From: Trout Recreant Holy Crap!!! Is THAT what vacations are like!!?? How have I missed out on that? Now I AM feeling sorry for myself.
Seriously, I know I need one. It's tough to break away and I'm in an industry that doesn't exactly have a great reputation for the way it treats its employees - at least those in my position. That's just life. I knew that when i signed on, so I'm not going to start whining now.
Someday I'll take a break. Maybe next year. I sneak out early on a Friday every so often and I recently took a whole day off. Plus, I get regular holidays, like Christmas and July 4, etc. So it's not like I work 24/7/365. I'm with a pretty good firm now - unlike my previous ones, and I'll probably be able to take some time at some point. awww, everyone needs a proper holiday....huggles for trout and for everyone else...for whatever reason...

From: Trout Recreant lol - the South San Joaquin is one of the worst places on earth. Visalia was like that town in Footloose only with hotter weather and not quite as progressive an attitude. Now it's exactly the same, but with more stripmalls and pollution. The main industries are farming, burning old rubber tires and hatred.
I go back to visit family, but honestly, good riddance to that place. One place i will never forget is Trona, In the southeastern California. I'm not sure it's in the San Joaquin Valley. The town is a mining town owned basically (or was at that time) by the Kerr-McGee plant built there for processing soda ash. The entire town is covered with lime dust, and a creepier, more depressing place can't be imagined. Crappy little strip malls, depressing, junk-strewn yards, and not a blade of grass, or a cactus, or even a stray dog to be seen... It was raining the day i went through, so the piles of lime dust were interspersed with puddles of gray quicksand, and the buildings streaked with the dust turned to mud by the rain. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. (My apologies to anyone who lives in Trona)

From: 3Ring Binder i don't work in an office. i have to wear running shoes because i have to chase and catch kids. i can't wear a dress. i've considered buying a head-protecting helmet. my job breaks down my spirit and turns my soul a darkened color.... i wish i could find something i like, with a boss i like (most important part) that allows me to at least sit on occasion. I c'n sympathise. I worked as an aide at a school for kids was developmentally disabled f'r a while. I hadda learn to not wear dangly earrings an stuff, cuz they could be ripped out. Running shoes were a must-have, too. I left there after an injury, an seeing other teachers and aids gettin hurt.

From: Max Herzog Is this an opportune time to point out that in Sweden, my company gives me 6 weeks holiday (plus public holiday) and also has a "work account" scheme whereby every day worked gives a further 15 minutes towards holiday (=1 week extra for each year)? Or not? I get 20 days holiday, 3 of which I have to reserve for between Christmas and New Year. i think this works out at like 4 working weeks. But then, we have to use our holiday days for hospital/doctor appointments etc, so we prolly end up with 2/3 weeks per year. /me tries to ignore the sudden green tinge to her skin

From: LittleMe Jewell I worked hard to get to this point - now I try to enjoy it. Every year we usually take 2 vacations of roughly a week each and 2 or 3 long weekend trips of 3-4 days each. I don't buy a lot of material things with my money - instead I travel with it.
I don't have any kids at home any more either, though we did start this schedule of vacations when the kids were in late middle school. I've never had a vacation. Just occasionally a day off here or there. /me tries to ignore the sudden green tinge to her skin I'm sorry you only get 2 to 3 weeks off per year.

From: LittleMe Jewell aaawwww /me sends a hug and lots of sympathy your way Thanks. I'm just glad that Sept. 1st is Labor day. Then I'll probably learn that that isn't a holiday I get off, or that I'll be forced to work that day anyway. After that is Oct. 13, Columbus Day. Vetern's day November 11, Tuesday, and Thanksgiving November 27, Thursday - and yes, I have to work the monday before (and the rest of the days after) Vetern's day, and Friday after Thanksgiving. December 25, Thursday (yay, another Friday after a holiday I work). gosh darn it. Jan 1 - Thursday, yet another friday I work after a holiday. At least there are two holidays in January - also Jan 19, Martin Luther King Jr.'s day

From: Brenda Connolly Random Pic Alert: I dropped by the Star Trek Museum last night. Great piccy, went scouting for Picard or Riker hmmm? hehe that was awesome - Zorba was a great touch. I contacted Prospero Linden after talking to you about the cornfield, to see if he could send me there (he was the only Linden on I could find at the time) and he disawoed all knowledge of how to do it too Just have to try one day to get to Blue's office hours - living at the ass end of the world sucks sometimes BTW Please bear with me I am catching up from Friday

From: Trout Recreant Wow. What do you do? Work in a daycare or something? That sounds pretty bad. As many hours as I put in, at least I like my job (sometimes). Were'nt you applying for a desk job a while back? I thought you got one of those jobs. last year i worked with ED kids, and had a particularly gruesome year with a certified child sociopath who was quite violent. i ended up being the main disciplinarian and leader in the room, as the certified teacher was not only inept, but lazy. i left the job early not because of that tho, as that child was (thankfully) removed from the school. i actually left the school and took a leave of absence before the year ended.... from stress... because basically, i was being stalked by the teacher. it was bad. so i haven't really been on vacation, but medical leave. the teacher is gone, those types of students are gone, and i will go back to strictly working with autistic kids, and downes syndrome kids, etc. i look forward to falling in love with my job again, but the fact that i have to bathe at an indecent hour and actually leave my house and socialize with the RL people feels a little..... overwhelming.... i've been hiding out all summer.

Anyone watch the Bob Saget Roast on the Comedy Channel? LOL! I laughed so hard I was crying! Then it got me to thinking about my Dad. He still has- somewhere in the house- the original Bob Newhart Comedy Record. I found some of the audio clips on Youtube. Great stuff! Found some old Lenny Bruce too! FWIW- I watch alot of TV. Somewhat. It sits on the desk right next to the monitor. Jumping between Comedy Channel, Cartoon Network, History Channel, Discovery Channel, Food Network, TVLand, Sci-Fi Channel, and Travel Channel (cuz Andrew Zimmern RAWKS!!!).

From: Trout Recreant Were'nt you applying for a desk job a while back? I thought you got one of those jobs. i didn't get some, and i turned down some. some are still up in the air, including a desk job for a local lawyer. heaven forbid.... LOL i am being very picky. i don't want to keep changing jobs, so i want to find "the" job. fortunately, there are a lot of opportunities, and i get to be selective. the personality of the boss is critical to my decision making. i am so done with assholes. if i had my rathers, i'd take something that allows me to interact with the kids and work with computers at the same time. i hear rumor that the middle school might be losing their tech. if so, i'm all over that. no matter what, i have decided to no longer pursue my credentials to become a school teacher. i will pursue something else, i just don't know exactly what that is yet. there are so many different directions i can go. something will click. i am patient. in the meantime, i need spending money. so back to work i go!
