lol Lexxi. I like that one :D

I spose those guys don't really have an accent. Though I have heard people thinking the cor blimey guv'nor accent is the regular british and strangely I've had people think my accent is normal.
I guess it depends what your used to, but yeah...BBC is generic british

The "regular" British accent is the BBC accent. At least that is how I've heard it discribed. I have never found "BBC" on the map.

(hehe, yes, I know what BBC stands for)

I have a very neutral, "regular" English accent, which at a push, is BBC. Although modern day BBC English is nothing like the strangulated vowels of 1950s newsreaders (or the Queen, who is the only person alive who speaks in that fashion).

Oh, and for the uninitiated, the "cockney" accent employed by Dick van Dyke in the Disney hit "Maori Pawrpince" is by no means authentic.

I don't even know where Charter Way is.

I was raised in Visalia, which is about half way between Fresno and Bakersfield in the South San Joaquin. I turned 18 and got the hell out of town so fast you could see flames from my footprints. Moved to Tacoma, Seattle, then down to Olympia. I'd be perfectly happy living here the rest of my life. Or not. I'll probably finish my career here and then go somewhere interesting.

sounds like you were raised in the good part.

A selection of British accents:

http://www.bl.uk/learning/langlit/sounds/index.html

Though some of these aren't really strong. Birkenhead is the scouse accent. My accent is on there too :D

(try the aberdeenshire one...see if you can understand it ;) )
Thanks for posting that Claire! I just had some fun with it, really took me back.

My mom and my Aunt Olive, unlike all the other girls who quit school at 14 to work in the Leicester hoisery factory, or anyone else in their family, except my Uncle Derek, who went to college, managed somehow to have perfect BBC accents.(Not the strangled kind the queen uses.) My American friends always thought she sounded so cool on the phone.

lol - the South San Joaquin is one of the worst places on earth. Visalia was like that town in Footloose only with hotter weather and not quite as progressive an attitude. Now it's exactly the same, but with more stripmalls and pollution. The main industries are farming, burning old rubber tires and hatred.

I go back to visit family, but honestly, good riddance to that place.

Ah the life, farming hatred and tires. Then burning them, the tires, while laughing evilly and stroking a white cat.

Charter Way is the dark side of Stockton. I have been to Visalia recently... during the day, i find it safer. i can't speak for night time dangers, although i suspect they both compare to Watts on a hot summers full moon night.

I lived in the UK in the same period you were there. My secretary in London came from Yorkshire, but had a perfect BBC accent. She informed me that girls in their late teen years who expect to have careers, especially in the home counties, are all taught that accent before they finish their schooling.

I drove through there last summer. Seemed nice enough from the freeway... sounds like it's just as well we didn't stop and try to cause any trouble.

A Message from Ireland

Speaking of accents -- there are also geo-specific attitudes. Here's one, in a message I received from a sister-in-law:

'We, in Ireland , can't figure out why you people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States.

On one side, you had a pants-wearing female lawyer, married to another lawyer who can't seem to keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer, who goes to the wrong church, who is married to yet another lawyer, who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run!

Now...On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate 'Mc', married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship !!! !!!!!! ?

What in God's name are ya lads thinkin' over there ? ! ? ! !

and I knew people my age who had been shamed into modifying their accents when they got to university. But until WW2 came along, when my mom was in her late 20's, she had no hope of escaping industrial serfdom. But I never once heard her lapse into a working class accent. As far as her personality she was very easy going and fun. When I asked her about it she didn't seem to think it was a big deal, she just wanted to speak clearly or something.

Unless you count my dad's funeral, the birth of my daughter or my mom's cancer surgery, I haven't had a legitimate vacation since 2002. I'm trying to work up some sympathy for you, 3Ring. Really, I am.

NNNGHHGHHHHH. /strains mightily.

Nope. No good.

I bet you're looking forward to it more than you're willing to admit. Have fun with the new gig!
