for a little over 2 years. Got up at 3am to leave by 4. Drive 30miles on county roads to get to work before 5. They don't plow the main highways that early let alone county roads.

/me doesn't not miss the snow.

I have to go up and down several fairly steep hills on barely plowed county roads just to reach the main State Highway. I know from where you speak. I am grateful for my 4 wheel drive.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

so, whoever is leading the race gets to wear a yellow jersey? you get to wear it, but have to hand it off to someone who takes your prestigious position?

bummer!
Yes, the rider with the lowest cumulative time (for all the stages so far) at the end of each day is given a yellow jersey, which he wears the following day. It is a big deal to have ever worn it, even for one day. The rider who gets it at the end of the last stage is the TdF winner.

There is also a green jersey for the current leader of the sprint points competition and a red and white polka dot jersey for the current leader of the climber's ("King of the Mountain";) points competition.

At the newspaper I worked for so many years ago, the desktop publishing software used included a proprietary news word processing system for copy, Photoshop for photos, and Freehand for illustration and advertising. Quark Xpress was used for layout and page management, and from there the pages would be sent to a big Linotype film printer, which would be used to make the printing plates.

Um. Hope this answered your question =^_^=
I worked at a newspaper many years ago right when the shift from hot to cold type was happening. I was hired to work in the composing room after they laid off the old Linotype operators. It wasn't done completely at the editors desk yet. The new typesetters had computer keyboards to type up the copy which would come to us on paper to be pasted-up on the page layouts, which were then photo processed to make the press plates. It was a fun job, I worked evenings and got to read the news the before anyone else. And then in the morning there would be my free copy on my doorstep. Cool.

When I was a taxi driver in Wichita Kansas I used to get up about 3:00am in the winter and stumble out to my cab in my robe, in the snow and start the engine and leave it running while I brushed my teeth and got dressed, so it would be ready to go when I was. Brrr.

I have a garage so I do not have to brush snow off of the car. That time is hard in the middle of winter when there is so little daylight anyway. Right now, it is already pretty light out as I drive off at 5:15 so it does not feel as early as it is.

I could maybe deal with it in the summer, but rolling out of bed at 6 on a cold morning is hard enough for me.
