I know that there is no shortage of hurricane damage picks on the web but this link is to a good selection of pictures. There are some before and after picks that give an idea of the extent of the damage, so I thought I'd share it here for anyone that might be interested.

I saw where some Government type was telling people basically to not return to Galveston....ever. Awful.

Wow. Thank you, Tex. I cannot believe what I am looking at in these pics!!! Almost no words to describe the devastation. I heard they'd stopped letting people go back to Galveston.

people blink alot less if they spend alot of time in front of computers. In severe cases it causes the sensitivity to light, I'm not sure if it's directly due to dryness. I'm not sure what the remedy is either, but I know this is a somewhat common problem of the digital age. There's some truth to the geek hiding in the dark stereotypes. Flourescent lighting such as is common in most Dilbert-esque places makes matters far worse due to a strobe between the flourescent flicker rate and monitor refresh flicker rate.

so stop staring at SL and blink once in awhile! :p
Yep, I have a small alarm clock that I use to remind me to take breaks from the computer and I have switched all my monitors over to LED, which helps also. It is much worse at work because of the flourescent lighting -- almost all of my home lighting is hallogen. Computer use does add to the problem, but apparently it is very common for people that have had lasik to develop dry eye problems 5-10 yrs later. Eye doc says mine is one of the worst cases he has seen.

A day or so ago they were letting residents of Galveston "look and leave" at their homes and businesses. A lot of people are angry that they are not allowed back in, but Galveston Island is basically non-functional at this point. No water, electricity, sewer, fuel, food, or emergency and medical services. In the link I posted the "before and after" pictures are from Bolivar peninsula, which is just north/east of Galveston across the entrance to the bay. That area seems to have been the hardest hit. Due to beach erosion and the level of destruction there has been talk of condemming at least parts of that area and not allowing it to be rebuilt.

I believe I heard that a certain portion of the beach is public property (certain distance based on tide levels?) and you can not build on this public area. Due to erosion from the storm, this distance is higher up now and now encompasses where some of the homes were.

which has been has been playing in my head since Tex posted those pictures. What a disaster. It's heartbreaking. The sorm's destruction, I mean. Having to keep singing the song to myself is merely annoying.

That's true Starfire. The beach erosion and the changing location of the boundary between public and private property has been a long running battle in Galveston. Especially on the west end of the island which is beyond the seawall.

In most if not all of the main parts of Galveston the homes and businesses will be repaired and rebuilt. After some period of time it will return to normal. Other nearby areas may not come back. In some of these areas, rebuilding and waiting for the next major storm to wipe it out again seems highly questionable.

One of many sad stories if Galveston claims eminent domain and doesn't allow rebuilding on the Bolivar Peninsula is that lone 2 story house still standing. It will be condemned in that case. The owners lost thier house in Rita and had the architect design a home to withstand a category 5 hurricane and I would say he did a wonderful job!. Wonder how busy that architect is going to be now.

Even though there's no legal rank on a pirate ship, everyone recognizes you're the one in charge. Even though you're not always the traditional swaggering gallant, your steadiness and planning make you a fine, reliable pirate. Arr!

OMG, Tex... Those before and after picks really bring it home what the devastation is actually like. I did not really have a clear conception. My heart goes out to you, and all your neighbors... Best of luck to you.

My pirate name is:

Red Anne Cash

Passion is a big part of your life, which makes sense for a pirate. You're musical, and you've got a certain style if not flair. You'll do just fine. Arr!

Thanks Allegria. Compared to most Ike was very kind to me. I live in NW Houston 70 miles or more from the Gulf. Other than some tree and fence damage all I had to suffer thru was a day without electricity. Over a million people still have no electricity, and most of those aren't expecting it to come back on for 4 or 5 days if not more.

A pirate's life isn't easy; it takes a tough person. That's okay with you, though, since you a tough person. Two things complete your pirate persona: style and swagger. Maybe a little too much swagger sometimes -- but who really cares? Arr!

Tex all my best goes out to you and the folks and Texas. Imagine I am crying just because my Intenet is still disabled.

Dirty Anne Rackham

You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.
