From: Lexxi Gynoid My impression, which could very well be wrong, is that South Dakota is covered with snow. About year round.
I know that is not correct, as it is south of Canada. Which would make Canada snow covered year round. And I know I've seen pictures of people in heavy clothing walking around in non-snow covered scenery in Canada. Though they do call Canada the great white north. LOL Well, it's good thing, cause otherwise the igloos we live in would melt . . .

Has anyone seen this? The link was given to me by a friend. It's a narrative of one woman's experiences during the Nazi invasion of Ukraine in 1941, done in sand art and to music. I've never seen anything quite like it . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOMgDbcA84A

I finally got the phone call this evening that I expected after seeing the devastation in Haiti on the news this morning.
"Hey Mom, I am going to Haiti on Friday. I got my orders this morning."
He just got back from the Middle-East in early December and sounded really down about leaving his family again so soon. I told him once this mission is over he will look back and be happy that he helped people in their time of need. His wife is amazing and will hold the fort at home.
I am so blessed and so proud he is my son.
Thanks for all the info on donations. Times like these bring out the best and worst in people. Be very careful where you donate. The scammers are trying to make money off this tragedy. Thanks Joshooah for the links.

I just heard from my friend Ham Rambler, who owns Dublin Virtually Live and is a charter pilot in real life. On his Facebook wall awhile ago he mentioned that he was refueling in Nova Scotia on the way taking a search and rescue team to Haiti.

Josh, and others - thank you so much for posting information about Haiti, and links for charities. I am heartsore over this. An earthquake of this magnitude anywhere is horrific, but there...in Haiti...where the people have so little...

From: Claire Silverspar I'd love to go to San Diego, but South Dakota is the one I meant. Sorry for confuddling ppl lol. The Uni I go to has great links there, so I'm practically guaranteed a place if I pass this year - especially as there seems to be only 4 of us seriously wanting to go. Its in the middle of nowhere, and I have a feeling after living in a huge city forever, its gonna be a massive shock to go to such a rural place, but it'll be worth it. Anyway, I got told there's cheap flights from the local airport, so maybe I can do some traveling during my days off lol. Thought I'd share some random stats I got told today: Population of Brookings, SD : ~18,000 (closest town to the Uni) Population of Manchester, UK: ~2.5 million Number of undergraduates at SDSU: ~11,000 Number of undergraduates at MMU : ~30,000 (MMU is only one of 3 Universities within just a few miles of each other.) South Dakota is about the same size as England and has a population of about ~800,000 England has a population of ~51 million. Its gonna be one hell of a culture shock! i went from city living to extreme rural america at age 20. it took me about 3 years to adapt to the nothingness. it was very hard and i felt isolated and alone often. since then however, our population has doubled (which isn't saying much). but now, i feel suffocated and afraid when around lots n lots of people and buildings all the time, and the cement/brick atmosphere is depressing. i love my nature and my trees. i could probably assimilate back into city living, but i predict it would take another three HARD years to adapt... but that's just speculation and probably worry over nothing. with the proper motivation, i'll happily live anywhere if i can be with someone i love. not sure if this is helpful or not.

Malia: Wow China! One of my options was Hong Kong, but I didn't want to go to a country where I didn't speak at least some form of the language lol. China sounds exciting though! From: Lexxi Gynoid My impression, which could very well be wrong, is that South Dakota is covered with snow. About year round.

And I know I've seen pictures of people in heavy clothing walking around in non-snow covered scenery in Canada. Though they do call Canada the great white north. I'd be in SD from mid-August right through to May/June. I got told that once I get halfway through October, it'll be sunny one day, then the next I'll wake up with the place covered in snow. They said the temp ranges from 30C to -30C, often within a few days. Once it snows, they said the snow would stick around until Spring. I'm looking forward to it It might cure me of my fascination with snow lol. Scylla: I did see that not so long ago. Someone posted it on my facebook. Its incredible isn't it? I can't remember how many times I've watched it. Hugs to you Lula, and your family. Good Luck to your son. He should be very proud of himself and the good work he does. mmm thanks for brekkie Mo, I've not eaten yet today. /me noms some fruit and throws in one of the Banana muffins she made yesterday.

I consider myself lucky. Though I'm right in the heart of the city, I've lived with my Grandma for a couple of years, and she lives in a little village on the moors. There's a lot of nature round there, and its blissfully quiet. I have a view of the Pennines from my bedroon window when I stop with her. I'll miss those hills. I think since I'll be living on campus, I wont find it too bad. It'll be quieter, sure, but its still a campus full of students in a relatively small area. It won't exactly be deserted.

From: Lexxi Gynoid My impression, which could very well be wrong, is that South Dakota is covered with snow. About year round. Many have that view of South Dakota. Yet Souix Falls gets an average of 39.6 inches of snow each year, while Denver gets an average of 61.4. Denver only has about 10-20 more sunny days than Souix Falls. As for temperatures - July and August are the hottest months in SD, with average highs in those months of roughly mid-80's. For spring thru fall - April thru Oct - the average high and low are within a couple of degrees of Denver. However, for Nov thru Mar, those averages tend to run 10-20 degrees lower than Denver's.......... and I think Denver is too cold in the winter.

I told him once this mission is over he will look back and be happy that he helped people in their time of need. That's not much time to spend with family, it's a tough time to be in the military. Hopefully, he will find this assignment healing after being in a war zone.

China sounds exciting though! Out of all China, Hong Kong would be the easiest place for English speakers, as it was under British rule for so long. Most people speak at least some English, and even the road signs were bilingual. I was only there for a week, but I liked it a lot. It was quite clean and modern, a sanitized miniature version of China.

From: Maureen Boccaccio My breakfast: Does this mean you're feeling better? Or not quite yet? Hope you feel great now or very soon, Dear Maureen. From: 3Ring Binder i went from city living to extreme rural america at age 20. it took me about 3 years to adapt to the nothingness. it was very hard and i felt isolated and alone often. since then however, our population has doubled (which isn't saying much). but now, i feel suffocated and afraid when around lots n lots of people and buildings all the time, and the cement/brick atmosphere is depressing. i love my nature and my trees. i could probably assimilate back into city living, but i predict it would take another three HARD years to adapt... but that's just speculation and probably worry over nothing. with the proper motivation, i'll happily live anywhere if i can be with someone i love. not sure if this is helpful or not. I lived in an isolated village in the North of England for a year, when I was 21-22. At that time all I wanted to do was go dancing in the city. When I was about 35 I got to live in rural N.Calif. and I loved it. Now every time I leave the city I think about how great it would be to live out there (where ever it is). But then every time I come home to my house I feel as if I never want to move. From: 3Ring Binder now THAT would be an interesting experience! QFT. A rare opportunity.
