This discussion of accents is very interesting. I'm just glad I'm from Texas where we don't have accents.

/me waits quietly for the roar of laughter to stop.

Seriously, for me, I have as much trouble with local / regional names or slang as I do the accents.

Many years back I lived in Aberdeen Scotland for a while. Shortly after moving there I went to a local hardware store and asked for a flashlight. At first they tried to send me to a camera store. I said "No, what I want is a tube with a batteries inside and a light bulb on one end." The reply was "Aye, ya be wantin a torch." First thing that popped in my head was burning rags on the end of a stick.

Now as for as the ladies go, a little smile and a British (Scottish in particular) accent, and I'm yours to command. :)

Speaking of accents -- there are also geo-specific attitudes. Here's one, in a message I received from a sister-in-law:

'We, in Ireland , can't figure out why you people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States.

On one side, you had a pants-wearing female lawyer, married to another lawyer who can't seem to keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary against a lawyer, who goes to the wrong church, who is married to yet another lawyer, who doesn't even like the country her husband wants to run!

Now...On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate 'Mc', married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship !!! !!!!!! ?

What in God's name are ya lads thinkin' over there ? ! ? ! !

Unless you count my dad's funeral, the birth of my daughter or my mom's cancer surgery, I haven't had a legitimate vacation since 2002. I'm trying to work up some sympathy for you, 3Ring. Really, I am.

NNNGHHGHHHHH. /strains mightily.

Nope. No good.

I bet you're looking forward to it more than you're willing to admit. Have fun with the new gig!
Trout -- you need a REAL vacation. I advocate 3-4 per year, with 2 of those being a minimum of 1 week long.

/me sends much sympathy your way.

:( i don't work in an office. i have to wear running shoes because i have to chase and catch kids. i can't wear a dress. i've considered buying a head-protecting helmet. my job breaks down my spirit and turns my soul a darkened color.... i wish i could find something i like, with a boss i like (most important part) that allows me to at least sit on occasion.

it took me the whole summer to heal. and tomorrow, it all begins again.

woe is me.

Holy Crap!!! Is THAT what vacations are like!!?? How have I missed out on that? Now I AM feeling sorry for myself.

Seriously, I know I need one. It's tough to break away and I'm in an industry that doesn't exactly have a great reputation for the way it treats its employees - at least those in my position. That's just life. I knew that when i signed on, so I'm not going to start whining now.

Someday I'll take a break. Maybe next year. I sneak out early on a Friday every so often and I recently took a whole day off. Plus, I get regular holidays, like Christmas and July 4, etc. So it's not like I work 24/7/365. I'm with a pretty good firm now - unlike my previous ones, and I'll probably be able to take some time at some point.

Wow. What do you do? Work in a daycare or something? That sounds pretty bad. As many hours as I put in, at least I like my job (sometimes). Were'nt you applying for a desk job a while back? I thought you got one of those jobs.

Is this an opportune time to point out that in Sweden, my company gives me 6 weeks holiday (plus public holiday) and also has a "work account" scheme whereby every day worked gives a further 15 minutes towards holiday (=1 week extra for each year)? Or not?

I worked hard to get to this point - now I try to enjoy it. Every year we usually take 2 vacations of roughly a week each and 2 or 3 long weekend trips of 3-4 days each. I don't buy a lot of material things with my money - instead I travel with it.

I don't have any kids at home any more either, though we did start this schedule of vacations when the kids were in late middle school.
