And some rare nouns do use an apostrophe in plural. Mostly when the noun is an acronym which has achieved the ubiquity of a word. "I have several CD's and DVD's all over my floor" is correct. Also, "the 80's" is correct.
I always wondered about this one. Sometimes I will use an apostrophe and sometimes just add the lowercase "s" because that is still distiguishable. Is the acronym always supposed to be capitalized or is "cd", "dvd", and "pc" okay? I have seen them written in lowercase, but seeing it written does not necessarily make it okay.? If lowercase is acceptable, then you definitely need the apostrophe before the "s".

.... "dummie nipple". .....
I must ask -- a "dummie nipple" would be what exactly?

From: Brenda Connolly
The phrase we would use up here would be.."Cop a Mope".
What is a "mope"? The only time I have seen the words "cop a" used in a phrase is in "cop a feel".

I absolutely hate affect/effect - I will never ever get those straight.

The real question should be why does Phil hate pets?

oh yeah, thanx for the reminder Lindal. Since we're discussing language...WTF is an "asshat"??? Anyone know the entomology of that "word"?

/me puts her hand up, thinks asshat is her fault, I used it in another thread! Best way to explain, kind of a cross between an asshole and a tosser (or wanker - not sure if that means something very bad over the pond). It's a quirky English word used by some of us oldies which is almost cussing, but not quite.

My pet peeves - when people type "K" when they mean "OK", and use of the word "prolly", for probably. Is "prolly" in the English Dictionary yet?

Languages historically have not remained static, Old English and middle English are a far cry from modern English.

I only see it as a problem if I can't follow what someone is saying. If someone puts then in the wrong place, it's generally straight forward to work out what they meant.

But then I've seen people, whose first language isn't english, learn the wrong words, and use them wrongly.

Flammable... Inflammable
Irregardless

It worries me more that the Firefox spell check doesn't trip over Irregardless.. so I've apparently spelled that correctly.

I've been thinking about this all day. (ok, well, not ALL day)

I care much more about this issue in RL - where how a letter or a contract is constructed often has serious RL implications. In SL? eh. Yes, a gifted or clever writer can make me chuckle a bit more, make my heart beat faster, and, perhaps, impress upon me not only the words but some sense of the tone or underlying feelings of the writer. However: as long as I can decipher (easily) what someone is saying, either here in the forums or inworld, I am happy. I just want to enjoy the conversations! :)

However saying that, I do have one pet peeve .. people who use the word Lite instead of Light. ie: It's getting lite outside. ...
When discussing the light of a room or outside, I always spell it "light". However, I will go back and forth between "hilight" and "hilite".

I think that was Tom Brokaw. He turned huh-RASS-ment into HARE-is-ment and everyone just went along with him. Now we're stuck with it.
I am stubborn. I still say huh-RASS-ment.

Hehe...I am not sure where I saw this or where the joke started, but all I can think about when I see this is someone like Groucho Marx saying "Her ass meant nothing to me."

Edit: just heard that the joke was quite popular during the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas.

"Prolly" is dialect. Not correct English, but useful for conveying a conversational tone.

I've picked up "K" or "kk" here in SL...it seems to be common shorthand. It's also an abbreviation that I've heard amateur radio operators using...even in voice, although it originated as a Morse Code shorthand, used either to express agreement or as a substitute for "over".

I always thought "asshat" was a semi-polite euphemism for ass*ole. Sounds like I was close, but not spot on. Still, I liked it the first time I saw it.

and it's not Wala! it's Voila!!!!! Please, please please!

As in "you add the chicken to the mixture, and Voila! you have soup!

And Oriented, not orientated.

And so many more things I just don't have the time or inclination to list here.

If English is your native language, there is no excuse for poor grammar. Sorry...It's how I feel.

If English is not your native language, then I can understand making mistakes. Speaking as someone who is only fluent in one language, I applaud anyone who can converse in more than their native language. What you might miss in grammar and spelling, you make up for in your efforts! :)

I'm gonna disagree with one of these.

It is Orientated if you are British and Oriented if you are American. There are subtle differences between the two languages.

I heard Asshat in RL from a friend in Australia years ago, I've always loved it.

I hate to admit, but seeing 'prolly' and 'puter' instead of computer makes my teeth grate.

Please don't hate me....but in the end I've learned just to accept it all, as long as I can understand the message. But my hatred for chat speak will never go away.
