From: 3Ring Binder good luck. i hate having to do that. I did it a couple of weeks ago, reinstalling XP only took about 1o minutes, thanks to one of those hidden partition thingies. Removing all the Dell add ons took over an hour.

From: Brenda Connolly I have only a few online accounts to remember, 1 email, 1 bank that handles all my accounts, my insurance, my toll pass, SL, Ebay, and utilities. Even though I shop online I don't open accounts at any of the sites. I'm not great at passwording, all mine are variations on a theme which helps me remember them, although the theme is not too obvious. I don't change them as often as I probably should. "kirk" "spock" "sulu" "bones" "ohura" "kaan" ...

Lappy is currently uploading all its data to a removable HD for back up- i managed to turn it on so-- soon it will be wiped and reformatted wheeeeee! You have to love that external HDs are so cheap nowadays! I was in a place I shouldn't have been, and downloaded a program that I shouldn't have downloaded 2 months ago. Damned virus was created strictly to be a computer killer and not a spreader. It immediately disabled my AV, Spybot SD, HijackThis and a couple other programs. I had BSOD within 10 minutes and couldn't even do a recovery afterwords. I would have been more upset but I was actually kind of in awe of the creator, smartest virus I have ever encountered. 75 gig External HD and a Linux disc and I was able to pull everything off I needed and I Fdisc'd and was backup and running within a few hours.

From: Brenda Connolly .... Removing all the Dell add ons took over an hour. I absolutely hate that part of getting a new PC. It takes more time to remove the crap than for me to install all of my various pieces of software.

Oh yeah! I forget they do screwy things like that. That's a great idea. Amara if your lappy didn't come with an OS cd it prolly has one of these. Check the Dell website for your model and see it there's instructions for restoring it. (after you finish copying everything). Did it come with a floppy disk? The floppy may access the hidden partition.

The floppy may access the hidden partition. Yes it is a Dell- - have not noticed a partition on it whereas the HP does have it- there are six or seven computers in this house!!! I want to pull my hair out- all the others are old dinosaurs I have not had the getupngo to get the old data off and scour them- except for son's which is a worthless e-machine- boy have i learned lesson on that one- we figured- buy cheap machine- what the hell- its not like he needs power computing... ok- Pirates wont run on it- you can imagine what would happen if I whispered SL near it right? It would pickup its cords and run from the room screaming. This one is a damn good machine- but- a work machine- vid card on it sux major- so the OpenLife viewer did let me get in and i was able to move but at a snail's pace. assuming the wipe and reload goes well that is the next thing tk it to get its vid card properly installed. I did not see an electric plug for it Vamp- you asked something similar before. I know it is well seated because when i first turned on the machine after installing it the screen looked different- as it does when you make changes.. but it sd reboot to complete install- i did- and everything went black. I googled the problem and it seems i have to go into the bios and tell it to stop looking at the old card (onboard) and look at the new one- problem aside from the terror inherent in the word BIOS is that i cant get to it!@! the option goes by beyond fast- i dont even see it- So the back up of crap continues- funnyall the stuff one gathers in two years.. lappy is only two you see.. Steely will be walking me thru this so I am not keeping all this exquisite torture to myself- the man is a genius- a very patient genius He will have to deal with my desperate cries when it won't do what i beg it to do - I know- sorry- I am borrowing trouble ... let me revive my Optimist- she fell asleep...

@Amara, I've seen so many people with video card problems on these forums I forget. If you get an image out of it at all, then it's prolly not a power thing. If you have that many machines kicking around, borrow a monitor from one of the others and hook up two monitors to the new machine. I bet when windows loads it'll switch. You can then at least see what you're doing.

personally, the first thing i do to a new computer is format, partition, and install winxp. i would especially do this if it was from dell or some other outfit that likes to preinstall crap from partnerships.

From: Allegria Kanto Here's a question for you guys, relating to my security thread. How do you remember all your passwords? I've always been a firm believer in "don't write them down", but online banking both work and personal, work computer, credit card companies, email accounts, all the SL's and Wow's and Ancestry.com that charge a monthly fee.... How do you remember all those pwords? Even once, let alone, changing them periodically. I'm feeling very overwhelmed about this. I just remember them. Pep (But then, we guys don't have a menopause, just a midlife crisis)
