Does anyone know what time the show is going to be on tomorrow? I'm guessing it's evening, which means most of Europe will be safely logged out and avoiding the impending disaster, and hopefully LL will work through the night to get things working again for us European players by the time we want to log on again.
I hope that the build team have remembered to turn on no build, no push etc ... because it's bound to be a griefer magnet .
A thought just occurred to me ... with all these islands set up for the CSI thing, would that be the reason behind the lull in new regions being put up for general sale - simply lack of capacity at the Lab?
I guess the flipside is that we can look forward to hundreds of regions becoming available cheaply in a few months time when it all crumbles into a desolate wasteland like so many other commercial builds. I'll drop by and have a look when the fuss has died down (probably Friday morning), to see what it's like there.
I guess of course nobody really considered the fact that the whole build and concept will be rather meaningless to the 70% of the SL population from a non-US location who haven't seen the programme on the TV so won't have a clue what they're looking for... a notecard explaining the plot is probably far too much to expect.

From: Cherry Czervik Is it true that there is going to be a CSI aducah? Or is someone pulling my leg? My money is on the latter! Of all the cities in the US you pull out Paducah? That's like me referencing Wootton-Bassett

From: Broccoli Curry Doesn't surprise me, ESC get too much preferential treatment already to the detriment of many other far more talented individuals and groups in SL. I've heard that rumor often and was honestly wondering if there was any evidence to support it. To the best of my knowledge, if ESC has had any advantage approaching favoritism it comes from long-standing interaction with LL and not because of any FIC-ness. This is pretty standard fare in business at large: many firms choose to deal with firms they have had successful interactions with in the past (so do people, for that matter). I've seen ESC/SLB get borked by LL breaking essential functionality, but I've not seen patronage or nepotism. I've certainly seen claims that there is, but the most strident source of them has ummm... credibility issues. This isn't a challenge, just a curiosity, and it kind of irks me when fabricated rumors are circulated enough to the reach the point of fixation. disclaimer: I have no connection with ESC or its members. I thought SLB was pretty nifty but didn't like that they let it languish; I though sheepbot was a maybe good idea marred by horrible execution. In other words, I have as much reason to like them as to not. But I don't think unsubstantiated rumors about any person or organization serves anyone.

From: Gordon Wendt My response ot the lindens as a SL mentor is that sorry, I volunteer to help with the LL orientation and help islands, if ESC and their ilk want to do something they can pay for their own cronies ot help people who show up, I'll continue spending my time helping regular residents on the main islands and suggest that all other mentors do the same. I think that's a pretty narrow attitude, Gordon, especially since you're not getting paid by EITHER LL or ESC. Mentors volunteered to help newbies...why should it matter if they come in through the LL registration portal or ESC's? (Well, the details matter of course...it's going to be tough to help someone when you don't know what their user interface looks like. There ought to've been more training, I'll give you that.) But the idea here is that hopefully some of the folks who come in as a result of the CSI episode will like it here and decide to stay a while. We should make them welcome.

Its the same thing. The legend of the FIC often distorts the fact that the FIC meant the group that got favored treatment due to long standing interaction with LL. LL playing favorites with their friends basically. ------------------------------------------- In this case though I doubt its any particular favoritism. This is a lot of potential money and huge visibility. This is directly related to their efforts of making money via the corporate world. I think if some company wed never heard of had made a similar proposal LL would still have backed it up.

ESC and CBS have set up around 150 CSI-branded orientation islands. Anyone who downloads the CSI client from the site advertised in the show promo spots will go to those islands. ESC has also hired a substantial number of greeters/helpers for those islands. LL volunteers were notified because there will likely be some overflow, as 1) new residents teleport away from the CSI islands and end up wandering the mainland, or 2) people see "Second Life", but don't get the URL for the CSI-ESC site and sign up through the regular SL signup page (with the regular SL client). I know that most non-LL volunteer groups are expecting a significant bump in new players.

You just did comment. Unless you have an older account you might not recognize the FIC reference. The FIC debate was violent and one of the reasons the general forums was closed. Basically though the FIC was a label plastered on that group of early adopters though. And some later adopters (including one very opinionated one who came up with the label) felt disadvantaged due to the fact that they were there.

From: Bodhisatva Paperclip Very interesting. I'd forgotten about the CSI episode and was planning on being on later for the first time in a few days. Plan: building and landscaping. It'll be interesting to see what if anything happens in my quiet little corner of Boomerangia. Wouldn't the most rabid fans of CSI already have the heads-up on this episode and perhaps look into SL on their own? It may not be a large percentage of the ones that attempt to get into SL because of the show, but it should account for some. Well, I checked the CSI forums at the CBS website yesterday, and found only two threads about it - one with a few responses, and the other just asking where a person signs up. If that's any indication of fans and their heads-up. coco

coco Those new people have no idea about any of that though. New players who actually earn money (they watch TV at least and aren't likely in their mother's basements) cant be all bad.

From: Sling Trebuchet ]]] • ESC & CBS project 2 to 4M will hit the CSI -SL website, and about 200K will complete registration, with about 150K logging in • Max traffic is estimated to be ~3K logins/minute • Land: • ESC has requested 416 regions to handle the traffic: 208 Orientation Islands and 104 each of NY1 and NY2, the two content islands ... 6) What do I tell people if there's a lot of lag or problems? Linden Lab is pleased that CSI has brought so many new people to Second Life. However, the traffic has exceeded our expectations and we're working hard to address any issues and provide the best experience for everyone. Since the CSI content will not be changing soon, they can come back later when there are less people in Second Life. If there are significant problems, Linden Lab will post announcements to the Second Life Blog.
... It looks like LL's marketing muppets have found a way to introduce about 150,000 people to an incredibly laggy experience - and subject the loyal userbase to months of frustration.
What kills me about that is they have worked out to a T how many they expect. Yet they have also provided a cover story, for lag or problems, that there were "way more than they expected." That's sort of, almost . . . a lie. coco

What I am curious about is if you can visit those islands without using the Sheep viewer. Interesting to see what their version of New York looks like. From: Kitty Barnett Just peeked at the 4 sims and left feeling entirely unimpressed . Heh, finally ask that question and it ends up sitting below your comment. Did you enter using the Sheep viewer?

You can just tp over and wander around. If you want to actually participate you have to pick up the HUD ("toolbar" at the landing spot (pick the left most sim of the 4). (Actually just realized that I didn't really see anything that would qualify as "Orientation" for the newbies. Did I just miss it?)

Cocoanut: Why wouldn't you work for the ESC? They are a superb company, and have branched out all over the place (even other virtual worlds).
If you have a skill-set they need (building, programing, etc), you can make great money--some people even support themselves in RL off of steady ESC work.
There are a hella' lot of smart and talented folk at ESC. That's why they are where they are today.
They aren't hiring right now though. Boo hoo.

coco Coco - can I steal this quote? There are a few people in RL to whom I would like to say, "I wouldn't work for you for free if you paid me". Then I'd liek to wait in silence and see if they figured it out. Can someone give me cliff notes as to what this means? Is the Grid going to be a disaster tonight? I have very important screwing around, wasiting time and playing to do. I'm busy tomorrow night and won't be on, so it would be much more convenient for me if the network changed its lineup so that the Grid exploded tomorrow instead of today. Seriously, what do we expect to see tonight, realistically?

Is that all a few million $ buys you contentwise? . hmm i wonder if that's because they were designing for low-lag (and maybe low prim) so they could fit more avatars in? ESC's other SL game, I am Legend, has great NYC builds ... laglaglag tho ...
