Did you get these notecards? <----- that is my question.

Because I didn't.

Here are the notecards, written by Glenn Linden, and being "passed around" SL now, according to other SL forums.

I didn't get them, and I figure that must be because I'm not a volunteer. But I feel it is full of information that we could all benefit from, even if we are just Second Life residents:

_______

About CSI

The Oct 24th episode of CSI:NY will include SL as part of the show, and actively promote viewers logging into SL to help solve the mystery. The show has 12M viewers, and expects to drive as many as 2M to Second Life as a result of the show and follow-on advertising and activities. Electric Sheep (ESC) is the Solution Provider working with the producers of CSI:NY.

Event details
• Date: 10/24/07
• Event:
• CSI:NY 10/24 episode will include about 15 minutes of video filmed in SL. The CSI team will chase a villain into SL and pursue clues left behind in SL. Second Life mentioned in episode description for 10/24 on CBS CSI website
• The show will include at least 2 30 second promo spots pointing people to ESC's CSI RegAPI website
• CSI (Thu nite) and CSI:Miami (Fri nite) may also include the spots
• CBS/CSI will continue to promote the SL connection through the weekend (10/28)
• • And more
• CSI/ESC are planning to add new content about every 6 weeks, which will require updating those regions still in use
• CSI:NY episode in Feb. will conclude the story when the CSI team will catch the villain from clues found in SL.
• CSI:NY Show Schedule details
• Satellite 4-5 PM PT/7-8 PM ET.
• Eastern: 7 PT/10 ET.
• Hourly airings (at least two - CST and EST may air at the same time) between Eastern & Western
• Western 10 PT/1 ET.
• Hawaii 1 AM PT/4 AM ET
• What:
• ESC will provide registration (using the Registration API), have them chose from a set of avatars, and deliver them to the CSI OIs. They will also provide inventory, clothing and a HUD.
• Registrants through CSI webpage will get a special viewer designed by ESC
• Who:
• The show expects 12 to 16M viewers
• ESC & CBS project 2 to 4M will hit the CSI -SL website, and about 200K will complete registration, with about 150K logging in
• Max traffic is estimated to be ~3K logins/minute
• Land:
• ESC has requested 416 regions to handle the traffic: 208 Orientation Islands and 104 each of NY1 and NY2, the two content islands
• CSI Trailers on YouTube
• Anthony Zuiker talking about creating the episode
• CSI:NY Second Life trailer from CBS

______

Volunteer Q&A
1) Where is CSI?
In Second Life, Residents should be pointed to CSINY Orientation East1 [a URL was given for Electric Sheep Company here, but the lack of forum formatting messes up scrolling when I leave it in here] Even experienced SL users should be sent to the Orientation Island because visitors to CSI need a special HUD to interact with some of the content on the CSI islands. If at all possible, people should use the SLURL rather than just teleporting, because it incorporates load balancing and is more likely to get them to an available Orientation Island.

2) Help
People coming from the show will be registering through the CSI website, which has them download the ESC viewer. That viewer has a significantly different UI than the Linden Lab viewer. For support for the CSI viewer, they can go here: [url given for ESC's OnRez website given here] (Help in the viewer links to this). This includes support for Search, Communication (Chat, voice), Inventory, Map, Landmarks, and other functions mediated by the viewer.
For support for Second Life, such as groups, friends, land, building, etc., people registering through CSI will all be Basic accounts, and will have access to our Basic support at [url given for support at second life] - the Knowledge Base and Solution Finder, plus Basic tickets.
Some people may simply go to the Second Life.com website. They will see an ad for CSI that will point them back to the CSI Registration webpage. If they register through the Second Life webpage, they will have the Linden Lab viewer and will need help finding the CSI islands and getting the HUD. In this case, they'll also need to be pointed to our support page for viewer problems.

3) How do you tell which Viewer people have?
Besides the different look - the ESC viewer looks more like a browser - they should be able to find out in the Help Menu. The SL Viewer Help/About shows "Second Life 1.18.x" followed by the date of release. The ESC Viewer will say "OnRez 1.18.x"

4) How long will the CSI islands be in Second Life?
CSI will have ongoing activities on the CSI Islands through Feb. 2008. The activities will be updated every few weeks to continue the story. CSI is expecting to see significant registrations occurring from the time of the show through the weekend.

4) Should I hang out at CSI?
The best time to visit CSI yourself is next week, as they're promoting it thru Sunday. Please leave access for the visitors from CSI.

5) Where's the best place to help?
Linden OIs and Help are the best place to assist people looking for CSI who've come in from the Linden Lab registration and need assistance finding the CSI islands.

