Maureen,

I like the way your mind works. Actually since I live there we have the pool to ourselves most of the time anyway I don't think your theory holds water.

I always like to see my friends having fun and I was disapointed that I would have to cancel.

"CX" (heh heh get it? holds water! heh heh I crack me up.)

Warning!! This is your Joke of the Day!!

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

We Must Stop This Immediately !

Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper . Groceries are heavier . And, everything is farther away. Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long our street had become!

And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones. They speak in whispers all the time! If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they're red in the face! What do they think I am, a lip reader?

I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age. On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am. I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn't even recognize me.

I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection well, REALLY NOW - even mirrors are not made the way they used to be!

Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days! You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the freeway in front of them. All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror.

Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days. Why else would they suddenly start labeling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20? Do they think no one notices? The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank. Do they think I actually "believe" the number I see on that dial? HA! I would never let myself weigh that much! Just who do these people think they're fooling?

I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on, but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: They've printed the phone books in such small type that no one could ever find a number in there!

All I can do is pass along this warning:
WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!

Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO WE CAN GET THIS CONSPIRACY STOPPED!

PS: I had to print this in a larger font size, because something has happened to my computer's fonts - they are smaller than they once were.

"CX" (getting old is hell)

And even nostalgia isn't what it used to be . . .

Amaranthim reminded me that I am essentially Heinleinian in my philosophies, with a little market huckster thrown in for good measure. I just reread "Stranger . . ." Maybe at the end of this week I will be wanting to be someoneelse, having reread "The Moon . . . "

Pep (Would that be "Mother Maureen"?)

Hah! I was fairly certain it was the Heinlein character, but then again, it could have been the bounty hunter from "Firefly" or perhaps a biblical reference to the son of Lamech and Adah, a brother of Jabal, a descendant of Cain -- the ancestor of all who played the lyre and pipe.

Or Jubal Anderson Early, a lawyer and Confederate Army general.

/me wonders if he has accidentally wandered into a Heinleinian community, whether the participants realise it or not.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Firefly character was named in homage - like the character Bester in Babylon5.

A Thumbnail Bio

38, single. Live in NW New Jersey, born and raised in New York City (Queens).
Soon to be Ex High School History Teacher. I'm not a computer person, before stumbling onto SL, I wouldn't be on line for more than an hour a day, and not everyday. Never did any online things like Chat Rooms or Forums even.

I came across SL purely by accident while snowed in one weekend, shopping online. It was mentioned in some article, I don't remember where. I was bored so I gave it a try.
I don't do any content creation or scripting , none of that stuff interests me. I defiitely am not interested in working in SL. I'm just a Tourist.

As far as interests go, I obviously am into History, especially WWII. Although not a geek, I do love Sci Fi, preferring Star Trek to that "Other" bunch of movies. I love anything that flies. I adore baseball, am a huge New York Mets Fan, and also love NASCAR.

I love buying shoes in RL as much as I do in SL, and am a clotheshorse in every sense of the word. And I play the Piano.

Uh, hi again. I'll delurk once more to answer Pep's question because so many of you know me well in SL and why not tell you something about my RL too?

I am 36, Jewish, born and raised in NYC but have now lived in Boston for many years. I am a patent attorney with a background (previous life) as an experimental physicist. I am married to a sweet, awesome person who is also a physicist. He also happens to be a man, although he is the only person of that persuasion I've ever been involved with, and as a general matter of ogling/fantasizing preference I still very much think of myself as a lesbian. Yeah, labels are stupid. :)

I am a dilettante and geek of all trades; lately (for the last three years) I've been weirdly obsessed with Indian pop culture and I've learned to speak Hindi a little and watched (and blogged about) hundreds of Hindi movies. My other serial interests include and have included linguistics, baseball, magic (the prestidigitation kind), cooking, and other stuff.

I joined SL last November when my brother (whom many of you know as Yisroel) was visiting me for Thanksgiving. Yisroel had been in world for a couple of months and he thought it would be fun to get me on as well. SL is still a great way for Yis and I to keep up, since we live in different states - it's made us closer in a lot of ways. But it's also become something entirely separate for me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity it's given me to meet so many awesome people and to live out my fantasy of running a coffee house. :)

CX- I LOVE Tunnel in the Sky!! That one has been a fave since I was a kid! Right up there with Podkayne of Mars- both endings, though I cried like a little girl (well I was at the time) at the sad ending.
Although his politics are pretty clear through out all his works, Space Troopers was very slap in the face considering especially the time frame- read that for some spectacular jingoism and rah rah rah stuff. Like many of his works, it did not go over well at the time.

Also picked up Requiem yesterday- a tribute to him upon his death.

Good morning, Threadies. Good morning, forums.

It's past the time Verizon swore they'd have phone service back, and my home is still unconnected to the world by phone or internet.

/me is very grumpy.
