MAJOR drama in the yard this morning.

we have 2 adult and 11 juvenile wild turkeys that come through about twice daily. they eat the bird seed and squirrel's corn i toss out, and they are cute as heck. they make little turkey noises and scratch the dirt for bugs, etc. just fun to watch.

one of the youngin's is significantly smaller than the rest, and it seems to stay very close to one of the adult hens. also, about 3 weeks ago a stray juvenile began trying to infiltrate the rafter, and it was quite interesting to see the steps taken as the group finally accepted it. there was some squabbling and racket, but generally now they seem to just ignore it, letting it feed with them and follow them around the forest... but it remains a step or two behind the last of the rafter, and feeds on the outskirts of the grouping.

the other day i saw it moving even slower than normal, and limping. it was left completely behind a few times, on its own, vulnerable. but alas, each day it appears again with the group, and yesterday i noticed the limp diminishing. but we had a full count of 14 turkeys, so i was glad for that.

so today, as usual, i counted.... 2 adults and 11 children. someone's missing, and it's not the new addition. i couldn't readily see the teeny one, but i barely had time to count them when suddenly two more adult turkeys came down the hill.

one hen came to alert and confronted them, but they remained at least 20 yards apart, and the 2 new adults halted and then relaxed and ignored the rafter. but, as happens, they also wanted to be corn fed, so they risked it and came right on down the hill, very close to the feeding zone.

well, all hell broke loose. every damm turkey went on full charge at those two, chased them up the hill, and from here all i could see was turkeys jumping and mock-flying and charging and running in every which direction and squaking and hollering and gobbling and jsut generally fighting like a bunch of girls. it was hysterical.

but guess who was front and center on the charge? who was the first to become fed up and just go nutty, chasing the two intruders away? why yes... it was limpy. what a loyal outsider. LOL

anyway, fortunately that's the lump sum of the drama in my life, and it didn't actually involve me. so life is good.

here is a pic of Prince Chester watching them as they were just coming in to feed, from about 2 weeks ago. they let him get very very close.... they even stalk him when he is stalking squirrels. they are very brave (and big in comparison) LOL you can see the bird seed and corn... he didn't stay long. the adults actually chase him away, and i'm sure it would hurt if he actually got pecked by one.

and another one as they were leaving .....

I wonder if it will be raining when I get to Oregon Wednesday morning. I haven't seen rain in about 6 months.

I stayed in SD for a week a couple of years ago, and it barely stopped raining.

What a great story! It must be great having stuff like that right in your yard. Actually we have a tiny tiny bit of undeveloped land behind our house (it's not ours) and we do get foxes, raccoons, possums and skunks, which is pretty cool. They mostly are active at night, although our next door neighbor found a whole family of foxes lying in the sun on her deck once.

We don't get anything here that causes any real harm this time of year. We can get serious flooding occasionally - like last year, but pretty much this time of year, we're good. Might have to batten down the hatches and try to stay dry, but it's nothing compared to what Florida is dealing with.

Besides, I've got a lot of work to do around the house. Being forced to stay inside is probably a good thing.

How cool to have critters so close by! We had a family of possum under our deck once- but that's about it except for ducks and the occasional egret wandering by.

/me waves back at Allie- yup - just rainy stuff so far :)

It wasn't, but to reveal more would be to dilute my obtuse reminiscence :)

When I've finished bestowing an entire summer's rainfall on Stockholm this week.

My rain-making knows no bounds. I managed to provoke the heaviest deluge Dusseldorf has ever seen when I flew in last week.

that's cool. in the 5 years i've been in this house, i've only seen 2 foxes.

last night, some family of critters climbed down a tree right outside my bedroom window, but i couldn't tell what they were cuz it was too dark. i saw what seemed to be a large cat in the shadows leading the way, but i think that was a feral cat who just happened to be there. then later, they scurried back up the tree. by the time i got up and got the light on, they were gone. i think i'll get my binoculars out and try to figure out what critters they were.

i also saw a skunk in the yard. do skunks live in trees?
