Smell = rotting leaves
campfire = the interminable smell of smoke in EVERYTHING
Snuggling in sleeping bags = not NEARLY as nice as snuggling on a nice mattress under a duvet. And lots and lots more room to . . . well, snuggle, there too. :D

(Sleeping bags are VERY constricting)


I'm with you. I'll spend all day in the woods, but come nightime I better have a nice warm cabin with a comfy bed . Or a nicely furnished recreational vehicle.

Good for her. My father-in-law quit after cancer left him breathing through a hole in his throat.
During my short career as an emergency medical technician, on an ambulance crew, about 1/4 of our calls were to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients in respiratory distress. Normal people take a breath when the amount of CO2 in their blood climbs to a certain level. COPD patients aren't prompted to take a breath until the amount of oxygen in their blood drops to a certain level. So the paramedics can only give them a small amount of oxygen or they will stop their breathing entirely. They can never take a good breath of air ever.
Almost all the COPD patients had oxygen tanks next to their sofas. And most of them had a pack of cigarettes on their coffee table. It was sad.
I started smoking in 5th grade - 10 yrs old. I have had chronic bronchitis for more years than I can remember. It took a diagnosis of emphysema, 2 yrs ago, to get me to finally be successful in quitting. Luckily, I was diagnosed very early due to a voluntary lung scan that I had done and my emphysema is very mild right now.

The nearest I get to a bed while camping is a foldable cot. Anything beyond that and a snow creek bath just isn't campin' for me.

The main reasons I enjoy gettin' away are...

There's nothing in the world like waking up before sun rise on a frosty morning.

Gently coaxing the dieing embers of last night's fire into life to make coffee will always produce a better cup of joe than any whatchamacallit machine produced in the modern world.

Watching the millions of visible stars fade into the sunrise is sorely missed in the "big city' where I currently reside.

I can list the sights, sounds, and smells from sun rise to sun set moment by moment.

3 you're spot on in your description of 'campfire smoke.' MMMMMMMM the smell.

The trick is to zip two or more sleeping bags together Scylla.

I did know a girl once who liked to "snuggle" as close to the well trodden trail as possible.. something about the thrill of having to keep quiet and the always present danger of being "caught".

I never did enjoy it quite as much though.

I spent a lot of time acting like a meerkat, popping my head up nervously over the bushes to see if anyone was coming.. so to speak..:)

Campfire smoke is both comforting and annoying. It is a little sooty.
The smokey smell I love is when my hubby has been cooking with the smoker and the rich, nutty smell of smoked meat is on his clothes and in his hair. Mmmm, delicious.

LOL @ the meerkat image . . .

Yeah, done the two sleeping bags together thing . . . there still just isn't enough room to really move around. You end up having to unzip them to really get at . . . stuff. And you're dealing all the while with roots and bumps and god knows what else digging into strange parts of your body at inopportune moments.

Also not big on the "danger of being caught." Although I did once have sex on an embankment overlooking what I thought was an unused set of train tracks. Imagine my surprise when the 12:50 commuter from Oakville rolled by . . . :eek:
