And please, for the love of God, learn proper use of plurals. If you have a word that ends in Y and you want to pluralize it, you add an IES at the end, and not a Y'S.
Example: I have fifty bunny's should actually read I have fifty bunnIES.
QUOTE]
Although, interestingly, Y's as a plural of Y, the letter, is correct and still slightly the preferred method (toss up - this one is headed IMO the other way - Ys will be the preferred method soon and both are acceptable now). Same, same with numbers, other than the use for decades or centuries, as in 1900s.

From: Whyspe Wylie ...My pet peeve is the overuse and misuse of quotes. People seem to have decided that they're used for emphasis. "Fresh" vegetables, "Quality" materials. Drives me nuts. ... QUOTE]
Quotes are properly used in those phrases, but usually to indicate that the adjective or adverb is not really correct, much as people use the finger-quote sign in conversation to indicate that it was what the person said, but not necessarily what was true.
I'm not sure that I have seen them used for just emphasis, but then, again, I probably assumed they were using them as above and blew right past the misuse. I'm guessing if it were their "fresh" vegetables, they didn't sell me any.

From: Phil Deakins Although there was nothing wrong with using the word "hate" (anyone who thinks it's wrong to hate something is very much mistaken) so you do in fact hate pets then? I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. /cries.

Is anyone else annoyed by advertisers' use of "Free Gift" ?
Are we so cynical that we must suspect a gift to have some cost attached unless someone assures us that it is, indeed, free?

With quotation marks, I usually use double quotes for actually quoting something or someone, and single quotes for hilighting words and phrases, but that's just my personal way of using them.

Thanks, Rebecca. I love learning new words. Of all the things mentioned in this thread so far the one I had never noticed is Phil's then/than substitution. To me that is just a perfectly understandable typo. It never occurred to me that anyone was confused about the meanings of the two words. And if they are it still falls pretty low on my list of things to worry about. From: Curtis Dresler From: Whyspe Wylie ...My pet peeve is the overuse and misuse of quotes. People seem to have decided that they're used for emphasis. "Fresh" vegetables, "Quality" materials. Drives me nuts. ...

I'm not sure that I have seen them used for just emphasis, but then, again, I probably assumed they were using them as above and blew right past the misuse. I'm guessing if it were their "fresh" vegetables, they didn't sell me any. I see this all the time and sometimes it gives me a little chuckle. But I tend to assume that the person who wrote the sign is not trying to be ironic and the vegetables likely are fresh.

From: Phil Deakins With quotation marks, I usually use double quotes for actually quoting something or someone, and single quotes for hilighting words and phrases, but that's just my personal way of using them. And I'll probably understand without considering it to be a problem but the only correct use of quotation marks is to indicate words that were spoken or written by a person being quoted. "Fresh" Vegetables does indeed mean that the freshness has been claimed but not proven. In the U.S. primary quotes use (" and (') is for a quotation within a quotation. eg Bob said, "The last last thing Sally said was, 'good-bye'." In the U.K. it's the opposite. Bob said, 'The last last thing Sally said was, "good-bye".' For emphasis you can use italics or CAPS or *asterisks* But lots of people do use quotes and most of us know what is meant. Maybe the then/than thing is just some people's personal way of using them?

From: Macphisto Angelus Knowing how much my posts have been under a microscope (I fall into many of the "pet peeves", etc in this thread) makes me sad. A failed product of my school system, a lazy student who felt socializing was more fun or simply an "uneducated" or "stupid" person simply for improper word phrasing. Well, I did not expect some of the people in this thread to flash their grammar forum cop badges. Thank God for my firefox spell check as already you would have seen 6 misspelled words in this post alone. What an idiot I must be, right? Wilde, this is not a blast at you but at the entire thread. I really had no clue all these pet peeves were so important to people that they needed to be brought out to shame some of us. Good God, people talk about how they are so damn accepting of things considered hot buttons in SL but on a fucking forum people who do not reach their superior intellect and grammar skills are "stupid". Well fuck that. Happy Mac is pretty surprised right now so excuse me for my language. Thanks for the grammar lessons in this thread.. and the bigger lesson some of us are walking away with too. Well said MacPhi, well said.

I don't think everyone in this thread was blasting people who make mistakes or whose grammar isn't perfect. It certainly wasn't my intention to do so with my posts. I love the language and I find it fascinating to watch the way it changes and evolves. Mine was merely an academic observation about the way certain words are being used in a way that clearly conveys the message that the speaker intends to convey, but which is technically wrong.
My .02: The message is more important than the delivery, but the delivery has a huge effect on the message. I don't think anything negative about anybody who misuses words or who doesn't have perfect grammar - I'm as guilty as they are. The only time it gets to me is when the message is so poorly written that it is unintelligible. Then, I'm more like to ignore the post than judge the poster.
