Did you notice that Magellan's status has been updated on that page?

Does that mean he has the Measles?!?!?!

Erm...I don't know about measles (he doesn't seem the type to keep up on his vaccinations though). But in the "Former Lindens" section it says "Not officially retired, but blog updates just petered out. Recently spotted."

Perhaps this is old news? Are there shots for inter-world jumping? Because Spore looks contagious.

Could this be a breadcrumb?

I had a funny dream last night, and I hesitate to mention it, but Magellan was in it. In this dream he was sitting on a metal-bound wooden seachest in a small boat that was being rowed - or moving, anyway. It was nighttime, and ships were moored all around.

There was an engraved metal plate on the chest that said "The Leon," and after a bit someone pointed to a ship and said, "There's the Leon." Magellan didn't say anything. He was chained to the chest, though.

I remember seeing a photo just recently of a new area that was to to be gridded by the Lindens soon (maybe already has) and in it there was a ship anchored in a small harbor. Could that be The Leon? Does anyone know about this new area and where it might be? There was also another photo of a new area with a space station featured.

Ha! Found it! This shows the ship i was talking about. The post indicates that the land is Linden-owned. Gonna have to go check it out!

http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/business-land-economy/8523-new-second-life-sims-past-7.html#post406586

The region is called "Castle Valeria" and is mostly a small island situated midway between the continents of Corsica and Nautilus in a navigable shipping lane. The ship in the picture is a "VOC Merchant Ship," whatever that means, and is called the "Explorer II." It was built by Crazy Mole and owned by Governor Linden. There is a small tavern nearby... I'll have to check that out later to see if there is any evidence of Magellan to be found. The ship is docked at this location, Castle Valeria (39, 75, 24). No sign of a ship with the name, "The Leon," unfortunately.

That region name sounds familiar. I think this is one of the new sims that LL is renting out.

edit: yep

____ Linden: so.. have you guys seen the two new DPW builds?
____ Linden: so..there is Castle Valeria.. an old castle build which is availablefor rent for events

I just did an in-depth search of that castle and island. No sign of Magellan, but I did find a secret passage in the castle leading to the dungeon. We can all pray that Magellan hasn't been there.

The ship looks like the ship in my dream. It isn't called the Leon, though - maybe that was some kind of dream-twisted clue. Leon - noel - lone... I don't know.

Magellan, I miss you. :-(

A possible unrelated aside, I happened upon this photo on Snapzilla some time back...

http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=226

It's way old, but who knows?

Wow, Mari! That is quite a find! Not unrelated at all I don't think. That's obviously a message related to Magellan.. that's his mug taped to part of it.

Here is a copy of that photo taken and uploaded to Snapzilla on February 28, 2005:

And Hamlet's photo caption alludes to him as well:
From: someone
BLOODY RASH, SIR! Hamlet Linden arrives to his office in Shipley to discover that a madman has announced plans to follow in his footsteps, and other brave (foolish?) souls who have traversed the in-world continents!

Here is a closeup of the map and message from that photo. I tried to enhance the image as best I could.. I'm sure someone else with more experience with that can do a much better job. Maybe I should take it over to ARMORD Lab and see if Marcos' Spectroanalyser can make more sense of it?

I can't make out the writing... but that's Hamlet's photo taped to the upper left corner, Magellan's in the middle and, I think, Cubey Terra's in the lower right... what does HE have to do with this? If that's Cubey, is he the "madman" that sent the message and did he have plans to follow in Magellan's (and/or Hamlet's) footsteps. Or is Magellan the madman? (Both more likely!)

What can you folks make of that? We definately need to talk to Hamlet more about this and see what he remembers about it. Cubey also, if that is indeed his picture.

p.s. There must be a clean copy of this message somewhere!

That was about the time Cubey led a walk around the perimeter of the grid. I walked with many others as he led us on a march that took many hours, on St Valentine's Day '05. The sun was a heart :-D It was great fun but the banlines were a problem.

Hamlet walked around the grid much eartlier, when the grid was smaller.

Magellan, of course, was the first explorer.

Ah yes... that makes sense. I seem to remember Cubey making an announcement about that expedition. And I recall you, he and others walking through Cowell at that time as part of that Walk-Around-The-Grid. Hamlet's earlier trek brought him and his party through Rodeo where they stopped for a rest at the Lookout above Rodeo Bay.

Here's what I could find of CUbey's 2005 exploration:

http://www.cubeyterra.com/2005/02/going-walkabout.php

http://www.cubeyterra.com/2005/02/going-walkabout-part-deux.php

This would be *quite* the trek, even by today's standards! I dunno if it get us closer to Magellan, however.

More Magellan News!
10-19-2008 03:46
I was looking around on the map today, and found an unusual circle on one of the ocean sims. I went there and found what appeared to be a place where a large hole had been dug and partially filled in. Nearby I found a wierd floating platform with a crane attached named Borer Launch Barge. It's owned by Michael Linden. This is at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Weiland/191/56/23. Nearby, I also found a submerged, rusted-out trolley car by Michael Linden (has he made anything that doesn't crash?)http://slurl.com/secondlife/Weiland/191/56/23. South of there, I found an enormous new island full of ancient builds. I flew around the perimeter of this island, noting many underwater ruins (and got distracted by a ridable sea turtle), until I found a large temple covered in dolphin statues at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nautilus%20-%20Byth/4/193/25. This is beautiful and well worth exploring. Further along, I found the real reason for this post: a new crash site located at http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nautilus%20-%20Mysehi/105/36/24. This is an Atomic Boring Machine and obviously related to Michael Linden's floating barge. There was no sign of Magellan, but inside the ship are some relatively fresh sandwiches and some not empty liquor bottles, so he hasn't gotten far. You can even sit in the control seat and view a slideshow of some of his discoveries. You can play with the controls, but beware the red button. The big, red, shiny, candy-like button. If it wasn't bad, they wouldn't have made it red, would they?

I have not yet explored the interior of the island, but we should begin some expeditions soon!

It would seem that Magellan took a cue from the moles, and went underground!

Amazing site, an yes, I do believe it's the interpid explorer's! I spotted some hair near the firepit, and need to analize it further, but I do tink it's his!

There are some curious photos on the wall inside the borin' machine, as well as a map!

Yikes-- I just headed over to Weiland to look at these sites (the platform is extremely tippy) and crashed right away. Seems the area is still somewhat unstable-- I'll have to be careful!

Whew-- I'm back online and exploring the area. Underwater at Nautilus - Bomilcar 44/190, there are a number of ruins, plus some glowing crystals and a buried statue of Poseidon! Very exciting. There are also sharks, so I'm moving on quickly...

Edit: Wow!! When the borer launching barge stood still long enough for me to check it out closer, I saw that the owner is Magellan Linden! How thrilling!

Exciting News!
10-19-2008 16:03
Mari just IM'd me about this new development. Very interesting! Sounds like it might be time for another Explorers meeting soon. Would be good to see everyone again and get caught up on all the activity. I've been busy the last few days, looking into a problem that has cropped up in the forest, and would have missed out on this news if it hadn't been for Mari's message.

Magellan had left some cryptic messages at his campsite in Squall... "Follow me if you can... Follow me if you dare." I wonder what's in store for us now?
