Not sure if it is a two-to-one thing, but I am sure that the non-owners do outnumber the owners of guns. There are many that support the rights but do not own any guns -- like me up until about a year ago.
And there are probably some gun owners who don't think it's such a good thing that Mexican drug dealers can drive out of the US with cars full of gun show purchases.

There are a lot of folks who think Americans all own guns. I don't, and in my circle of acquaintances, very few do ... but I was surprised at the high proportion of households myself. 2004 survey on firearm ownership in the U.S., Harvard University:

And then there are the guns that no one knows about....

Good point. And I wonder what the proportion is of people who own at least one who own several.

Today for Stage 7 Le Tour De France went into the Pyrenees, a 224km route that was pretty much uphill all the way, getting steeper and steeper.

Imagine my glee when I realized that Brice Feillu, a French rider on the French team Agritubel, riding in his first ever Tour de France, was in the nine man breakaway that got 11 minutes ahead of the peloton early in stage. I first heard of young Brice a few days ago when I chose him as the last pick on my fantasy cycling team, based on his rock bottom price and the fact that he shares the last name of Roman Feilu, a sprinter I had already picked – who it turns out, is, as I had hoped, his brother.

Players get to pick 15 riders for their fantasy teams and then choose which 9 will ride each day. Imagine my chagrin some time later when I realized that of course I had not chosen this unknown guy for today.

Team Astana – with their four possible Tour winners, set the pace for the rest of the field all day. And current overall leader's Yellow Jersey wearer, Fabian Cancellara stuck right with them for a long time. Which was pretty good for a guy who is more of a time trial specialist than a climber. Eventually, though he, and most everyone else fell back. Several of his Saxo Bank teammates did stay with the contenders at the front, including the guy they are hoping will win the Tour, Andy Schleck.

In the final km, on a steep ascent, 2007 Tour winner Alberto Contador of team Astana left the other big names behind, gaining 2 seconds on his teammate Lance Armstrong and moving into second place overall. Moving into first place overall was another first timer, from the breakaway, Italian Nocentini Rinaldo of team AG2R.

And my boy Brice won the stage!!! Chagrin chagrin.

Pictures here.

Today's results:

That is a myth. The real numbers show that private sales from the US provide very few of the guns used by Mexican drug gangs.

Getting caught transporting so much as a single cartridge into Mexico means a jail term.
A better thing to look at is how many weapons were previously owned by the Mexican army?

I personally like Fact Check.org when discussing such elusive numbers as how many guns seized in Mexico originated in the U.S. Here's a link and the conclusion after reviewing the Adminstration's and Fox News' disparate claims with regard to the percentage of guns seized that originate in the US. Their report is silent on the issue of private sales / gun shows, etc.

http://www.factcheck.org/politics/counting_mexicos_guns.html

"An Elusive Number

Given the lack of hard data from Mexico, we can't calculate a precise figure for what portion of crime guns have been traced to the U.S. Based on the best evidence we can find so far, we conclude that the 90 percent claim made by the president and others in his administration lacks a basis in solid fact. But we also conclude that the number is at least double what Fox News has reported, based on its reporters' mistaken interpretation of ATF testimony.

Whether the number is 90 percent, or 36 percent, or something else, there's no dispute that thousands of guns are being illegalIy transported into Mexico by way of the United States each year. "

Yes, thank you. I bailed from work a couple of hours early and took a nap - helped my headache a lot.

I'm too tired to look now, but I literally fell forward on my bed and went to sleep moments after I posted that last post last night. I think it was around 11pm. The one with the pictures in it. Light was on, somewhere in my mind was the idea of "ok, a nap might be goooddd zzzzzz". Woke up around 1am to turn off my light and computer. Then back to bed. I just can't seem to stay up lately.

On the other hand, and probably directly related, I've been having no problems waking up on time and getting to work before or at the time I'm supposed to be there (except for a few times when I'd have arrived a half hour or so before start time, but the train decided to stop moving for an hour at a time before deciding to move again).

Oh, I only mentioned the tiredness thing, because I feel myself slipping into sleep. And it isn't even 9pm yet!

The Resident Geek saw one of those "look at the arsenal we captured" photos and laughed. He pointed out that *every single piece of hardware* in the photo was *military* ordnance...automatic weapons, grenade launchers, RPGs...NONE of that stuff is available at US gun shows, or to private citizens.

The weapons used by the Mexican drug cartels aren't coming from gun shops or gun shows. They are coming from international arms dealers.

And yet, this is the sort of "evidence" that the gun banners use to "prove" that we need more restrictions on private gun ownership.

OK...so she's been to the Hangout, but doesn't hang out on the forums. That narrows it down, but makes it more difficult, too.

I like factcheck.org too. It seems likely to me that more guns are manufactured in the USA than in Mexico... But I have no hard fact whatsoever and didn't mean to imply that I know anything. I was under the impression that no one was disputing that legally anyone can buy guns at these shows, without background checks or waiting periods.

I especially hate it when the side I'm on resorts to misleading propaganda. I think you've hit the nail on the head, Lindal that it's the arms manufacturers and dealers who are profiting from what ever really is going on.

in fact, some of those guns ARE for sale at gun shows in the US. i've seen military weapons (m16's, fully auto's that shoot .223's, british 300's, black talon ammo of all calipers, etc) for sale there as recently as 2007. i have shot a fully automatic mini 14 in the nevada desert. i've been to several of the vegas gun shows, and while it is a droolfest for me, it is also concerning. there are not background checks. you buy, you walk out. however, they take your id and info. if you fail to register in a timely manner, someone knocks on your door. is the info presented valid? yet, another argument entirely.

Oh my goodness I'd hate to spoil it for anyone by posting about it here before they see it on tv. I'm really careful myself about avoiding finding out what happened before I see the recording each day. I'm sorry to hear you missed the most exciting part. Contador just flew.
The country they went through today was fabulous wasn't it? A lot of it could have been in CA I thought. Actually some of it could have been in San Diego County.

Tonight Steely and I went to a fantastic place you simply must see! It is a build by the NPIRL people and I will happily tell u guys where it is tomorrow cause i forgot to get a slurl. To say it was impressive and that i was awestruck woudl not do it justice.

I was not the only one who had a marvelous night, Damien and Hera danced and it was wonderful. You know what they say- there's no place like home.
