From: Tyrrell Dalgleish Wildefire, doh... um let me see last count none. But, um how many hairdresser fighter pilots are there. hmm, how many florist dental nurses are there?
Wot a dumb question!
And that precisely is the point. Your goody two shoes grammar doesn't make up for your abject stupidity. Cathy Ireland, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, ... They may not all have an official title of CEO, but they're all highly successful business women. The % of the population that looks really attractive is small, as is the % of the population that seems really smart. The combination of those two leads to the stereotype that you are repeating, but it doesn't make it true.

From: Wildefire Walcott A pet peeve is just an annoyance Since this thread seems to be all kinds of stuck on semantics, I'm going to point out that the title says 'pet HATE, ' not 'peeve.' That suggests it's something more than an annoyance, as well as making it seem like everyone who rushed to post their own examples is agreeing with said hatred. With the exception of a few people who were obviously playing around, the thread has seemed mean-spirited to me from the start. We're not being graded and this isn't a professional setting, so as long as people can figure out what someone else is saying without excessive effort, it really REALLY doesn't matter if they're following all of the English 101 rules.

Another interesting language tidbit I learned from the forums:
At one point I noticed that Mari's forum title said Feted Inner Child, an obvious play on the Fetid Inner Core (who may or may not exist). I thought it was very uncharacteristic of her to misspell fetid, and I didn't know the word feted, so I looked them both up to learn the difference. Those two words may not be used much, but it's a big mistake to interchange them.

I've been thinking about the asshat thing. Two questions -
Firstly, what is the plural of ass (as in backside ass and not donkey ass)? Asses or Ass's (although that derives something belonging to the singular ass)??
Secondly, which is correct, asshole or arsehole??

From: MortVent Charron Plus you got to remember : The united states, screwing with the queen's english for over 200 years! We've invented new weeponz for uur arsinal. Some school districts have stopped teaching English grammar for political reasons. It seems some eddikatorz have trouble deciding which form of English is "proper", and whether picking a form is racist. This dates back to the 1970s in some areas. The result is people who can't read common English well enough to understand the documents they sign, and college graduates who sound like morons. (Of course, for some that IS natural.) I figure that in another 20 years, the world will belong to those who can construct a proper sentence. No one else who speaks English will be able to think their way out of a wet plywood prim.

"your" and "you're" are all time favourites.
as far as learning english, 'pull, pole, pill, pool' is a seemingly insurmountable learning lesson. the pronunciation or those words is so slight they sound like the same word.

To the OP... Shouldn't "americans" be capitalised (yes, it's spelt with an "s" ? And, to be grammatically correct, you should have typed "two" rather than "2". Sloppy, very sloppy

Well then... where to start. Okay... where did Phil attack me in this thread???? Okay, I was used as example of people learning a wrong use of certain words, but I can hardly see that as an attack. My use of the English language is better then of some native speakers I see write here, but of course I do make mistakes. Probably a lot. But when my name is used as an example of one of those mistakes, I can hardly see an attack in that. Is that because I lack education, or am I just too stupid? Everyone is entitled to make mistakes, be it a typo or be it a wrong use of a word. The only thing I do dislike is the abuse of a language, on purpose. Using chat words, called msn language in my country. Trying your best to write down a posting and making some errors in that process, is nothing to be blamed for though. To wrap it up: please, if you think I am under attack, leave it up to me to fight back. In the past I have shown to be quite capable of doing so. Using my name to fight out a grudge over someone is kind of... well fill that out yourself. Don't want to lower myself to a personal attack Feel free to edit for mistakes.

From: Marcel Flatley ...I was used as example of people learning a wrong use of certain words... since this thread won't die anyway, I'd just like to point out that Phil has now taught you the incorrect usage of words as well. "wrong use" "used wrongly" and "pet hate" belong on the list as much as anything else.

But when my name is used as an example of one of those mistakes, I can hardly see an attack in that. Phil was pointing out between the lines, that you victimized, non-native English speaking people, are learning from uneducated, forum trailer trash. You are being duped into ignorance by illiterate "americans" and thus becoming like one of them. For instance in your sentences above, you say "My use of the English language is better ****then ****...and this makes you uneducated like the "americans" according to Phil who says: "It may be harsh, but I tend to see native english (caps needed) speakers, who use those words wrongly, as lacking in education. " Take this up with Phil, since it is he who chose to include your victimization, in the original post, under the guise of excusing your "lack of education," by blaming others who he deems uneducated from his superior pulpit. An education in satire, is also hard to gain on these forums, where many people are use to, the most trivial kinds of endles satirical chatter, but only some who can detect, obscurantist, mysteries posted by those souless beings who minimize the use of these demon emoticoms. With a flip of a switch a hostile post become a cloying and silly one (giggle) Insert picture of Kitten right here

1. I've changed the thread's title to "peeve" instead of "hate". Although there was nothing wrong with using the word "hate" (anyone who thinks it's wrong to hate something is very much mistaken), it's more of a peeve with me than a hate. (added: the title didn't change) 2. "Americans" should have been capitalised in my post, but there's no point in telling me about it, as though the thread is about grammar - it isn't. Anyone can pick holes in almost all posts. 3. Using "2" instead of "two" is perfectly correct. They are interchangable. I said earlier that I usually use the numeral so that it's just a little bit easier for non-native english speakers - not all of them are fluent. 4. The use of the word "wrong", when meaning "incorrect", is correct. E.g. "it's the wrong answer". It doesn't imply any sense of morality. The words are interchangable. "Incorrect" is a softer way of saying "wrong", and "mistaken" it is a softer way of saying "wrong" (e.g. "you are wrong / you are mistaken" , but they are all correct. The thread was about 2 words that some native english speakers think are the correct words, but they are not. They are totally the wrong words, and I've seen non-native english speakers pick them up. They are not like the differences between "wrong" and "incorrect" - those are just nuances. The 2 words that I wrote about are simply wrong.

The English language and the manner in which our emotional responses are so entwined in its web really lies at the foundation of my real career. One of the key issues for second language (and first language) speakers of English is in employing tenses correctly. That strange word "gotten" is rather disconcerting - its almost archaic. I suspect that it was used in the past when "get" or "got" had sexual connotations.
