ok, so how many 'hads' can you have in a row in a sentence for it still to make sense and be correct? Might as well get away from the 'I speak/write more better than what you do' bit...
Dunno, but I can write 5 repetitions of "that" in a row, in one sentence, at have it make sense.

I say that that "that" that that boy wrote is wrong :)

James, while John had had "had", had had "had had"; "had had" had had the approval of the grammar teacher...

So let's assume they were doing an exam, and they had to fill a gap in a sentence...

1) James filled the gap with 'had had'
2) John filled the gap with 'had'
3) The correct answer was 'had had'
4) The correct answer had the approval of the teacher

Clear as mud, I reckon.

Even for a native English speaker, that's a toughie to get one's head round! I've been sitting here saying it to myself to get comprehension!

:D

The best I could do was 5 ands - The signwrite being told to ensure that the spacing is equal between 'Jones and And, and And and Sons'.

Wonder if "Had" is a name anywhere in the world? Then it could be even longer.

My dad had a friend whose last name was Hadley, and everyone called him "Had". Good enough?

... The message is more important than the delivery, but the delivery has a huge effect on the message. I don't think anything negative about anybody who misuses words or who doesn't have perfect grammar - I'm as guilty as they are. The only time it gets to me is when the message is so poorly written that it is unintelligible. Then, I'm more like to ignore the post than judge the poster.

That first sentence is brilliant, Trout, and sums up my view in a nutshell.

Mac, please...nobody's slammin' you. I'm a charter member of the Grammar Police...and yet, I can't recall a single time I've read one of your posts and had a peeve, pet or feral, jump out at me.

Excellent! We have our own pedantic English thread.

And the winner is the first one who can actually make a post complaining about the language in someone else's post without making any errors?

Not possible, according to Skitt's Law.

Skitt's Law, a corollary of Murphy's Law, variously expressed as "any post correcting an error in another post will contain at least one error itself" or "the likelihood of an error in a post is directly proportional to the embarrassment it will cause the poster."

QUOTE]

After all is said and done, there are no real errors. When you take into account the differences between UK, US, Straylyun, Noo Zilland and Sood Efricken spoken english, there's no wonder people get confused.

And, here's a little trivia for you. More than one elf is "elfs", more than one dwarf is "dwarfs". The words dwarves and elves were invented, so to speak, by JRR Tolkein in his books.

Japanese has a brilliant "Buffalo buffalo" sentence too:

"There are two chickens in the back yard and two in the front yard": Uraniwa niwa ni wa niwa niwa ni wa niwatori.