6) What do I tell people if there's a lot of lag or problems?
Linden Lab is pleased that CSI has brought so many new people to Second Life. However, the traffic has exceeded our expectations and we're working hard to address any issues and provide the best experience for everyone. Since the CSI content will not be changing soon, they can come back later when there are less people in Second Life. If there are significant problems, Linden Lab will post announcements to the Second Life Blog.

7) How can I find out more about this?
Go to the CSI:NY website, where there are trailers and information about the episode [url given for CBS website here].

You are right, they were passed out the the volunteers. It was just easier that way. It is a good idea to have them posted like this. However, for the most part, as long a the grid stays up, no one should notice anything.

I got the notecard but since I have no idea what CSI is I trashed it. Is it some TV show I need to be watching?

Its the latest craze Police drama show -

Concentrating on semi-realistic forensic science.

The original is on on Thurs - CBS and is set in Las Vegas

Its spawned 2 official spin offs - Miami on Mon nights, and New York on wednesdays

As well as a couple of sort of spin offs like Criminal Minds, Numbers and NCIS which also focus on the science type crime fighting stuff.

The CSI New York is the one with the Second Life Episode on tomorrow night with a Second Life online in game tie in.

Thanks Colette. Someday, I swear, I will begin watching television like the rest of the world. I used to watch the cooking channel and discovery if that counts.

I saw the previews for tomorrow nights show tonight. Basically its some killer who kills avatars and then kills the players type hype.

I imagine there will be the convenient everyone involved is in NYC plot device.

Also the preview seems to have this lame "Log off now" drama moment, like the game will trap someone.

I guess well see if the actual show is any better than the previews

I think NCIS was the first one of this crop of shows to do the MMO murder thing.

McGee is "elflord" or something in some Everquest type game.

Denozo was still making fun of him for it on the show two weeks ago if I remember correctly.

So quite why is a special browser needed? Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen to me, all these newbies needing help and nobody able to help them because they have some funny third party browser.

How could Linden Lab allow such a big project to be tied in with a non standard, non supported, unofficial third party browser?

It's either going to be the best idea they ever had or the worst. (From a marketing viewpoint, not from current residents viewpoint) I can only hope they are more prepared for this than we can imagine. We'll know over the next few weeks I'd guess.

Actually, LL has nothing to do with this. It is part of the grand plan with the open source. They don't want to deal with things like code, support, updates, etc. They want others to do all the hard stuff for them. Also, there are many 3rd part viewers already out there, the difference is that this one may actually work better then LL's.

The thing that seems to me that is most surprising is

"• ESC & CBS project 2 to 4M will hit the CSI -SL website, and about 200K will complete registration, with about 150K logging in
• Max traffic is estimated to be ~3K logins/minute"

That is a lot of log-ins!

Dunno anything about this TV thing, but this paragraph jumped out at me. "CSI HAS brought so many new people to SL. However, the traffic has exceeded out expectations"? That implies they are already here, no? Could that explain some of the problems some of us have been having? Or is this another LL premature missive? And, in that case, should we really expect a huge influx over the next few days?

Oh, and has anyone mentioned the skies falling yet? :p

The notecards where passed off to the mentors and other volunteers. So, what you quoted was a canned reply to the question.

No?
Thought not.

Resolved.

It looks like LL's marketing muppets have found a way to introduce about 150,000 people to an incredibly laggy experience - and subject the loyal userbase to months of frustration.

Whatever about "FIX IT", I do think that LL should address the underlying grid traffic issues before inviting a high-profile flood of new accounts.
If the experience is laggy, the resulting media exposure is really going to hurt LL.
They are playing with fire - killing the goose - cooking it on the fire.

"..they can come back later when there are less people in Second Life."
Yeah :(

My response ot the lindens as a SL mentor is that sorry, I volunteer to help with the LL orientation and help islands, if ESC and their ilk want to do something they can pay for their own cronies ot help people who show up, I'll continue spending my time helping regular residents on the main islands and suggest that all other mentors do the same.

I imagine the hype machine is churning out numbers that will fall short of their mark, as usual. I'm not a fan of the 2 CSI spinoffs, preferring the original, so I'll pass on this. It will be interesting to see how the episode will fare against the World Series which starts tonight in Beantown.

I still firmly believe that 'open source' was a bad move.

Are ESC providing support lines for their wierd viewer, or are LL going to have to try and figure out what client you're using as well as the problem?

Where are the volunteers coming from for the orientation experience?

Likewise, I'm a fan of the original CSI but only tune into the spinoffs if I need a laugh especially at the Sunglasses of Justice. I will be watching this Ep though, but not until tomorrow. I have a feeling I will pointing and laughing a lot.

The only realistic bit about CSI is most of the techniques they use are real and they use the proper 'forensic' machines for analysis. In the real world you do not turn up to a crime scene in designer jeans and stilletoes. Well maybe you would in a snip, but you would get changed.

Sorry went off on a tangent there!
